Thanks Ian and Chris (Digest #1718) for your responses.

I think the failure of my top working on this occasion, compared to
previous successes, is probably due to the fact that I tried to graft
just one side branch instead of the whole bare scaffold. Hence, as I
already suspected and Ian confirmed, the auxin flux from the existing
branches was too great and simply inhibited the growth of the new
scions. I shan't try it that way again! At least my regular saddle
grafts are doing fine and so I have the new tree that I need (the side
branch grafts were only intended as insurance lest the saddle grafts
failed. In fact the reverse was the case!).

I do so little grafting that I have not tried Parafilm grafting tape
(though it is available here in the UK in largish rolls) but use
polythene strips cut from a bag and oversealed with electrical
insulating tape. These are items I always have to hand! The bindings are
removed at the end of the season.

Dear Mr. Baker,

2 of us in CT have bought this Counter Pressure bottler:
SEITZ TIRAX 12 head rotary filler.

I bought mine from Frank who specializes in reconditioning them:
http://nikema.de/index.htm
Where he has one available listed on web today. I am pleased with ours, it
works very well, even though it is an old model and not made any more. 1
case a minute. Need a brite beer tank to supply it.

I have mine setup in my apple cooler, so temp is at 35 degrees for tank and
bottler, so no variations that make you crazy. Pressurize with CO2, an use
CO2 as your 'pump' to bottle.

This also handles still wine, and is easy to adj height fro different
bottles, from 12 oz to 750 ml.

Here is link to another one.
