Subject: cider consumption data in Utah

Hi,

In response to Raphael "...am wondering if there are any reliable statistics
about the "growth of cider" in the last 5 or 10 years?"

In Utah, the sale of any alcoholic beverage is recorded and summary
statistics are available to the public if you are willing to go downtown
and physically inspect the records that are compiled in a folder on a
shelf, updated monthly and spanning the last 12 months only. I have done
this on a couple of occasions, and here are the results. While this only
pertains to Utah, which has its own unique market characteristics, it
is still hard data. I would also point out that the data I am providing
is aggregated over all brands that were sold in Utah. The Utah market is
dominated by large producers of 'apple essence/alca-pop' type beverages
(you know what I mean) that are categorized as cider (a sub-class of fruit
wine for recording purposes), but there are only a couple of serious cider
contenders in the mix, and these with the lowest volumes of sales. If you
want label-specific data, you can email me for it. Of note in interpreting
this data, the situation in Utah is that the Department of Alcoholic
Beverage Control has (essentially) sole discretion over which brands/labels
will be offered for sale to the public. It's a feature of our locality
that really makes being a local producer a ton of fun!

All units (bottles) sold in Utah in a 12 month interval ending Oct 2010:
242,865.

All units (bottles) sold in Utah in a 12 month interval ending Dec 2012:
412,987.

Number of different cider labels sold in Utah in a 12 month interval ending
Oct 2010: 11.

Number of different cider labels sold in Utah in a 12 month interval ending
Dec 2012: 16.

You can see cider sales almost doubled in a 2 year period (2010 to 2012), and
the number of different labels carried has also increased in that interval.

It looks like it's time for me to go downtown and get another year's worth
of data. Thanks for the reminder.

Hope this helps.
