New Inklings column: ASK THE ELECTRONIC PUBLISHER
-------------------------------------------------
Ken Jenks is the editor-in-chief and owner of Mind's Eye Fiction,
a paying
market for short stories on the Internet. He is pleased to
correspond with
readers, writers, agents and publishers about on-line publishing.

Ken shared some recent electronic publishing news: Despite his
inability to
surf the Web himself, Spider Robinson bravely submitted a story,
"'--and
Subsequent Construction,'" to Mind's Eye Fiction -- a story that
jinxed
three magazines out of existence! Mind's Eye Fiction also
recently
published a Dracula story by Fred Saberhagen, "From the Tree of
Time."

"It's good to have big-name authors jumping into the Web," says
Ken. "I'm
achieving one of my main goals with Mind's Eye Fiction -- to
improve the
quality of fiction available on the Internet."

Mind's Eye Fiction can be found at http://tale.com/. You can send
your
questions to Ken Jenks at <fictions@aol.com> with "inklings
question" in
the subject header.

ASK THE CHILDREN'S BOOK AUTHOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
--------
by Lee Wardlaw
<Katknip2@aol.com>

Preparing picture book manuscripts?
-----------------------------------
Q: How should a picture book manuscript be typed up for
submitting if a
dummy is not used?

A. A picture book manuscript should be typed like any other
manuscript:
Double-spaced, with margins of one-and-one-quarter inches on all
sides.
This means that a typical 500-word picture book will run about
two-to-three
typed pages. Never use a separate page for each line of your
story. This is
the sign of an amateur.

Giving illustrator's notes?
---------------------------
Q: I'm working on a picture book manuscript. The story line
relies on some
visual elements that will appear in the illustrations and not the
text. Is it
OK to describe or recommend what the illustrator needs to draw?
If so, how
can I do so professionally?

A: Are the visual elements absolutely essential to the story?
And, would
they be completely unclear to your editor, illustrator and
readers without
direction from you? If you can answer yes to both questions,
then by all
means add a *short* illustrator's note in brackets [ ] either
directly below
the scene in question or at the end of the manuscript.

==-----------------------------------------------------==

Lee Wardlaw is the author of 16 books for young readers, ranging
from
picture books to young adult novels. Titles include THE TALES OF
GRANDPA
CAT (illustrated by Ronald Searle) and SEVENTH-GRADE WEIRDO. 101
WAYS TO
BUG YOUR PARENTS (middle grade novel) and THE GHOUL BROTHERS
(first chapter
book) will be released this fall.

ASK THE BOOK DOCTOR
-----------------------------------------------------------------
--------
by Carol Henson
<UBKX12C@Prodigy.com>

Publishing a book of poems
--------------------------
Q.
I have a mass of poetry that my grandmother wrote throughout her
life.
A very talented woman. I would like to publish a book of poems
in her
memory. Could you help? I don't know where to start.

A.
There are several things you can do. If you would like to see
the book
in print and have several copies for yourself and family, check
into
publishing the book yourself, by enlisting the help of a local
printing
company. Or, if you're interested in finding a major publisher,
the
first thing to do is head for the library. Take out as many
copies of
Writer's Digest as they will allow and read, read, read. There
are tons
of articles about getting poetry published, with lots of helpful
hints.
Hope this at least gives you a place to start. And let me know
what
happens to your grandmother's poems. What a wonderful idea!

your questions about Book Doctors, editing, writing, etc. Her

"FIRST SALE" STORY: Bridget McCrea <BMcCrea495@aol.com>
=======================================================

"Ah, the elusive first sale. Hard to come by without writing
credits, but how
do you get credits if no one will give you a break? My advice-
listen to
your editors. After racking up enough rejection slips to paper
my kitchen
walls- someone finally noticed me. A handwritten scribble on the
corner of
one of my queries prompted me to go back and hit the keys until
my computer
spilled out exactly what the editor was looking for. The article
was short,
(600 words versus my original proposed 1200), and the market was
low-paying;
but when my SASE came back with a letter that started, "Nice
rewrite,
contract enclosed", I nearly flipped. By using that one sale as
a launching
pad I've managed to sell six more articles in my first year as a
writer- both
on spec and on assignment. I still have a lot of learning to do,
but I've at
least managed to jump the first sale hurdle!"

them in upcoming issues. Published authors: please encourage

A LAST WORD
===========

Thanks to Roger Williams of Bookwire
<http://www.bookwire.com>, who
writes "I thought you would enjoy the following. I think
your
subscribers would relate to its irony."

Every writer has received rejection slips; too many of them for
most. The
Financial Times has quoted the "mother of all rejection slips",
translated from a Chinese economic journal. It goes like this:

"We have read your manuscript with boundless delight. If we were
to publish
your paper, it would be impossible for us to publish any work of
lower
standard. And as it is unthinkable that in the next thousand
years we
shall see its equal, we are, to our regret, compelled to return
your divine
composition, and to beg you a thousand times to overlook our
short sight
and timidity."
