Concerning the mix ups of varieties, can anything be done to establish a
national center where authoritative DNA identification of mystery varieties
could be done? I am a novice to the field and have a vague sense that the
USDA research station at Cornell may have done this at some point but no
longer, except for varieties trying to be imported.

What would it take to get something like this in place, where people could
mail in varieties for DNA identification which could also try to establish
lineages of varieties?

I'm looking to up my home cider production rom 20-30gal to 50-75gal this
season and I've been reading about HDPE containers. I'm not referring to
flextanks which are designed to have MORE oxygen permiability to mimic oak.
In my experience oxygenated cider leads to short shelf life and off flavors.

I've read that for a vigorous primary HDPE are really no problem, but I've
read conflicting things about keeping cider in them for longer periods
during slower fermentation and maturation. I follow a pretty standard
fermentation process: initial vigorous primary then rack to slow
fermentation. Generally my cider spends 3-5 weeks in the first, and then
12-20 weeks in the secondary stage. I'm planning on bottle conditioning
without priming so I will transfer the cider to bottle at the appropriate
SG. Then the cider spends 10 weeks to 2 years in the bottle to condition
further.

For those that have used HDPE on similar time lines, are there in adverse
affects using HDPE? Taste, oxygen permiability (I suspect the cider gets
oxygenated more by even gentle racking and bottling than sitting in HDPE),
anything else?
