C A R O L I N A No 34.A, Friday, July 3, 1992.
ADDENDUM TO TODAY'S EDITION OF "CAROLINA"
On Thursday, July 2, CSFR President Vaclav Havel named a new
federal government headed by premier Josef Strasky.
On the same day the praesidium of the Czech National Council (the
Czech parliament) named Vaclav Klau premier of the Czech government, and
the ministers he put forward were also named to their posts.
The complete composition of the federal and Czech governments will
be in the next number of Carolina.
On Friday, July 3, a common session of parliament met in order to
vote for president of the Czech and Slovak Federative Republic. In
a secret vote the only candidate, Vaclav Havel, failed to win the
three-fifths majority needed to win (the candidate of the Republican
Party, Juraj Cop, withdrew his name). The deputies announced that
a second vote for the head of the state would take place again today. In
the Assembly of the People in this round there were 150 qualified
voters, of whom 149 cast votes. In total, there were 80 votes for Vaclav
Havel. In the Assembly of the Nations, for the Czech Republic there were
74 votes cast, of whom 45 were for Havel. For the Slovak Republic there
were 75 votes case, of whom only 18 were for Havel. The result of this
vote means that a second round of elections must be held, in which
Havel's name may not appear. Voting in this second round will be held in
the building of the Federal Assembly on Thursday, July 16 at 9:00 a.m.
In the event that no candidate wins in round two, Havel could again be a
candidate in the following round.
