in Prague, January 21.
Parliament agreed to the Compact of Human Rights and Basic
Freedom.
The proposal of President Havel concerning the amendment on
constitution law and the way of its procceeding were not accepted by
MPs.
According to his amendment the President could call the referendum
himself and would not have to wait for the challenge from the
Parliament. He has to get the agreement of 500.000 Czechs and 250 000
Slovaks.
The President needed the support of the 3/5 of the MPs to pass his

CULTURE SERVICE
We go on introducing of our theatres:
Semafor theatre
The Semafor theatre was started on October 30,1959 by Jiri Suchy
and Jiri Slitr. Jiri Suchy was a text and play writer; Jiri Slitr was
a composer. Both of them were actors and singers. The core of their
perfomances was songs and humor. Semafor wanted to keep the tradition
of Osvobozene theatre and address the people with important
life-questions using a less serious way. In 60s was Semafor was very
popular, especially the among young generation. The succesful plays
from this period include the song's streams "Zuzana is alone at home"
and "Recital 64", jazz opera "A Good Paid Walk" , "Jonas and
tingl-tangl", "Jonas and dr. Matrace". Suchy and Slitr starred all of
them.
After tragical death of Jiri Slitr in 1969 Jiri Suchy went alone
on "the road of fun and clown" as he said.
Ferdinand Havlik is a new composer. Jiri Suchy was still without
a partner on stage. Not only loneness on the stage but the more and
more suppressive normalization obstructed him in his creativity as
well. Almost 20 years it was forbidden to play his songs on television
and radio and it was forbidden to produce his records as well. Suchy
had to step down from his position as the director of theatre.
In spite of the problems he maneged together with Havlik to
introduce succesful perfomances (Bunch of the Flowers, Dr. Johann
Faust, Praha II, Charles sguare No 40, Jonas maybe in Tuesday).
Suchy and Jitka Molavcova met for the first time in "Jonas Perhaps
in Tuesday" perfomance. Suchy played Jonas and Jitka Molavcova played
Melicharova.
After November 1991 Semafor became a privat theatre of Jiri Suchy.
A new topical revue "Hej rup" and a lot of experimental theatre are on
at this time. The new cinema company Perplex, the publishing house
Klokoci, group of young actors Studio Semafor, discussions evenings and
Semaforum magazine are also associated with the Semafor Theatre. Here
are also the perfomances for foreign visitors such the Second Hand Show
are on. A group of Artists for Prague give perfomances there as well.
"Old-new" director of Semafor Jiri Suchy wants to give back to the
theatre the same look it had in Suchy-Slitr period.
