Neolithic artifacts of unknown origin and meaning

Nobody knows their origin, nor the people who made them, much less their use. The strange Neolithic artifacts are symmetrical in shape and made with a very sophisticated technique.

Despite having a modern design, the enigmatic prehistoric spheres are actually very old. The Neolithic artifacts are prehistoric objects of unknown origin, found mainly in Scotland, but also in some areas of England and Ireland.

Archaeologists believe that these stone artifacts, made of various materials, from sandstone to granite, date back to around 4,000 BC. The spheres are all roughly the same size and are decorated with designs carved extremely precisely into the surface of the stone.

More than 425 of these artifacts are known to exist. Three hundred spheres are very similar in size, with a diameter of up to 70 millimeters, but there are 12 that reach 115 millimeters in diameter. Five of them are preserved in the Ashmoleam Museum.

No two of them are the same: the sphere are all decorated differently from each other. Some are carved with four or six simple bosses. Many are carved with complex spiral patterns, or hatching on the surface.

The decorations vary, but the majority of designs are based on a series of six cocoons, although their number can vary from 3 to 160. The most interesting finds are those found at the Neolithic site of Skara Brae, one of the most famous prehistoric sites from the Orkney region, inhabited for around 600 years, between 3200 and 2200 BC.

It's evident that the creators of these artifacts possessed highly sophisticated manufacturing technology.

However, despite the large number of objects found over the years, archaeologists know very little about the origin and use of the mysterious spheres. The artifacts do not show any signs of wear, nor have they been found in contexts that may suggest their specific function.

Did they have a symbolic meaning? Did they symbolize prestige or power?

Some scholars believe that the artifacts can be linked to a very ancient time on Earth, an ancient civilization completely unknown to contemporary historiography. According to the most daring hypotheses, the spheres are very reminiscent of the schematic structure of the atom, almost as if they wanted to symbolize the atomic configuration of the various elements of the periodic table of elements.

None of the researchers admit it, but the reference is also in this case to Atlantis, the legendary antediluvian civilization that was destroyed by a cataclysm of global dimensions.
