Not a lot of information on this subject out on the internet.
My orchard site has experienced the warmest winter in at least twenty three
years, and for the seven years I have actual climate data the scale of the
warmth is stunning. The seven year chill hour average is 1,290, the range
being 1,150 to 1,480. With forty days left to measure chill we are sitting
at 516. Given the long term February weather outlook for my area, another
200 hours seems to be about all I can reasonably expect to accumulate, for
around 700 or so total, which will put me at 47%-61% of the seven year
average.
I think know the symptoms I will be looking for, I am seeking advice on how
to mitigate expected weakening of the trees through altered orchard
management. Any thoughts on the subject are greatly appreciated.
For reference, the trees in question are mostly mixed English Bittersweets
with a few American cider heirlooms coming into third leaf, most on
interstem rootstock (G-11/mm111). I had intended to leave a few apples per
tree this season but that will obviously have to wait for another
year. Reduced
leaf output seems to indicate reduced water and fertilizer needs, but
perhaps the answers are counter-intuitive ? What about pruning?

re: cider apple prices
We sold some cider apples this year for $.45/pound. I based that on
Poverty Lane's bin price from last year.

I am thinking about jerry building a cider press. Does anyone know how
many pounds of pressure is needed to effectively release the juice of
apples in a five gallon bucket? Thanks

I am looking at an inexpensive manual labeler online, from Easy Labeler. I
wondered if any one had any experience with this or a similarly low cost
manual or automatic labeler. Thanks.
