C A R O L I N A No 56, Friday, January 1, 1993.
FROM THE EVENTS OF THE LAST WEEK (Dec. 25 to Dec. 31)
V. Meciar and V. Klaus Meet
On Sunday, December 27, Vladimir Meciar and Vaclav Klaus met
again in Hotel Borik in Bratislava. After the meeting, the Slovak
Premier told the journalists that in his republic, voucher
privatization will not continue. On the other hand, V. Klaus
confirmed that in CR, one more round will take place. Both
Premiers emphasized that neither side has yet decided on the
nomination of an Ambassador to the other country. According to V.
Klaus, the post of an Ambassador will be no less important than a
post of a Minister in the Czech government.
Applications for Citizenship
To this date, the Ministry for Internal Affairs of the Czech
Republic has received more than 35,000 applications by Slovak
citizens for Czech citizenship. This number is increasing at the
rate of three thousand a day. A citizen of SR just has to state
the given name and surname, date and place of birth, residence
and marital status. Applications can be submitted until the end
of 1993.
New Customs Crossings
Between the Czech and the Slovak Republic, altogether 18
customs crossings will be in operation, eleven of them on
highways and seven on railways. The first ones have been finished
at Sudomerice, next in line are in Mosty u Jablunkova, Horni
Becva, Velke Karlovice, Strelna, Brumov and Lanzhot.
Debate on Ministerial Seats
On Tuesday, the chairmen of the Czech governmental coalition
started the first round of negotiations about filling the posts
of the Deputy Premier, the newly created posts of the Minister of
Defence and Minister of Transportation, the function of the
Director of Security and Information Services and the Inspector
General of the army.
KDU-CSL (the Christian-Democratic Union/People's Party) is
interested in the post of the Defence Minister, and is nominating
the Deputy Prime Minister of the former Federal government,
Antonin Baudys. KDS is recommending its candidate to be in charge
of the department of transportation. We will inform you about the
results of these negotiations.
The Division of the Transit Gas Pipeline Finalized
The transit gas pipeline will be divided on the territorial
basis into two national companies which will together found a
third, supernational company. This company will function as a
partner in foreign negotiations. This arrangement was agreed upon
by the Ministers of Industry of the respective Republics, V.
Dlouhy and L. Cernak. This step solves one of the most complex
property disputes between the newly formed republics.

The international music festival Prague Spring is now
distributing a detailed outline of its 48th year. For the period
from May 12 to June 1, over fifty concert and opera performances
