Folks, I've been following along here quietly for the past couple years,
cadging information and resources to put into a new book that just came
out: Cider Made Simple. I know this listserve is not designed for business
promotions, but I mention it as what I hope will be a useful resource. The
idea was to make a primer for people new to cider, giving them an overview
so they can be armed with useful information when they head down to their
local wine store/bottle shop. I don't think there are many guides like
this out there, so you may find it useful in educating your customers. I
hope so. I won't mention this again or spam you with a link--just giving
you a head's up.

Any tips on how to thin apples/flowers without spraying and without
painstaking plucking of individual apples?

Not sure if this was mentioned here earlier; I looked through past
Digests and didn't see anything about it.

I didn't find out about this competition until almost too late, and had
to rush to bottle some entries. Ordinarily I would not have bothered,
but two things about it intrigued me:
1. Indications that the organizers put some effort into finding and
training judges who understood cider, so entrants might expect fair
judging and useful comments.
2. A focus on fruit sourcing.
I don't know whether the judges really were good or not, but I sure
can't argue with some of their findings: I entered four ciders and
received one Bronze, two Silvers, and a Double Gold (one of only two
awarded). Have not yet seen the scores or comments.
They had a tasting booth with the medal winners at the Mendocino County
Fair & Apple Show, and it got a fair bit of attention. The variety of
ciders was amazing; some quite bizarre, like the hopped cider or the one
with Fennel seed. With all the gimmicky ciders present, I was
encouraged by the attention given to the varietals and the "heritage"
ciders. Interestingly, both Double Gold winners were made with
Mendocino County fruit, from orchards about 20 miles apart!
This was the first cider competition I've entered. Maybe I should just
stop now.
