In reply to Nathan's comments about the book--yes, I would have loved
pictures, too. I did take some, and you can find them at my Flickr account.

Also, I had nothing to do with the very odd cover photo on the book.

[Janitor's note: This posting runs close to advertising. I've decided to
let it through, as there's a bit of back-story plus wondering about how to
sell, what the market looks like, how the commercial side works. Please,
if you are interested in any actual business, contact Jack off-list.]

Good Morning all,

Information/Background - My brother-in -Law is a man who like to do/grow
things. He fell in love with Hard Cider and has kind of jumped in full
force.

Being unable to find real Cider Apples (As defined by both traditional
English and French cider apples) he decided to plant his own trees.

He could not find them either - at least not like he wanted. But he could
get the wood for grafting some.

In for a penny - in for a pound.

He got about 20 trees of various varieties started, and then decided he like
the growing apples as much as making the cider.

A few classes and expert advices, and he has 10 acres of trees planted, 2
acres of a nursery (25+ varieties) to get the trees he needs to plant, 40
acres next year, and maybe another 40 acres the year after that.

I did say "In for a penny, In for a pound" right?

Now we have been approached from commercial cideries asking to sell our
apples/juice to them.

And while I have convinced my Brother-in-Law that this is a good thing from
a financial standpoint, he is interested in being able to sell apples to the
crafters as well. (It is what he was looking for when he started this, and
is hoping that he can help out others who find themselves in the same boat.)

The problem, as we could not find any cider apples when we started, we have
no idea about how to make them available/known to the hobby/personal cider
makers.

While we have 25+ varieties, not all of them are being planted in great
quantity, so not supplied to commercial operations, but may be available in
smaller quantities to individual/craft cider makers.

No, I am not selling apples, we are using everything we have and don't have
any right now or even next year. Maybe the year after that. Maybe

But how do you get your apples/juice?

Where do you look when trying to find traditional cider apples/juice?

Which would you want - whole apples or pressed juice? (We have commercial
operations that want one or the other)

For pressed juice, single varieties so you can customer blends? or just
whatever is available pre-blended?

Assuming 16 Lbs. of apples = 1 gallon of juice, what quantities would you be
interested in (Lbs. for apples or gal. for juice)?

Thanks for any help you can give me on where/how to market our apples when
we have them.

On a side note - did you hear me say "In for a penny - in for a pound?"

We had to go to the universities to get the wood to graft the trees to grow
our own supply of scion wood because we could not find it anywhere else.

Decided Semi-dwarf trees so got the root stock and started bud/chip
grafting.

Well my brother-in-law does nothing in half measures - so he grafted more
trees than he needed because he was afraid the grafts would not take, or the
trees would die, or the voles would eat them all (they tried), or who knows
what else farmers worry about. So he has more Cider Apple Trees than he
needs.

And now he asked me to sell the surplus!

Any ideas on how/where I can sell our surplus trees would also be greatly
appreciated.

Jack
