VOLUME 21, NUMBER 6 Aug/Sep 2021 ISSUE #209
=======================================================================

Welcome to the latest edition of Fascination, the Unofficial
Cirque du Soleil Newsletter.

* * * IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY * * *

Cue up "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" because... it was 20
years ago today that Fascination! came to play (with the fans). Yeah,
we've been going in and out of style (now for quite a little while),
but we're still here to make you smile. (At least, I hope.) So, let
me re-introduce to you the newsletter you've known for all these
years: Fascination! The Unofficial Cirque du Soleil Newsletter YEAH!

Okay, that was cheesy, I know.

But hey, twenty years is quite an achievement, don't you think? I
couldn't think of a better or more appropriate way to celebrate this
milestone than with The Beatles, one of my favorite bands. Not only
are they a great band (I mean, c'mon), they wrote a song just perfect
for this specific moment. Besides, I'm long past caring whether I'm
cheesy or not in these introductions, or in real life really. I've
learned to lean into the role over the years... quite heavily some
would say (Doug, I'm looking at you.) It comes with age, I suppose; to
not take yourself (and the work) so seriously. And to just have fun.
To be mellow. And while they don't call me mellow yellow, I've been
known to live in a yellow submarine.

We've had a lot of fun these past twenty years, haven't we? Learned a
lot about Cirque du Soleil too. It baffles me to think about how young
I was when I started this gig, how different the world was back then,
or even how different Cirque du Soleil was as a company when we
launched in 2001. It's a different time now, with a different Cirque
du Soleil out there. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but today I'm
happy that I can share Fascination! with you and that you enjoy reading
it. Today, with all that's been going on in the world these last few
months... that's more than enough.

And that's all I really have to say about that. Short and sweet - kind
of like our issue this month. Even though Cirque has restarted most
of its shows in Las Vegas (by now, Mystere, "O", MJ ONE, and LOVE have
had their restarts), and with KA and DRAWN TO LIFE upcoming, there's
just not much going on in the world of Cirque. So, that being said,
I'm not sure whether we'll publish again in October or November. I
guess that'll depend on what happens between now and then. In the
meantime...

Full steam ahead, Mister Boatswain, full steam ahead!
Full steam ahead it is, Sergeant!

Enjoy!

Cirque Requiring Staff Vaccination Before Return to Show
{Aug.03.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

Cirque du Soleil is requiring vaccination for all staff prior to
reopening. Staff who are not vaccinated will be required to conduct
regular COVID-19 testing and provide their test results. The company
provided the following statement:

"Health and safety is top priority at Cirque du Soleil Entertainment
Group. As we continue to gradually reopen our shows, a series of
protocols have been implemented with regard to COVID-19 in order to
keep our artists, employees and audiences safe. In alignment with
these new policies, Cirque du Soleil will require for all show staff,
artists and technicians to be fully vaccinated prior to reopening.
Given the unique nature of our productions and operations, it is
imperative that we embark on this process to maintain the continuity
of our operations. Artists and employees that are not vaccinated are
required to be tested regularly."

"At this time, our artists will be performing in masks when safely
able to. We will continue to monitor the situation and make
adjustments when warranted."

The policy was initiated in June, as "Mystere" at Treasure Island and
"O" at Bellagio reopened. Cirque is due to return "Michael Jackson
One"
at Mandalay Bay on Aug. 19, and "Love" at the Mirage on Aug. 26.
"Ka" is due to open by the end of October.

Prior to COVID, Cirque employed about 1,370 employees in Las Vegas.
CEO Daniel Lamarre says the majority of those who were laid off during
the pandemic are returning to work or already have (the company has
not yet furnished an updated number of cast and crew coming back
online).

The company originally offered a $200 incentive to employees providing
a proof of full vaccination by June 25. Those who decline the
vaccination are sent home or can claim a religious exemption.

The masking requirement does not apply to such "danger" acts as
straps, trapeze, Chinese poles and planche/teeter board. But away from
the stage, all Cirque employees are masked.

How this Artist Adjusted to Two Years at Home
{Aug.04.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

Domenic Taylor had planned to take a short break and then head back on
the road. He's still in his apartment

Circus artist Domenic Taylor kept an impressive record of his time on
tour with Cirque du Soleil's Toruk: The First Flight. For four years,
from 2015 to 2019, he kept a meticulous list of the dates he was in
each city — and it covers over 30 countries and almost every continent
on earth.

With Toruk, Taylor performed everywhere from Auckland, New Zealand
(September 11th – 25th, 2017) to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (January 1st –
18th, 2018). And the pace of the tour was relentless, even in its last
months. In May 2019, the show played in Moscow and then stopped in
eight more countries on the way to its final performance in London at
the end of June. But the final item on the list deviates drastically
in length from everything that came before it. Vancouver, Canada: July
4th, 2019 – July 27th, 2021.

Taylor had been planning to take a short break after the tour wrapped
up, but 2020 turned into a full stop. He was stuck in Canada for the
better part of two years while live performance was on hold around the
world. Now he finds himself, like all of us, on the precipice of a new
transition. But life as a circus artist has given Taylor something
that prepared him for even the most unforeseen circumstances: the
ability to adapt.

At 19 years old, Taylor made the jarring transition from life in
Montreal to life on a world tour. Suddenly, he was living out of
hotels and changing cities — or even countries — almost every week,
not to mention managing his energy while he balanced seeing the world
with performing jaw-dropping feats of athleticism. But it was exactly
what he had been preparing for.

"It was manifested over years," says Taylor, "so even though it was a
completely different world, I was so focused on it before that I knew
what to expect."

The uniqueness of the opportunity was not lost on him. Any job that
demands high levels of physical performance has a measure of
precariousness, and Taylor was determined to seize the moment.

"I told myself: do everything. Visit everything, like the Great Wall
of China on your day off. Go meet people and do as much as you can
because you may never get this chance again. So I can't regret
anything because I really devoted my energy to being present."

"But obviously, you burn the candle; you're burning the wick at both
ends."

Despite having job offers that would start as soon as the day after
Toruk closed, Taylor knew he would need time to recharge before
packing his bags again. The plan was to hit the road again in spring
of 2020 — but in March, within a 48-hour span, Cirque du Soleil
announced it was closing every one of its shows.

For the first six months of the pandemic, Taylor thought of it as an
extension of his rest period — one more month, and then one more month
again. But eventually, as it became clear that live performance wasn't
coming in a month's time, he had to change his mindset.

"This is when the adjustment period came in. You either decide, ‘Ok, I
need to figure out a way for me to stay in that artistic training
space,' or decide what else is out there for me."

Even though transitioning to life on tour had been stark, it was also
the culmination of years of preparation. Taylor knew what tour
required because he had been working toward it. But with the pandemic,
it became impossible to plan. He felt caught between a desire to keep
training for a potential reopening and the need to relieve some
pressure while circumstances were out of his control.

"I started bringing that idea of mindfulness into my circus training,"
he says of eventually finding a balance. "Exercise became the thing
keeping me in a positive space."

One question that kept resurfacing during his time in Vancouver was
one of identity. "When the question of ‘who are you and what do you
do' was brought up, it was interesting to face that question without a
job title involved. ‘Without this job, who am I?' is a heavy question
that a lot of us are facing."

This was especially poignant because going on tour with Cirque du
Soleil had been Taylor's goal since he was 10 years old, and now he
had done it. "Once you achieve your dream, it's very hard to go and
say, ‘Now what? What's the next thing?'"

While his apartment in Vancouver couldn't provide the fast-paced
changes of scenery that he was used to, the questions he was asking
himself did change things and ultimately allow him to refocus on his
goals as an artist.

"The way that the world is moving, everything is going more digital.
I'm very interested to tap into that,"
he says. "I'd love to do a bit
of both [stage and screen] — transition and collaborate with artists
who want to do more film or concept work with circus as an element.
Then hopefully get back on stage when things are safe."

He's inspired by recent works like "BLUE" – An X Circus Film About
Gender, which pulls from both circus and film to explore issues of
gender identity. "I'd love to just keep creating with other artists,
whether it be in film, stunts, circus arts, visual arts, anything in
fashion. I'd love for all of those things to merge."

So, what does he think things will be like post-pandemic? Different,
he says — and in a way, that's nothing new.

"Adjustment periods are something all of us go through," he says.
"These strange moments of grief, happiness, and confusion are
universal. Going on tour was a big change and it took time to adapt;
coming off tour felt like an even bigger adjustment, and it wasn't
easy. But adapting is a choice, so I try my best to take things one
day at a time and make the most of a confusing time."

KÀ Relaunch Pushed Back
{Aug.05.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

Cirque du Soleil is edging back the timeline of its final show to
reopen on the Strip.

"Ka" at MGM Grand is now projected to relaunch in November, according
to company spokeswoman Ann Paladie. She reiterated the show does plan
to reopen by the end of the year.

Company CEO Daniel Lamarre said in July, as "Mystere" was about to
restart, the show would likely be up and running in October.

Reportedly, "Ka" is taking measured steps in reopening because of the
recent COVID surge and mask mandates. All Cirque performers in
"Mystere" and "O" are wearing face covers onstage (except for most
aerial acts or those performed in the water), according to company
directives. Audience members are required to be masked because of the
state's latest COVID protocols.

Cirque's upcoming openings are still going forward as scheduled.
"Michael Jackson One" at the Mirage is set for Aug. 19, followed by
"Love" at the Mirage on Aug. 26. "Ka" is both the company's largest,
and most expensive, Vegas production.

CDS/Disney Announce Ticket Dates for "Drawn to Life"
{Aug.17.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

New Cirque du Soleil production is scheduled to open November 18, 2021
Tickets on sale August 20!

After more than a year of waiting, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment
Group and Disney Parks, Experiences and Products are excited to
announce that Drawn to Life is scheduled to open on Nov. 18. The
highly anticipated, new family-friendly show coming to Walt Disney
World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., is a collaboration between
Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney
Imagineering and will take residency at Disney Springs. Tickets will
go on sale at 7 a.m. ET on Aug. 20 and can be purchased at
cirquedusoleil.com/drawntolife.

"We are so looking forward to unveil this beautiful, long-awaited
creation to the public,"
said Daniel Lamarre, President and CEO of
Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. "We were moments away from
opening night in March of 2020 when performances were paused.
Intermission is now over and we cannot wait for Cirque and Disney fans
to experience the joy of this love letter to the art of Walt Disney
animation."

"With its combination of Disney animation and awe-inspiring
performances, Drawn to Life is a great addition to the Disney Springs
entertainment lineup and perfect for all ages,"
said Jeff Vahle,
President of Walt Disney World Resort. "I'm excited for a new
generation of guests to experience this show as part of their Walt
Disney World vacations."

Drawn to Life, written and directed by Michel Laprise with Fabrice
Becker as Director of Creation, is a live acrobatic journey telling
the story of Julie, a determined girl who discovers an unexpected gift
left by her Disney animator father: an unfinished animation. As she
dives into the inner world of animation guided by a surprising pencil,
Julie embarks on an inspiring quest filled with her childhood Disney
memories. Developed in partnership with Michael Jung, Executive
Theatrical Development, Walt Disney Imagineering, the story is driven
by 10 unique acrobatic acts alongside animation from beloved Disney
films as well as all-new animation created by Disney artists led by
Eric Goldberg, best known for characters such as the Genie in the
animated classic, "Aladdin."

"It was an honor to have the opportunity to interpret the spectacular
works from Disney's catalogue of animation into a live show and we
couldn't be more proud of this production,"
explained Diane Quinn,
Chief Creative Officer Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. "Together
with Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering, we
have created a stunning show that will inspire audiences to dream and
reach for the impossible."

"Cirque's world-class creative and production team worked closely with
us, getting to know and understand every aspect of Disney,"
said
Natalie Woodward, Vice President of Production, Disney Live
Entertainment. "Our incredible collaboration on Drawn to Life has
created a show that celebrates Disney's legacy in the art of animation
in a unique and signature style that is pure Cirque du Soleil."

"I think guests will be amazed to see how the magic of Cirque du
Soleil and the art of Walt Disney Animation Studios have come together
to bring life to classic and current characters like Baloo, Baymax,
and Cinderella in ways that no one has ever imagined,"
said animator
Eric Goldberg.

Drawn to Life is the 50th production created by Cirque du Soleil and
its premiere coincides with the 50th anniversary celebrations at Walt
Disney World Resort. With an international cast of 64 artists, Drawn
to Life will perform Tuesday through Saturday at Disney Springs at
Walt Disney World Resort.

CDS has enough money to ensure its recovery, says CEO
{Aug.20.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

Cirque du Soleil is financially strong enough to restart its
activities, assures president and CEO Daniel Lamarre. He says the
"strong excitement" surrounding the circus' first few shows, which
returned to the stage in Vegas, is increasing its financial margin.

When the group of creditors led by Catalyst Capital Group injected
$375 million into the company last November, Cirque had the means to
finance its operations without any revenue for "probably" three years,
says Lamarre.

"Revenue has already started to come in in a big way with the relaunch
of our shows,"
the executive said in an interview with The Canadian
Press, hours before the Michael Jackson ONE show resumed in Las Vegas
on Thursday.

"For all intents and purposes, we have enough capital to sustain us
for many years."

MJ ONE Celebrates the King of Pop's Birthday
{Aug.30.2021}
----------------------------------------------------------

Hosted by Cirque du Soleil in collaboration with The Estate of Michael
Jackson, Michael Jackson ONE celebrated the "King of Pop's" birthday
with a weekend filled with events and special appearances by Jamie
King, Kenny Ortega, Rich and Tone Talauega.

The birthday weekend celebration kicked off on Saturday, Aug. 28, with

Tone Talauega.

The day's festivities featured an exclusive Q&A with acclaimed
