VOLUME 14, NUMBER 8 August 2014 ISSUE #127
=======================================================================

Welcome to the latest edition of Fascination, the Unofficial Cirque
du Soleil Newsletter.

Despite a few bits here and there, it's been a quiet month on the
Cirque news front. Perhaps the biggest headline, but not necessarily
the least expected news, was confirmation from Cirque du Soleil that
the Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour would actually be ending
its world-wide journey at the end of August, as previously rumored.
The "official" statement, which was posted on Dralion's Facebook page,
simply reads: "More than 3 million fans across 27 countries on four
continents have experienced MJ IMMORTAL. As we enter the final month
of the tour and near our last performance in Guadalajara on August 31,
don't miss your chance to experience this iconic show that has right-
fully secured its place as one of the highest grossing music tours
ever!"
So, in just a few short weeks we'll be saying goodbye to another
Cirque du Soleil show. But that is just the beginning... We'll also be
waving goodbye to Dralion on January 18, 2015, after playing its final
show in the (normally) frosty state of Alaska (from where, I've heard
said, you can see Russia... if you're visiting the right house.) Of
course in the mix is the debut of JOYÀ, Cirque's dinner show concept
at the Riviera Maya resort area in Mexico.

Otherwise, we have a couple of short, but interesting articles in
store for you this month. The first, taking a peek into how Cirque's
shows rank - in total gross - for the first half of 2014. We also
compare January - June 2014 with the same period in 2013 and 2012,
and include year end earnings for 2012 and 2013 as well, should you
be interested in the business side of Cirque du Soleil. The other
piece is an intriguing little survey I received via email one day,
asking all sorts of questions about who I am, was I aware of Cirque
du Soleil (uh, duh), and would I see Cirque du Soleil in the future
(uh, duh). What made this particular survey more interesting than some
of the others I've taken on behalf of my experiences with Cirque was
its lean toward the arena performances: did I enjoy them, how would I
describe them, would I recommend them to others, were they a good
value, so on and so forth. Although the results of the survey will,
no doubt, remain private to Cirque's financial and tour analysts, I
thought some of you might be interested in seeing the questions they
asked - for those interested in this sort of feedback gathering.
gathering.

And last, but certainly not least, at the end of July, our friends
over at The Chapiteau, an online Cirque du Soleil fan club, posted
an audio interview with Julian Moreno, a Colombian-born artist who is
currently performing the Teeterboard act in Amaluna. In it he spoke
about his early career, how he came to Cirque du Soleil, the process
of creating Amaluna, and his future plans. The interview, however,
was done entirely in Spanish (listen here: http://goo.gl/ujRQtU), and
though the folks over at the Chapiteau did publish a transcript of
their interview, it was in Spanish also. Therefore, what you'll find
inside as a bonus this month is an English translation of that
transcript (thanks to Google Translate) with some massaging of the
results thereafter. Although I'm sure it's not nearly as eloquent as
the original interview, it'll give those of us who are non-Spanish
speakers a good idea of the conversation. So, enjoy! (Additionally,
The Chapiteau has other interviews - both text and audio - on their
website, which you can find here: < http://www.thechapiteau.com/ >.)

As always we've got the latest news items posted to Fascination! Web,
the posts made to CirqueClub's pages and Cirque's Facebook links,
and, of course, updates to Cirque's tour schedule.

So, let's get started!

Court Fights Over Michael Jackson Costumes?
{Jul.01.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
Nestor "Zaldy" Goco, a ballyhooed fashion designer for scores of
musical acts, wrongfully cut business partners out of more than
$250,000 in proceeds from work done for the estate of the late
Michael Jackson, two men claim in court.

Goco, who goes by the named Zaldy professionally, is a Filipino
stylist and designer in New York City. A former model, since
leaving the runway, he has worked as a consultant to Gwen
Stefani's L.A.M.B. fashion label and designed outfits for acts
that include Lady Gaga, Brittney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and
members of the Rolling Stones.

According to a 2009 profile in W Magazine, Zaldy was contracted
to design costumes for Michael Jackson's "This is It" tour,
though the singer died on June 25, 2009 of an overdose of
propofol and benzodiazepine.

Those costumes have since been incorporated into an ongoing
worldwide tour of Jackson memorabilia and other shows authorized
by the Jackson estate, including the "Immortal World Tour" and
"Michael Jackson One," a show by Cirque du Soleil.

Plaintiffs Christopher Demers and Travis Payne claim in New York
County Supreme Court that they entered into an artist management
agreement with Goco on July 10, 2009, related to any and all
business ventures "regarding the artist known as Michael Jackson
and all entities relating to same or his estate."

Under the terms of the agreement, they say, they were to serve
as Goco's managers and assist him in getting work from the
Jackson estate.

They claim they were "entitled to receive from defendant ‘a sum
equal to twenty percent (20%) of artist's gross income derived
from artist's activities … related to Michael Jackson, his
entities, and estate."

Demers and Payne say they fulfilled their obligations to Goco,
but that the designer has stonewalled every time they sought
payment for their services. They estimate that Goco has earned
at least $1.4 million from his Michael Jackson-related work
since 2009, and that the amount could be as high as $2.4
million.

As a result, they say, they are owed at least $280,000, "and
perhaps upwards of $480,000."

The plaintiffs seek an accounting, money earned, and costs.

They are represented by David Tachtenberg, with Trachtenberg,
Rodes & Friedberg.

Cirque Bows Out of Tel-Aviv Performances
{Jul.23.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
The world-famous Cirque du Soleil has become the latest
international entertainment extravaganza to cancel shows in
Israel due to Operation Protective Edge.

"We have to announce the postponement of Cirque du Soleil's
Quidam to 2015,"
wrote promoters Marek Lieberberg and Shuki
Weiss in a statement released Wednesday.

The performances were scheduled to take place daily from August
6-21 at the Nokia Arena in Tel Aviv.

"Unfortunately it is impossible to secure the safety of the
ensemble and the audience at this time. Hence we have no choice
but to look forward to an alternative and peaceful period to
return to Israel as soon as we can,"
the promoters wrote.

Weiss already suffered a blow earlier this month when Neil Young
was also forced to cancel his Tel Aviv show scheduled for July
17 for the same reasons.

Full refunds will be made at point of purchase during the month
of August, and ticket holders will be emailed directly with
instructions, which will also be available at www.eventim.co.il.

Griffith Sentenced to 10 Years to Life
In Murder Of Vegas Dancer
{Jul.24.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
A judge sentenced a former Cirque du Soleil performer to 10
years to life in prison on Wednesday in the killing and
dismemberment of his ex-girlfriend, saying the defendant had
revived the tempestuous relationship with the dancer to feed his
own narcissism.

Judge Kathleen Delaney gave Jason Omar Griffith, 35, the maximum
sentence for his second-degree murder conviction in spite of
defense arguments that victim Deborah Flores Narvaez was
volatile and Griffith had reported her to police 14 times to
little avail.

"The responsibility for this toxic and ultimately tragic
relationship continuing as long as it did was entirely yours,"

Delaney said. "The only reason I can see was to satisfy your own
narcissistic predisposition."

Police said Griffith grabbed Flores, a dancer in the racy
"Fantasy" revue at Luxor, by the neck during a fight on Dec. 12,
2010. He testified that he thought she was reaching for a gun in
her purse and he restrained her until she died, then panicked
and asked his roommate to help dispose of the body.

The disappearance of the victim drew intense attention for
almost a month before Griffith's housemate, Louis Colombo, led
police to her dismembered remains in tubs of concrete in a
vacant downtown house.

Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo called it a "very brutal, brutal crime
and aftermath"
and said the family of the victims would serve a
life sentence of sorts without her.

Flores' tearful family members asked the judge for the maximum
sentence, saying they will never spend a holiday with her, take
her phone calls or see where her dancing career could have led.

Celeste Flores, sister of the victim, said it hurt to think that
Griffith would "wake up every day and see the light of the sun"
and enjoy other small things in life.

Griffith's lawyers promised to appeal the conviction to the
Nevada Supreme Court, saying evidence that would have painted
Flores as aggressive was not admitted at trial.

Griffith will be eligible for parole in a little more than six
years, after receiving credit for 1,294 days already served.
"That's going to give him quite a bit of hope," defense attorney
Jeff Banks said.

This is it – MJ IMMORTAL Closing August 31, 2014
{Jul.28.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
If you've been following Fascination or other Cirque fan sites
you might have heard that Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World
Tour was rumored to be closing at the end of the Summer. Our
friends over at The Chapiteau have "confirmed" this with Cirque
du Soleil today – MJ IMMORTAL will have its final performance on
August 31, 2014 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Here's what Cirque had
to say (via The Chapiteau):

"Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour will have its final
performance on August 31 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Since its
premiere in Montreal in October 2011, THE IMMORTAL World Tour
has sold out arenas across four continents and 27 countries,
performing for more than 3 million fans, underscoring the
worldwide love of Michael Jackson, his artistry, and his
humanitarian messages. It has secured its place in history as
one of the highest grossing music tours ever as it enters its
home stretch."

For the second consecutive year, Cirque du Soleil and the Estate
of Michael Jackson are inviting fans to the King of Pop's
official birthday party Friday, Aug. 29 at an exclusive all-day

Resort and Casino.

This year, the daylong birthday celebration is truly fit for a

Jackson ONE at 7:00p.m. and 9:30p.m. Guests who book their
tickets to one of the birthday performances with the special
offer code at www.cirquedusoleil.com/mjbdaywill be invited to
attend a private "meet & greet" with representatives of the
Estate, members of the show's creative team and other special
guests from the day's activities as well as receive access to an
exclusive room offer from Mandalay Bay which includes a
commemorative birthday ticket and gift bag. Guests also will be
able to enjoy other special events throughout the day including:
a book-signing with Forbes senior editor and "Michael Jackson,
Inc."
author Zack O'Malley Greenburg, a screening of the behind-
the-scenes documentary from Michael's latest album XSCAPE, and a
Q&A with record producer Rodney Jerkins and "Man In The Music"
author Joe Vogel who also contributed the liner notes to the
album package.

The album, which contains all new material, took over the top
spots on the global charts in May, hitting No. 1 in 52 countries
and Top 5in 87 others. It debuted at No. 1 on the Hits Magazine
chart and No. 2 on the Billboard chart. The first single from
the album, "Love Never Felt So Good," lit up the charts around
the world, giving Jackson his highest Billboard chart bow since
1995 and fourth-highest debut ever at No. 20. It is now the last
song played as the audience leaves the Michael Jackson ONE
Theatre.

"The New ZARKANA"
{Jul.14.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
Zarkana has been dazzling audiences for years, with its
uplifting celebration of the circus arts as they're born anew.
Today, the show has been born anew… once again, with some very
special changes we're proud to share here with our Cirque Club
Members.

Originally Zarkana had more of a theatrical, rock opera vibe,
but today, it's more modern and upbeat, with 75% of the music
being completely new.

It's all part of an ongoing evolution. After Zarkana moved to
its new permanent location in Vegas, we decided to move from its
darker tone to one that's light and edgy. The show now has a
more energetic and uplifting feel to it.

Some of the key changes: The show has become far more acrobat-
centric. With the addition of an aerial strap act featuring the
Atherton twins who perform a poetic flight over the audience's
heads, it's literally an acrobatic journey at a breathless pace.
Very immersive!

We also got an exclusive video here for our Cirque Club Members
that takes you behind the scenes during the Athertons'
rehearsals to get a feeling for how these changes will look on
stage. We hope you enjoy.

"Fly with Alan J. Silva of ZUMANITY"
{Jul.15.2014}
-----------------------------------------------------
Zumanity, The Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil is mostly about
the pleasures of the flesh, but for many viewers it also serves
as a heartfelt journey. Aerialist Alan J. Silva expresses
unrequited-then requited-love as he flirts with his paramour,
eventually finding himself suspended by nothing but narrow silk
sheets that drape straight down from the theater's high ceiling.
For Silva, the act of him soaring above the crowd represents
that anything can be attained – even impossible love. "When the
audience [first] sees me,"
he says, "They never expect that I
will fly through the air."

Silva, 30, is a sixth-generation circus performer and always
knew he was going to stay within the family business. He began
performing at 6, as many children in circus families do, as a
tumbler and eventually learned to maneuver on any number of the
highflying acts that would wow audiences: the trampoline,
straps, Russian bar, and flying trapeze with his sister, brother
and father. But it wasn't until he saw another Cirque du Soleil
aerialist in La Nouba on the silks, or Tissu, that he knew this
was the discipline he was going to pursue. Trained on the straps
and trapeze, Silva applied those techniques to Tissu. At the
time, "there wasn't anyone doing silks in [his native] Brazil,
so I was the first Tissu act."
His performance life with silks
began in 1998 and he has been flying high with Zumanity ever
since it opened in 2003, even meeting his wife Bethany, who
works in wardrobe, while in the show.

A seasoned veteran of not only Zumanity but also the demanding
circus arts, Silva has long been well-conditioned to stay aloft
during his aerial maneuvers. His chiseled physique is derived
from a lifetime of rigorous training. "I grew up preparing my
body to perform and now it's a matter of maintaining,"
he
explains. "doing 10 shows each week keeps me in shape.
Stretching and warm-up are very important."
And through the
rigorous schedule, Silva knows that even if he decides not to
fly night after night, he'll always be an entertainer. "I never
found anything that I would leave circus to do,"
he jokingly
admits, "like I never said ‘Oh I want to be a veterinarian.'"

----------------------------------------------------------
"Pollstar 2014: Where do Cirque's Tours Rank Now?"
By: Ricky Russo - Atlanta, Georgia (USA)
----------------------------------------------------------

For the past few weeks, Pollstar's intrepid investigators, number
crunches and numerologists have been intensely studying box office
figures accrued during the first six months of 2014. After the data
was processed by their new quantum-enhanced Colossus computer, a clear
picture of ticket amounts, prices and box office final results
emerged. (Do you smell the spewing smoke and hear the grinding gears?)

A total gross of $131.5 million puts One Direction ahead of The
Rolling Stones, Justin Timberlake, Bruce Springsteen and others on the
Top 100 Worldwide Tours for the first half of the year. Playing 31
shows in 17 cities, the boy band sold 1,630,502 tickets at an average
price of $80.65. But not all tours are equal when studying box office
results. Some acts play more shows while others play far fewer gigs
but charge more money for tickets. Many variables come into play when
building the statistical charts that will be studied, cited and quoted
during the decades ahead.

For instance, The Rolling Stones played 16 shows in 14 cities and sold
651,816 tickets total at an average price of $176.65 resulting in a
final gross of $115.1 million. If Mick and the boys had played a few
more shows during the first six months of the year, the band just
might have claimed the No. 1 spot on our chart. On the other hand,
Justin Timberlake played 55 shows in 44 cities and sold more tickets
than The Stones but fewer than One Direction. The former *NSYNC
member's $110.2 million total gross put him in the No. 3 position.

So where does Cirque du Soleil sit on the worldwide charts this time?
Much lower - 15th, 16th, 25th, 27th, 32nd, 33rd, 35th, and 53rd.
Here's how it breaks down...

o) QUIDAM grossed $33.1 million for 15th place. With an average
ticket price of $95.86, the production played 152 shows in 20
cities, sold a total of 345,747 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,657,249 per show.

o) DRALION grossed $31.7 million for 16th place. With an average
ticket price of $95.86, the production played 136 shows in 20
cities, sold a total of 428,267 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,593.327 per show.

o) MJ IMMORTAL grossed $22.0 million for 25th place. With an
average ticket price of $96.57, the production played 77
shows in 28 cities, sold a total of 227,814 tickets and
achieved an average gross of $785,714 per show.

o) CORTEO grossed $21.3 million for 27th place. With an average
ticket price of $87.49, the production played 159 shows in 13
cities, sold a total of 243,891 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,651,298 per show.

o) TOTEM grossed $20.2 million for 32nd place. With an average
ticket price of $92.20, the production played 109 shows in 15
cities, sold a total of 219,385 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,348,533 per show.

o) KOOZA grossed $19.5 million for 33rd place. With an average
ticket price of $98.20, the production played 124 shows in 13
cities, sold a total of 198,967 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,503,004 per show.

o) VAREKAI grossed $18.6 million for 35th place. With an average
ticket price of $67.12, the production played 147 shows in 21
cities, sold a total of 276,741 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $884,490 per show.

o) AMALUNA grossed $14.0 million for 53rd place. With an average
ticket price of $90.37, the production played 82 shows in 10
cities, sold a total of 154,959 tickets and achieved an
average gross of $1,400,439 per show.

In reviewing these numbers we find Cirque du Soleil's world-wide tour
earnings down considerably from this period (first 6 months of 2014)
over the same period last year. Cirque grossed a total of $266.3
million in the first 6 months of 2013 without MJ Immortal's nearly $80
million dollars in ticket grosses added in (we removed them as Cirque
must share this revenue with the Michael Jackson estate); however,
this year, Cirque du Soleil earned only $158.4 million without MJ
Immortal's grosses. That's a 40% drop in overall revenue! There is one
thing to note though: where is OVO? It is surprising that OVO did not
make the list; however, its tour throughout Japan may have made
reporting grosses impossible (or that data was just not provided.)

In either case, very interesting results so far in 2014!

For comparison, the Mid-Year and Full Year charts for 2012 and 2013:

"Cirque Around the Globe - A Survey"
By: Ricky Russo - Atlanta, Georgia (USA)
----------------------------------------------------------

On July 22, 2014, I received an invitation from Cirque du Soleil to
take a survey. Most of the time I ignore surveys because they rarely
apply to me - I'm not your typical consumer, especially when it
applies to Cirque du Soleil - however, the survey's introduction
piqued my interest, so I took it. Here's what it was all about...

* * *

Bonjour, Cirque du Soleil has recently launched a project that seeks
to explore what people all around the globe think of the different
venues available for their shows. We're asking for your help, and are
curious to know what your thoughts are regarding the types of venues
used by Cirque du Soleil, which are: under the Big Top, in an arena or
in a permanent installation. You will need about 10 minutes to answer
all of our questions. Your input will be valuable to help make Cirque
du Soleil better than ever. That's why we are pleased to invite you to
participate in this survey.

o) Where do you live?
- United States
- Canada
- UK
- France
- Germany
- Other country

o) Please enter the first 3 digits of your zip-code?

o) How old are you?

o) What is your gender?

o) How many people live in your household on a permanent basis
including yourself?

o) Of the people in your household, how many are children (less
than 18 years old)?

o) Approximately how many paid live entertainment events
(excluding free events) have you attended over the past year
(past 12 months)? Live entertainment events may include the
performing arts (theatre), music concerts, dance, comedy, but
NOT sporting events.

o) Are you aware of Cirque du Soleil, even if you've only heard
the name?

o) Have you ever seen a live show of Cirque du Soleil before (in
person)?

o) If Cirque du Soleil came to town, how interested would you be
in purchasing tickets to attend the show?

o) Using a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means you would never
recommend them and 10 means you would definitely recommend
them, please indicate how likely it is that you would
recommend Cirque du Soleil to friends or relatives.

o) As best as you can remember, how many different Cirque du
Soleil show did you ever see?

o) Cirque du Soleil presents its shows in different formats and
venues. Of the different Cirque du Soleil shows you saw, how
many were... Under the Big top, in Larger Arena, in Smaller
Arena, in Permanent Installation?

o) Please select all the countries in which you saw a Cirque du
Soleil show in an arena.

o) Please select all the cities in which you saw a Cirque du
Soleil arena show.

o) You mentioned having seen one or more Cirque du Soleil show
in arena. In which of the following arenas have you seen a
Cirque du Soleil show?

o) Which did you see first between those two? A Cirque du Soleil
show Under the Big top or In an Arena?

o) Regardless of whether you have seen Cirque du Soleil shows in
one or several formats, do you have a preferred format?
- No, they all have equal merit
- Yes, I prefer certain formats over others

o) Can you rank those four formats from the one you like the
most to the one you like the least?
- Touring in a smaller venue / arena
- Under the Big Top
- Touring in a larger venue/arena
- In a permanent installation (Las Vegas, Orlando, etc.)

o) Does the type of venue in which a Cirque du Soleil show is
presented matter to you?
- It matters a great deal to me
- Only to some extent
- Not really
- It does not matter at all to me

o) Is there a type of venue that would discourage you from going
to see a Cirque du Soleil show?
- Yes, Big Top
- Yes, permanent installation
- Yes, arena
- No

o) How interested would you be in purchasing tickets for a
Cirque du Soleil show if that show was held? (I would
definitely purchase tickets, I would probably buy tickets, I
probably wouldn't buy tickets, or I definitely would NOT buy
tickets):

- in a permanent installation?
- in a smaller venue/arena?
- under the Big Top?
- in a large venue/arena?

o) Using a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means you would never
recommend them and 10 means you would definitely recommend
them, please indicate how likely it is that you would
recommend a Cirque du Soleil show to friends or relatives if
that show was to be held...

- in a permanent installation?
- in a smaller venue/arena?
- under the Big Top?
- in a large venue/arena?

The next section is an idea association exercise, where you may come
across and be asked to react to ideas offered by other participants –
just like you.

o) If you had to explain to a friend what is particularly great
about seeing a Cirque du Soleil show in an arena (large or
small), what would you tell that friend? To answer, you can
either agree with ideas that appear below (by selecting
them), or write in your own ideas in the spaces provided. You
can refer to details of the show, of the venue, of the
experience…anything great that is specific to seeing a Cirque
du Soleil show in an arena. Note: ideas shown below (if any)
might contain grammatical or spelling errors since they are
displayed as written by previous survey participants.

o) IDEAS SUBMITTED BY OTHER PARTICIPANTS:
- very skillful performers colorful sets avangard style of
Music.
- the acrobatics are exciting
- Great music
- Appropriate for any ages!
- I also love the costumes, make up and themes of the
shows.
- the combination of physical artistry and unique musical
composition is unique
- entertaining acts different from other shows
- Very talented performers, great music
- I love how there is always some type of action or
movement everywhere
- The show isn't as much fun but still good.

The next section will show you some other ideas that people use to describe
arena shows of Cirque du Soleil.

o) Please indicate whether each of the following statements is
an accurate description of arena shows. (Very accurate /
Somewhat accurate / Not really accurate / Not accurate at
all)

- The latest in lighting tech, great acoustics, and
support for spectacular sets make arenas a great place
to bring Cirque du Soleil to life and ignite the senses.

- The wonder of Cirque du Soleil is touring and closer
than ever. Arena shows allow you to experience Cirque du
Soleil in your very own community.

- Arenas let you sit back and take in the spectacle with
comfortable individual seating, leg room and great views
from any angle.

- Larger-than-life venues make Cirque du Soleil arena
shows feel more spectacular than under the Big Top tent.

- Cirque du Soleil arena shows are your last chance ever
to see a specific Cirque du Soleil production presented
in your area.

- Arenas are in the heart of the action, surrounded by
great restaurants and other entertainment, making your
night full of fun.

- Cirque du Soleil arena shows have captivated hearts and
imaginations in hundreds of cities around the world.
You'll love it.

- The Cirque du Soleil On the Road Tour is bringing
classic shows loved by the world, across the country and
closer to you.

- The Cirque du Soleil Replay Tour brings fan favourites
to arenas across the country.

- Cirque du Soleil transforms familiar arenas into sensory
epicenters and transports audiences through the
metamorphoses.

- Contagious energy from massive arena crowds adds to the
rush of the experience, compared to Big Top shows.

- Cirque du Soleil arena shows offer performances in your
city for 3 days only. Miss it and miss out.

- Easy-to-find, easy-to-park, easy-to-access arenas are
the most convenient way to catch Cirque du Soleil.

o) Here are few visual executions that we might use to advertise
a show. For each of them, please indicate if it refers more
to an Arena or to a Big Top show.

o) Where have you seen your last Cirque du Soleil show?

o) Please select the city in which you saw your last Cirque du
Soleil show.

o) Where have you seen your last Cirque du Soleil show?

* * *

From the questions asked of me it's easy to see a bias and skew toward
arena and arena-type shows. Perhaps Cirque du Soleil is re-evaluating
its future for its shows in this type of venue? Or perhaps it's
looking for justification in order to launch more? We'll have to wait
and see. Of my answers I will only say this: I prefer the Grand
Chapiteau for my touring shows thank you very much!

"INTERVIEW /// Julian Moreno - Teeterboard Artist"
By: The Chapteau, a Cirque du Soleil Fan Club
----------------------------------------------------------

Julian Moreno, a Colombian-born artist who is currently performing the
Teeterboard act in Amaluna, recently gave the folks over at The
Chapiteau a great audio interview, in which he talks about his early
career, how he came to Cirque du Soleil, the process of creating
Amaluna, and his future plans.

The original interview was done and recorded in Spanish (which you can
listen to and read here: http://goo.gl/ujRQtU). What follows is a
translation of The Chapiteau's Spanish transcript of the interview
(thanks in large part to Google Translate) with some massaging of the
results thereafter. We apologize if there are any errors in
translation.

# # #

Q. So, you're Colombian?

I am Colombian, from the city of San Juan de Pasto, Nariño (a
"department", located in southwestern Colombia.) I have a foundation
in Banquine, Hand-to-Hand, and Teeterboard. Teeterboard is the
discipline I perform with Amaluna.

Q. When did you get your start?

My father gave me my first taste of the circus arts at an early age,
teaching me to juggle, but I didn't start performing regularly myself
until I was 15 or 16 years old - juggling and performing some
acrobatics on the streets of Colombia. Later, after I reached Europe –
Switzerland, where I live now – I decided to educate myself, attending
a school of circus arts there. I spent three years in Geneva
perfecting an act, and then later performing that act for about a year
before I decided I wanted to attend a major vocational school. So, I
spent two years at Académie Fratellini in Paris - graduating in 2008 –
then started working in cabarets, circuses throughout Europe, and
eventually Cirque du Soleil.

Q. So you come from a circus background?

Yes, I come from a circus background.

Q. We saw in a previous interview you were homeless for a while, is
that true?

For a long time actually, yes. I was on the Colombian streets by age
12.

Q. Has that made you who you are today?

Of course! I think the street is the best teacher there is. You can
learn just about anything there. In fact, all the things I learned
about performing, I learned while on the streets. Learning those
disciplines on the streets really helped me when I went to school.

Q. Did you audition for Cirque du Soleil?

No, they searched me out, actually. I'd been performing in Europe for
15 years - doing festivals, cabarets and all, making a name for myself
- when one day I received an email from Cirque advising they were
interested in me, that I had the perfect profile for a show they were
in the process of creating, and would I be interested in coming. I saw
what they were working on, became interested in it, and so decided to
join the show. All my life I'd been in either Latin America or Europe
- I'd never been to the United States or anywhere in North America –
so it was a great opportunity too!

Q. So, Cirque du Soleil was interested in you?

Yes. They called me and told me they'd seen the work I was doing and
were interested in working with me.

Q. Did you go through General Formation?

No, no auditions. I went straight into show creation since they were
familiar with my work, knew the level of my performance, and what I
was capable of doing. So when I arrived in Montreal I went straight
into training for the show - almost 10 months of training to create
the show – but I did not spend any time auditioning or anything like
that.

Q. Since you have a background in circus, do you find there's a
difference in the creative process at Cirque?

Yes, there is a big difference. A Cirque du Soleil creation takes
almost a year to prepare. To create a world from the concept that's
been written is very complex. It takes a long time and is very precise
work. Yes, with Cirque du Soleil a creation takes much longer than a
normal circus.

Q. In the process of creation what was the hardest thing for you?

The most difficult thing for me was enduring the cold. It's really,
really cold in Canada! It was terrible. I'm not used to the cold - I'm
hot blooded - but then, well, you work very hard so you do warm up. We
worked from 9:00am onward; 11 hours with just an hour or two for a
break. Other than the cold, the pace at the beginning was also a
little difficult to adapt to. Many hours, physical training, and all
that.

Q. Do you think it was easier or harder for the other artists to
adapt, or was it equally challenging?

The creation process is the same for everyone. Even if you're in an
easier act you still have a presence on stage, you're still involved
in all the choreography, so you must practice that as well.

Q. What is your favorite part of your act?

I think my favorite part is, after all the effort for so many years,
is making people smile. The more you push, the more they smile. That's
what we crave, actually.

Q. Are there some cities you've visited already that the public was
more responsive?

Yeah, sure. There are some cities where the public is a little more
inviting, others a little less. In Canada, the spectators are very
happy. It's an audience that knows a lot about Cirque du Soleil, so
they're a little more enthusiastic.

Q. What has been your favorite city?

I have a few favorites, actually. I loved Toronto. I loved Quebec
City. I really liked San Francisco - Seattle too - and even the last
city I was in, Boston. It's great! I liked New York City too, but
there's a different feeling there. New York is big - too big - and I
felt like a stranger.

Q. What is your act, exactly?

We are a group of six guys who wash ashore on this island governed and
populated almost exclusively by women. We discover very quickly how
war-like they are, and since they are warriors we're treated badly
initially, placed in captivity by them. Our act is a bit like trying
to free ourselves from their bondage, showing them we can fight too.
It's a very strong act with each guy having his own personality. We
have a great time flaunting our strength and flirting with the girls!

Q. Do you have the freedom to make small changes to the act?

We can replace someone if needed, we can also modify our performance
one day if we're not feeling well; do a double instead of a triple
somersault or something like that. And if we do make a decision like
that we have to tell our coach immediately, but, we cannot change or
restructure the act as it is performed.

Q. Tell us about your daily routine?

In the morning I train for quite a while, stretching mostly and some
physio-cardio conditioning. After lunch we'll head to the big top and
train there from about 2:00 to 4:00pm. Then while others get their
time on stage I'll stretch some more. If time permits before a
performance I might take a walk, or something similar. Otherwise I
wait around for the show to start. After the show I'll stretch for
another half-hour to 45-minutes to avoid injury. I spend most of my
day training, actually.

Q. On your free days do you try to do everything you can or take it
easy?

I'm very quiet. On my off days I like to leave a little early to get
to know the city, go eat at a restaurant, and spend some time with my
daughter.

Q. Is there another show that catches your eye?

There are many good shows I'd love to take part in, but there's only
one Cirque du Soleil, you know? I have had very nice experiences in
other shows... who knows? I do not want to grow old in the Cirque du
Soleil!

Q. That would be my next question, plan to stay a while?

Actually, no; I will not be in Houston. I just have Miami left on tour
before I move on to another company. When I told Cirque I wasn't going
to re-sign with Amaluna they offered to move me to another show, but
it didn't interest me. Thankfully, I got a good deal with another
company, so I'll be with Amaluna in Miami, take a well deserved month
off, then move on.

Q. Where will you be going?

I'm going back to Canada, to Montreal. I'll be working with Cirque
Eloise.

Q. For how long?

My contract with Cirque Eloise is for two and a half years. The first
year is for the creation period, and then a year and a half
performing. It takes their shows longer to mature, they say, so the
initial contract is longer than Cirque's, then they renew year by
year. We'll see how it goes after the initial contract is over.

Q. If you were not an artist what else would you do?

Music! My mother was a singer in Colombia; my brother too. Together we
have a circus band where I sing and play percussion. So, yeah, I like
music!

Q. There are many fans of the circus who are training in a circus or
acrobatic discipline. What words or advice you can give to those
people?

For all those who have not yet attained their dreams I would say: it's
not impossible. There is no secret in life, though. If you want
something, and you like what you do, you have to fight hard for it. I
myself am an example. I was on the streets for many years; no one
helped me to get out. I did it because I wanted to. At one point I
said to myself "Okay, I have to do something," and I did. Have nothing
but perseverance, always train every day, and take good care of your
body. Respect your body: warm up properly, stretch properly, sleep
properly, and eat well too. It is easier said than done, but, you have
to say: I must persevere.
