TAOS HUM STIRRING UP A RUCKUS:
MYSTERIOUS NOISE SPURS INQUIRY TO HOUSE PANEL
by Kit Miniclier
Denver Post Staff Writer
Once dismissed as pure humbug by skeptics, the 'Taos Hum' now has
the attention of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee.
In addition, a congressman who suspects that the military is
responsible for the persistent noise has asked Defense Secretary Les
Aspin to turn down the volume.
The mysterious, low-frequency hum has plagued people in Taos, NM
for two years. Others, including U.S. Rep. Bill Richardson, D-N.M.,
have visited Taos often and never heard the noise nor felt the
vibrations that come with it.
'But the congressman is convinced people are feeling and hearing
something, and (he) feels the hum is a serious issue which must be
addressed,' said Richardson's spokesman, Stu Nagurka.
MESSAGE FROM SPACE?
Jocular skeptics initially had speculated that the hum might be
a message from space aliens; communications by the spirits of ancient
inhabitants of Taos Pueblo; the generator of the Taos Country Club;
or secret underground testing at Los Alamos National Laboratory, 60
miles away.
'We were accused from the beginning of trying to perpetuate a
hoax,' said Bob Saltzman, who, with his wife, Catanya, has led an 18-
month campaign to identify the hum and its source.
After they appealed to Richardson for help, the congressman held
a town meeting in Taos last weekend and said he would ask the
intelligence committee to investigate.
Richardson, chief deputy majority whip and a member of the House
Intelligence Committee and the House Science, Space and Technology
Committee, appealed to Aspin a few days ago.
'I have reason to believe the Department of Defense may be
responsible for a mystery sound plaguing the residents of Taos, NM,
and other areas of New Mexico...Should a Department of Defense project
be the cause of this noise, please consider this letter as a formal
request to make the necessary changes so the noise no longer troubles
the citizens...'
He suspects a Kirtland Air Force Base radar project, low-flying
airborne laser laboratory, or low-flying helicopters.
A federal research scientist has identified the Taos hum as a
strong signal at frequencies of 12 to 18 hertz, which is below most
human hearing.
It is 'a low, throbbing, grinding sound, accompanied by pulses
and high static ringing,' Richardson told Aspin. 'For some, the sound
has become so deafening that they have moved out of the area.'
COUPLE FORCED OUT
Saltzman, a 47-year old photographer, said he and his wife, 44,
a dancer and choreographer, left Taos three weeks ago and rented a
condo in Hilton Head, SC, 'to get away from the sound so we can
think.'
'I demand that the Department of Defense stop this abomination
immediately,' Saltzman said. 'And I want to put them on notice that
I intend to sue them for damages. It will be a class-action suit
involving everyone else who is hurt by this exposure to sound,
including unborn fetuses whom the EPA says may be at risk from long-
term exposure to infra-sound.'
U.S. Rep. Steve Schiff, R-NM, a member of the House Government
Operations Committee, is conducting his own investigation with
officials at Kirtland, Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and
Los Alamos National Laboratory.

As I recall, it is a military crime to discuss a UFO sighting outside of your
commanding officer and relevant personnel until you are fully debriefed and are
allowed to speak about it, if ever. However, I am not entirely certain about
this. I do not believe that this policy extends beyond military personnel,
however commercial pilots have found strong opposition by their employers for
reporting UFOs. Some have lost their jobs.

I would be curious to know what makes this triangle-shaped aircraft so special?
These craft have been making numerous appearances all over the world lately.
Perhaps if you could be more specific as to location in North Carolina, we
might be able to research it for you.
Take care.

The following is extracted from the "Computer Underground Digest"
Volume 5 Issue 13. The article is titled "Hackers take on the UFOs?".
You might find it interesting.

From: Ann_Dromeda@orion.nebula.com
Subject: File 4--"Hackers" take on the UFOs?
((MODERATORS' COMMENT: We've read a bit of discussion about UFOs,
"hackers," and guerilla investigators. Whether myth or reality, the
discussions represent a segment of computer culture that others might
find interesting. So, we run the following as a reflection of one
segment of the culture that, even if myth, raises that age-old
question: Is it live, or is it memorex?)).
Rumors have begun to surface about a group of hackers who were
involved in a project to uncover information regarding the existence
of UFOs. The most public example pertaining to this alleged project
was seen on Dateline NBC on the screen of the mystery hacker
"Quentin."
The story goes that this group of individuals decided to put their
skills to work on a project that, if successful, would legitimize the
hacking process by uncovering information on what has been called the
greatest cover-up in the history of the world. Milnet TAC ID cards
were obtained through military officials sympathetic to the cause.
Several sites and networks were targeted that had in the past been
linked to UFO activity. These were sites like the Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Sandia Labs, TRW Space Research, American Institute of
Physics, and various other educational, government and military sites.
The rumors also emphasize that several sites had what these
individuals called "particularly heavy security." Within several
seconds after connection had been established, system administrators
of sites used in this project were contacted. Further rumors state
that there was information regarding a propulsion system designed
utilizing what is termed "corona discharge" being analyzed at one
site. The most sinister of all rumors states that one particular
participant who was allegedly deeply immersed in TRWs internal network
has not been heard from since uncovering data regarding a saucer being
housed at one of their Southern California installations.
Believe what you will about the reality of this project. Much will be
dismissed as hacker lore, but within the core of every rumor lies a
grain of truth.
Are we being lied to? Why is this information still classified by the
NSA? What are they hiding from us behind a maze of security? Will we
continue to stand idly by and let an uncaring and deliberately evasive
government shield us from what may be the most important, and
potential dangerous news to ever surface? Information wants to be
free, and only a concerted group effort can make this happen. How
much do you really want to know about what is really going on?
What follows is information that has been released regarding this
project...

On March 12th, your perception of reality will be substantially
changed.
You will be transported back to November 5, 1975, when a group of
loggers are preparing to go home after a day of work in a
Northeastern Arizona forest. What should have been any ordinary
day becomes an historical event that would lead to charges of
murder, accusations of a hoax, and the ultimate in devastation of
personal lives over a story so incredible no one would believe
any part of it.
On March 12th, Paramount Pictures and Joe Wizan/Todd Black
Productions will present "Fire in the Sky," a true story based
on the Travis Walton experience, whose abduction by a UFO is one
of the best-documented cases in history.
The scene is set. As the men travel through the forest over
rough roads, miles from civilization, they come upon a strange
and unusually bright light hovering in the sky. Travis Walton,
being a fearless and perilously curious person, jumps from the
truck to approach the object as his friends warn him to return to
safety. Suddenly, there is a bright flash of light and Travis is
knocked to the ground by a mysterious force of energy. In a
panic, his friends leave the scene only to return moments later
to find Walton gone without a trace.
For five days, his friends are accused of murder while an intense
manhunt ensues attempting to find a trace of Walton. On the
fifth day, Walton is returned dazed and disoriented only to find
that things in the small town of Snowflake, Arizona have changed
forever, and he is the cause of it.
Telling an incredible story of alien interaction, Walton faces
contempt and ridicule that almost destroys his life.
Seventeen years later, controversy still surrounds the event, but
each of the men involved in that fateful day still stand firm on
their stories.
"Fire in the Sky" is not a UFO movie. "This is a story that
speaks to human character and behavior --- about our inclination
to presume the worst in someone before considering ideas that
challenge our own skepticism," comments producer Joe Wizan.
Screenwriter Tracy Torme' identifies the film as a study of "how
a single event can alter your life forever just by (your) being
unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. 'Fire
in the Sky' is also about friendship and betrayal --- and
forgiveness."
"Fire in the Sky" stars D.B. Sweeney ("The Cutting Edge"), Robert
Patrick ("Terminator II: Judgment Day"), Craig Sheffer ("A River
Runs Through It"), Peter Berg ("Late for Dinner"), and Academy
Award nominee James Garner. Directed by Robert Lieberman.
Wolfgang Glattes is the executive producer and Tracy Torme' &
Robert Strauss and Nilo Rodis-Jamero are the co-producers of the
presentation.
A must see for everyone!
ParaNet will carry a review of the presentation.

Hello Capt Winters,
I just grepped through all the MUFON North Carolina sightings reports and did
not find any reports for that specific time period. Most of the reports were
either in the 50's or late 88-89 period with quite a few more fairly recent
ones. Most of the reports described the shapes as either cigar, a few disk and
some 'sugar cube', with 2 reports, one of a large round orange object, the
other a large round red object. The only 2 that I saw that were triangular
were the following, but from 1989 time period:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Report:--------------- NC081889.UFO
Date of Sighting:----- August 18, 1989
Location of Sighting:- McGuire, North Carolina
Classification:-------
Details:
At 3 pm, Paul L. Moore, a retired security guard at the McGuire Nuclear Plant
saw a strange triangular shaped object for about two seconds. The UFO, about
the "size of a Stealth bomber", made a 45 degree descent and moved towards
McGuire.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sorry that I couldn't identify any more for you nor find any in that
time frame (1975) but it's entirely conceivable that the reports haven't
all been categorized. Good luck on your searches.
