Jack O Feil mentioned a russet-form Golden Delicious that he wonders might be
a Golden Russet. I don't think this is the case. I have a russet-form Golden
Delicious that was introduced into my orchard as "Hoople's Antique Gold" from
Southmeadow. In my experience, this is an improvement over standard golden
delicious for flavor (slightly less sweet with more interesting flavor),
but nowhere close to Golden Russet, which I also grow here. My Hoople's
Antique Gold has, on occasion, put out a limb sport that is non-russeted,
basically a normal Golden Delicious, but I've removed the limb so affected
when I see one. What I don't know is whether "Hoople's Antique Gold" is
the same as "Razor Russet", which is known as another Golden Delicious
limb-sport variation. I agree with Jack that G.D. has been an outstanding
parent in breeding.
