The new issue of Phil Klass' SKEPTICS UFO NEWSLETTER (SUN) is out, and
nestled among the usual tripe and innuendo is some decent background
information on Budd Hopkins latest "big case."
Some excerpts:
<<
Hopkins (seemingly) never questioned why two police officers would not
promptly report that some sort of craft had plunged into the East River so
that rescue operations could be quickly launched....If "Richard" and "Dan
[the two police officers who contacted Hopkins] had carefully noted and
still remembered the window Linda floated out of, why had tthey not gone to
her aprtment directly without contacting Hopkins?
>>
<<
Hopkins reportedly believes "The Third Man" is: JAVIER PEREZ DE CUELLAR, who
in late 1989 was Secretary General of the United Nations....The UN Secretary
General is accompanied by two regularly assigned security guards wherever
he travels. But neither of them matches up with Linda's descriptions of
"Richard" and "Dan."
>>
<<
HOPKINS DID NOT TELL HIS MUFON AUDIENCE SOME OF THE MORE BIZARRE ASPECTS OF
LINDA'S CLAIMS OF ALLEGED ABDUCTION BY THE "SECURITY AGENTS".
..Linda told two MUFON investigators that she was kidnapped a second time
off the streets of Manhattan by "Dan," who drove her out to a "CIA Safe
House" located on the North Shore of Long Island. According to Linda, "Dan"
asked her to put on a white nightgown...When she did, "Dan" reportedly
dropped to his knees and in a religious fervor, called her his "Lady of the
Sands."
>>
<<
Recently, New Jersey MUFON member Vince Creevy chanced to buy a
_science-fiction_ book titled "Nighteyes," authored by Garfield
Reeves-Stevens, whose plot centers on a woman named Sarah and her daugher
Wendy, who are abducted from their Manhattan apartment and beamed up to a
UFO hovering overhead. This prompts them to contact a leading UFO-abduction
expert who lives in New York City - where Hopkins lives. Later Wendy is
abducted by two Government (FBI) agents and taken to a CIA "Safe House" on
Long Island, as Linda claims.

Just for your info, to follow-up on my previous posting:
I spent some time listening to the tape of that broadcast again, and was
able to extract some more info which wasn't clear to me when I made my
initial posting about this.
Cooper's organization is called the Citizens' Agency for Joint Intelligence
(CAJI). To send to it, the address is:
CAJI
c/o Becker Satellite Network
Kiowa, KS 67070
Also use the above address if ordering Cooper's book, Behold A Pale Horse,
enclosing a check for $24 made out to 'William Cooper'.
The program can be heard direct from satellite by those with the proper
equipment on Spacenet 2, Channel 7, 7.5 Audio. It is aired on Monday,
Tuesday, and Wednesday nights at 9 PM CST. (Note that he specified
'Standard' time, even though we are still on Daylight time. I don't
know if that was a mistake or deliberate. So perhaps the actual time
the program comes over the satellite feed will be an hour different
from wallclock time until we go back to Standard time.)

One pillar of scientific inquiry is peer review. In the face of an onslaught
of poor data, pseudo-data and out-and-out wishful thinking in numeric form,
it seems to have become much more common that the worst of this stuff spills
out into the popular press, esp. if its producers become caught up in
the notion that Their Discovery is of Earthshaking Importance, and cannot
wait for general verification. This sort of spill tends to be accompanied
by acrimonious statements about hidebound colleagues and journal editors,
not to mention immediate requests for exceptional funding.
Well, peer review certainly has its warts. Worse, it has limited capacity.
Even worse, in these times of really tough funding and an administrative
view that "businesspeople can do it better", there's plenty of incentive
to sidestep the system altogether.
If it weren't for the fact that businesses find it easiest feeding at
the public trough, I'd say, bring on the phlogiston generators and
perpetual motion machines: "business" can enjoy the less abstract
side of natural selection for a change, too. But the reality is, the more
pseudo-science impresses the marketing department, the more we all
suffer.
Yes, I'm sure none of this is news to sci.skeptics. My point is,
the notion of what good science is, needs promotion, in simple terms,
loud and clear, wherever we have the public ear. Every day, I deal
with people who have pretty vague notions about causality, to say
nothing of repeatability. To paraphrase an old saw, you can lead
them to conclusions, but you can't make them think ...and yet,
that's exactly what I try for. I think it's important to encourage
one another, not just to tsk tsk at the "TOP SECRET PHOTO OF UFO"
tabloid headline, but to realize that at least one person in the
check-out line is seeing that and thinking, "wow! for real!".
Either you find the point at which you can speak out for rationality,
or no one does.
I hope that this is not out of line for sci.skeptics --- which of late
seems to be carrying more ad hominems and quadruple-quoted postings
than usual. But the notions of reasonability, provability and skepticism
are NOT what I see in the high school and university graduates among which
I live; and I suspect that such notions are pretty thinly understood
by a lot of the people that you the reader know. CSICOP and skeptics
in general are getting a public reputation as people who like to
get together and snicker, with little actual skepticism evident, and
little new information presented and defended. Such reputation I
have heard from a local newspaper reporter, who feels that it is
proper that she give equal space to itinerant graphologists, psychics
and such, but that skeptics occasionally feed her a printable sarcastic
one-liner response.
Well, I've said my bit. Think about the consequences of general unreason,
and about what is not beyond your doing; then try to rationalize why
you aren't doing it :-).

The Society for the Advancement of Civilization Presents:
Extraterrestrial Contact The Meaning and The Message
Saturday, October 10, 1992 10:00am to 9:30pm
Physical Sciences Lecture Hall, UC Berkeley
At Gayley Road across from the Greek Theater
A public forum on the legitimate scientific inquiry into one of the most
controversial issues facing our planet today. Why does extraterrestrial con-
tact have value for the people of Earth? There are increasing numbers of
aware, articulate people from a variety of professional and cultural back-
grounds who have been contacted by extraterrestrials. Come, hear and meet an
impressive group of research experts and persons who have had close
encounters.
R. Leo Sprinkle, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Wyom-
ing, Laramie, where he was director of counseling services, and founder of the
Institute for UFO Contactee Studies, is an early investigator of hundreds of
Close Encounter cases beginning in 1955. He served with APRO as a consultant
for psychology and is the principle investigator of the John Salter case. He
is the organizer of the Annual Rocky Mountain UFO Conference.
James A. Harder, Ph. D., Professor Emeritus of Engineering, U.C. Berkeley,
pioneered the use of hypnosis in close-encounter cases since 1962, and the
study of E.T./human interactions and their influences on this planet. He will
describe emerging information about the characteristics of advanced civiliza-
tions and how this information could help inspire us to a more hopeful view of
Earth.
John Salter, Ph. D., Professor of Indian Studies Univ. of North Dakota, will
lead several people with close encounter experiences in a round table discus-
sion. Dr. Salter will also tell of his own continuing encounters. He was
featured in the May 1991, CBS prime time special 'Visitors from the Unknown'
He teaches a very popular university course which accepts the reality of
extraterrestrial contact.
Richard F. Haines, Ph.D., Psychologist and research scientist. His interest in
discovering the core nature of UFO phenomenon spans 20 years with special
interest in sightings by pilots, photo analysis, and CE4. He recently founded
and co-directs the Joint American- Soviet Aerial Anomaly Federation.
Richard J. Boylan, Ph.D., A psychologist in private practice. He has assisted
in the understanding and the integration of ET experiences into everyday life.
He will speak about the 'mind field' of new information developing for those
with extraterrestrial close encounters and for the Society of Planet Earth.
Cathy W., A California person with some very interesting close encounters, and
whose events were thoroughly recorded by a well- known
researcher/investigator. Her experiences were shown in a documentary on a
prime-time NBC program.
A special two hour question and answer period in the evening will be hosted by
the participants in the above program.
A special multi-media presentation of ET close encounter experiences will also
be presented.
Doors open at 9:15 am. Events begin at 10:00 am and end at 9:30 pm. Cost is
$30.00. Free educational video with reservations received by October 6th,
1992.
Seating is limited, so please reserve your seats in advance. Priority is given
to those who have paid advance reservations & who have arrived by 9:45am.
Tickets will be sold at the door. Please no video/tape recording. Videos and
tapes will be made available to attendees at the forum.

There was some conversation about Linda's trip to the safe house on CI$; I believe the gist of it was that Hopkins told either the audience or a few individuals that Linda had been taking to a house by "Dan," but no details were mentioned that I can recall.

Thanks for the info. If it isn't too inconvenient, I would like to
know what books it was reported in. I would tend to agree that it
was probably a hoax, or the government would have been willing to
pay what he asked. However, if he never gave in, he lost out on
a lot of money, which seems odd. Amazing, isn't it, how much
people want to cash in on mysteries? I would hope that I was more
altruistic than that, especially for the find of the eon.
I don't read this board every day, which accounts for my delay in
responding, but be assured I would like any help you can give.

Subject: What's New for 09-04-92
WHAT'S NEW, Friday, 4 September 1992 Washington, DC
1. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE BOARD COMMISSION ON THE FUTURE OF THE NSF
(WN 28 Aug 92) will hold public meetings on Sept 17, Oct 16 and
Nov 7. Written public comments are invited on how NSF can advance
the health of academic physics and do more to link academia and
industry. Comments should reach the Commission by 15 Oct 92.
The Executive Secretary of the Commission is Charles Brownstein,
Director, NSF Office of Planning and Assessment, Room 546,
National Science Foundation, Washington, DC 20550. (202) 357-1201
The 15 member Commission will be announced Tuesday, September 9.
2. UNITED STATES AGREES TO BUY WEAPONS-GRADE URANIUM FROM RUSSIA.
The highly-enriched uranium will be blended with either depleted
or natural uranium in the U.S. to produce fuel for power plants.
At least 10 metric tons is to be imported each year for the first
five years, and 30 tons per year thereafter. Even so, it will
take a long time to put a serious dent in the Russian inventory
of bomb-grade uranium, which is estimated to be over 1,000 tons.
Moreover, the agreement does not deal with plutonium, which would
be more expensive to process into fuel, nor does it prevent the
Russians from continuing to make enriched uranium and plutonium.
Burning fissile material in power plants is the safest means of
disposal. There is concern about transporting large amounts of
fissile material around the world, but the risk of diversion if
it were processed into fuel in Russia might be even greater.
3. PHYSICISTS IN THE NEWS! From MIT to MIU, physicists are making
news. At Maharishi International University, the chair of the
Physics Department, John Hagelin, is running for President on the
Natural Law ticket, and expects to be on the ballot in 40 states
by November. The Harvard trained physicist wants to create a
meditation corps of 7,000 military volunteers; that is the square
root of 1% of the world population--the number needed to generate
super radiance for global scale effects. In Washington, a press
conference featuring nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, author
of Crash at Corona, revealed newly unearthed information about
the government cover-up of a 1947 crash of a flying saucer in New
Mexico. One alien, a humanoid with suction cups on the ends of
its fingers, survived. At MIT, there was a conference on alien
abductions organized by David Pritchard, an APS Fellow. Although
the conference was confidential, a report should be out by the
end of the year. According to Pritchard, 1% of the population has
abduction experiences--the square of the number needed for super
radiance. The physical evidence is not conclusive, but abductees
do exhibit spots on MRI scans corresponding to the location of
brain implants inserted through their nostrils by the aliens.
4. TAIWAN IS EXPECTED TO BE THE NEXT FOREIGN PARTNER IN THE SSC.
According to generally reliable sources, Taiwan is prepared to
contribute $40M. Combined with $50M committed by India, that ups
foreign participation to 1% (or is it the square root of 1%?).

I'm trying to catalog the use of UFO/alien themes in
advertisements, especially in nationally distributed ads
in the print or electronic media. Here's what I have so far.
If you have any information on others, please email me or reply
to the net. Thanks a lot.
I'll periodically send out what I have so we can see how this
current infatuation with UFO/alien themes develops through the 1990s.
