For anyone who has not already taken note official results of the 8th
Annual Great Lakes International Cider & Perry Competition (GLINTCAP)
are now posted at www.greatlakescider.com. Results are tabulated in
more than one format, making it easy to tell at a glance who all the
gold medalists were, who took awards in particular states, provinces or
countries, etc.
Best of Show awards were presented in three classes (listed in
descending order of number of entries):
Commercial Division: Standard, Specialty and Unlimited Cider & Perry
(272 Entries)
Best in Show (Best in Class): Wandering Aengus "Bloom
Cider" (New World Cider category, formerly known as Common
Cider) from Oregon
Best in Show Highly Commended: Finnriver Farm & Cidery "Fire
Barrel" (Other Specialty Cider & Perry) from Washington
Noncommercial Division: Standard & Specialty Cider & Perry (141 Entries)
Best in Show (Best in Class): Andrew Laidaw "Batch
M14-ST" (Cyser category) from Illinois
Best in Show Highly Commended: Jay Bradish "Lucky Creek Bourbon
Barrel Apple Cider" (Other Specialty Cider & Perry) from North
Carolina
Commercial Division: Intensified Cider & Spirits (28 Entries)
Best in Show (Best in Class): Eden Ice Cider Company "Windfall
Orchard 2011" (Intensified Preferment Category, a.k.a. Ice
Cider) from Vermont
For the sake of brevity I'll resist temptation to list all
winners and encourage those with an interest to view results at
www.greatlakescider.com. However a few things are worth noting here.
North American entries came from twenty one states in the USA and from
four Canadian provinces. Overseas entries came from England, Germany,
Northern Ireland and Spain. This is a competition that relies entirely
on volunteers to serve as judges and stewards. Many make their living
in the industry. We thank all volunteers, but especially the growing
number who joined us from more distant reaches such as Washington,
California, Nova Scotia, England, Germany and Australia.
This was a year of explosive growth in the competition. Commercial
entries doubled from 2012, reaching at total of 300. With noncommercial
entries included to bring the total to 441 , this competition has
solidified its position as one of a small handful of international
competitions with relevance to both cider makers and consumers. With a
high degree of industry participation and interactive training for
judges as its hallmarks this competition is now generally regarded as
the most significant one for cider and perry in North America.
We thank Jeff Carlson for seven years of serving as the
competition's lead registrar. Jeff stepped down after last
year, just as we were coming to the realization that the competition
had grown to the point at which online registration will be essential.
Those who stepped in to fill the void left by Jeff's departure
have a new appreciation for all that he did for the competition. We
also thank 2013 registrar Eric West and webmaster Shawn Hall for their
contributions in making the switch to online registration.
Congratulations to all! Full results are at www.greatlakescider.com.

I'm interested to know how kegging cider under nitro effects how cider is
perceived if anyone has attempted this. Particularly, is the same soft
mouthfeel achieved as with a nice stout (i.e. Guiness, Left Hand Milk Stout)
and is perceived acidity reduced? Any other effects of note?
Thanks.
