To Peter Cebon's concluding questions, add questions about the (re)distribution of control and profit in network organizations. In some cities, it appears that taxi drivers with cellular phones are end running centralized control systems and raking in profits that previously went to the cab company. Similarly, quality control (clean cabs, friendly service) may have a higher variance in (informal) network systems. A good theory will, of course, address those issues as well.
