First, thanks to Mike Beck for his notes on his new canning line. It's
particularly helpful to have all those numbers, to understand how it would
work out for a small producer and when it would start to make sense.
I'd love to see alternatives to bottles become more practical for small
producers. It's this: Cider has such a great story on how it works with
the environment--the orchard dynamics, so little waste, a product that's
so easily natural and local. Then there's the bottle! "Yeah, and after
all our careful efforts to make this wonderful local product, we put it
in a container that weighs about as much as the product itself, and the
container was manufactured halfway around the world, then shipped here
by an insanely roundabout path." I hear the "BZZZT! Thank you for trying,
but we're sorry."
A can weighs about 1/40th of a bottle, plus the aluminum is easier in
the recycling process.
The other intriguing alternative is bag-in-box. Why don't we have that
here in the US??? In the UK it's available for all the way down to the
lone-eagle producers who are working below the 70 hl duty-free limit (about
1800 US gallons) They've got their choice of 3/5/10/20 litre bags, and the
boxes are even pre-printed for cider. They can buy quantities starting at
10 pieces.
But when I've asked about BiB cider packaging in the US, I get things like
"oh, Scholle does BiB stuff, talk to them" or "here's a URL but I haven't
followed up on it." I have YET to find any cidermaker using BiB here.
WHY?!?!?
