Dustin Hostetler asks about the differences between the English and American
Golden Russet.

I'm hopeful that someone with more orcharding experience than I can answer
his questions more definitively. But from my perspective, as someone who
works around orchards in New England and sources Golden Russet whenever
possible for cider, I have yet to find a really hard and fast distinction,
and am not sure at this point if there even is a readily identified (New
York) Golden Russet and an (English) Golden Russet.

It may be that, at this point, this is a distinction without a difference,
or that any observed differences are more the result of seasonal weather
variability, growing region, etc. Generally people just refer to "Golden
Russet" as a single variety, and perhaps I should have done the same in
my book, to avoid such confusion and head-scratching.

I have a number of Golden Russets and they seem to have higher sugars than
most of our bittersweets and bittersharps. One problem I had was training,
they want to weep and should be allowed to weep. I tried to build strong
scaffolds and this was a disaster. Perhaps other on the digest can comment
on how best to train them.
