Found this Article in my vast UFO collection (Yea Right :-). I
thought it my be interesting to read since there some threads
out there about terrestrial space missions like Phobos, Viking
Lander etc etc.

---------------------------------Inserted Article----------------------
The following article, translated from its original Portuguese, is
reprinted with permission from the Sept/Oct, 1985 issue of Brazil's
UFOLOGIA, possibly the largest-circulated UFO magazine in the world with
30,000 circulation. Translator Catherine Solange is now working on
another UFOLOGIA story, also by Luis Gonzaga, which attempts to explain
a theory of extraterrestrial classification based on spiritual
hierarchies.

SOVIETS RELEASE INFORMATION ABOUT E.T.-ASTRONAUT CONTACT ON SALYUT
MISSION. By: Luis Gonzaga Sortecci de Paula

UFO crew members appeared in space and interacted extensively
with the three Solviet cosmonauts who linked up with Salyut 6 in early
1981. Surprisingly, the U.S.S.R. has elected to release some ot the
information on the history-making encounter.

During their Salyut 6 msiiion that began in March and ended in
late May, 1981, Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Kivalyonok and Viktor
Savinikh maintained extraordinary contact with three human
interplanetary aliens. For an extended period of time, the cosmonauts
watched as these aliens operated an extremely advanced, circular
spaceship ringed with portholes.

Public awareness of this event was held back until 1984, when
the September 24 issue of `Manchete' was published. Displayed on that
issue's cover was the face of international model Jushiu Manegal, In a
relatively minor position on the inside left-hand corner of the cover we
read the sensational words: "Russians Encounter UFO's".

For approximately four days, with periodic interruptions, the
Salyut 6 and the round UFO orbited 400 kilometers above Earth. The crews
interfaced to approximately 30 meters of distance between their two
craft.

Shaped like a ball, the alien ship measured an estimated 9 to 10
meters in diameter. The circumference of the UFO was ringed with eight
symmetrical portholes, or windows. Sixteen additional transparent areas,
eight above and eight below the UFO's center area, were lit up in a way
that sugeested some automatedform of lighting.

By this interior light, the cosmonauts were able to observe a
relatively conventional-looking cabin space within the craft, exhibiting
control panels, chairs, retaining walls and other equipment and
structures. The surface sheen of the craft looked metallic. No obivous
points of entry and exit were seen, and the Soviets also noted a
remarkable absence of assumed necesities on the ship's
exterior-identifying marks, antennae, optical systems terminals, solar
panels and the like.

The encounter was initiated on May 14, when through his
porthole, cosmonaut Kovalyonok spotted the round object in front of the
Salyut 6 from about 1,000 meters distance. He had made out the ship's
portholes with long-distance binoculars.

The following day, the cosmonauts were surprised to see that the
UFO had moved in much closer, within 100 meters of the Salyut. Since
their unterstanding of propulsion systems was limited to the disposable
resources of Earth's rocket technology, the cosmonauts were perplexed
that the UFO could produce such a vast alteration of its orbit: If
rockets were used for propulsion, escape hatches for attendant fuel
emissions were noticably lacking on the aliens' stark craft!

Positioned by the portholes were three beings of human aspect
clearly making various gestures. They were of a solemn and serene
countenance, reminiscent of devout Hindus, with straight noses and thick
eyebrows visible above their enormous, slanted blue eyes. They looked
out at the cosmonauts with a deep and penetrating gaze, yet displayed no
emotional qualities in terms of our understanding of emotions.

At one point, the cosmonauts asked their Soviet base of command
for permission to make contact with these unknown voyagers. The
immediate response that got back was a decisive and definite, "no," that
the only manner of contact they could utilize must be instrumental.

Little by little, the alien ship was getting closer to the
Salyut, and at an unimaginable velocity. Ti would appear and disappear
at various angles. For frations of a second, it would disappear behind
the Earth and then reappear in a new relative position, stopping
abruptly with no apparent effect on the crew members. In one of its
reappearances, the alien ship stopped within 30 meters of the Salyut.

On impulse, cosmonaut Kovalyonok opened a celestial map and took
it to the window. To his amazement, he noticed that two of the aliens
did exactly the same thing, opening a map so that Kovalyonok could
clearly perceive out solar system in the upper right-hand corner, along
with many other celestial bodies not identified during the brief time
the map was glimped.

Without knowing exactly how to proceed , the Soviet cosmonauts
waved and offered a "thumbs up" gesture of fraternity-and they returned
it. Tentative communication was achieved by instruments, but did't
evolve to the level desired.

Using a high-potency light source, the Soviet cosmonauts used
Morse Code to welcome the visitors in Russian. There was no reaction
from the aliens. The Soviets tried English: "Are you reading us?" again,
no reaction. On the third try, still in Morse Code, the cosmonauts
tranmitted a binary number: 101101, which expressed a certain geometric
figure. The aliens responded with another sequence of numbers, not the
same as theirs. Later the cosmonauts verified that the aliens had
transmitted the value of the letter "E," based on a logarithmic
configuration applied frequently by the computers on Salyut 6, when
programmed to graphically linearize the relative curves of a complex
mathematical function.

Dressed in the same spacesuits they were wearing on board, which
looked like diving suits with visors, the aliens left their ship and
floated in space. They made strange movements, as if they were sitting
in chairs. They wore no knapsacks of any other kind of apparatus that
normally would be used to maintain life as it's known on Earth.

At the end of the fourth day, the aliens went away and didn't
reappear. It left the cosmonauts with a strange feeling of homesickness,
in the words of one ot the Russian crew.

Members of Russia's military and scientific communities met with
the cosmonauts on June 18, 1981, to view photographs and film footage
taken on the mission. Cosmonaut Kovalyonok was bombarded with questions
and responded to them all. Later he was silenced under the restrictive
label, "top secret," until, for reasons still not clearly explicated, he
was offically allowed to go public by determination of the Kremlin.

Footnote: Author Gonzaga lives in Brazil's capital, Brasilia, where he's
spearheading a community project to facilitate contact and
communication between Earthlings and extraterrestrials.

Soviets: UFO beamed light, green cloud

UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL

MOSCOW- The crew and passangers of a Soviet airliner flying at
night over Minsk spotted an unidentified flying object that sent beams of
light to the ground below, the newspaper `Trud' said Wednesday.

The UFO lef a green cloud in its wake that flew alongside the airliner at
an altitude of 30,000 feet until it landed in Latvia, said the newspaper.

"The pilots saw what appeared to be a large, blinking star suddenly shed a
thin ray of light which fell plumb down on the ground,"
`Trud' said. It was
followed by two light beams which formed a cone.

All four crew members in the cockpit reported that they "could see
distinctly everything down in the sector of the ground illuminated be the
cone-shaped shaft of light, the houses and the roads."

The light suddenly shot back into the UFO, which they said was hovering at
25 to 30 miles in the air. "It then flared up, leaving a greeen cloud in
its stead,"
the report said, without giving a date.

"The green cloud then dropped straight down below the altitude at which the
airliner was cruising, then climbed up again in a similiar fashion,
positioning itself right opposite the plane at a height of 10,000 meters
[30,000 feet] and accompanying it in this way till the end of the flight
like an honorary escort,"
the pilot reported.

Nikolai Zheltukhin, a member of the Academy of Sciences, said there was
only one conclusion: "The airliner's crew encountered what we call an
unidentified flying object."

In a letcure on Feb. 27, 92, in colorado, LInda Moulton Howe, award-winning TV
producer and author of "strange Harvest", book about cattle mutilations
seemingly connected with UFOs, gave updated infor on ENglish crop circles. On
July 16, 91 a 410-foot diameter pictograph appeared in Marlborough, England,
between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., the so-called "geometry lesson." It was from this
one that astronomer Gerald Hawkins derived the theorems, which he says relate
to the Fibonacci Series. (named for 12th century Itlian mathematician Leonardo
Fibonacci, the series is the unending sequence where each term is the sum of
its two predecessors: i.e., 1,1,2,3,5,8,21,34...It shows propostions
determining the structure of a variety of natural forms: pinecones, nautilus
shells, distance of planets from Sun in our solar system, etc.).

Two days after "the geometry lesson" appeared, German observers in the field
got a night video of luminous disk-like object moving over the pictograph a few
feet off ground -- its size variable, decreasing to tennis-ball sice then
disappearing. Howed showed a copy of the video.

One month after "the geometry lesson," a crop circle appeared in a separate
location in England identical to a Mandelbrot Set (plate #188 in "Fractal
Geometry of Nature,"
by Benoit Mandelbrot, W.H.Freeman Co, 1982).

Interesting that we sent into space the little metal plaques engraved with man,
woman, solar system; and what comes back is 12th century proportional theorems
and 20th century science of choas, Fibonacci and Mandelbrot! Whoever is doing
the crop circles is clearly well up on their (our) math.

I hate to admit this, but....ahem....I was looking at it upside-down.
In an effort to save at least a slight amount of face...my print is so
detailless that the only remotely-recognizable things (to me) are vertabrae.
Could be a neck, could be a tail....you pick. ;-)
Nahh...no jaw etc.
Anyway, my first guess is that the object was something that was swallowed.
Since apparently no other views or other info is forthcoming, I don't see any
way we could go any further.

Subject: The Melbourne suburb UFO video
Date: 1 Mar 92 18:37:00 GMT

As there has been some interest mentioned in this event,
I'll post what I know as at this stage:
The paranet message indicated Saturday 22nd February and ABC
TV as source. This seems to be in error unless we are
dealing with 2 videos! This seems unlikely.
I was contacted by Channel 9 TV from Melbourne on Sunday
morning, February 23rd. They were describe a video taken at
Endeavour Hills, an outer suburb of Melbourne, Victoria,
during Friday afternoon, February 21st.
I recommended John Auchettl of Phenomena Research Australia
to Channel 9 as he was an experienced investigator. He was
the principal VUFORS investigator along with Paul Norman in
the Mundrabilla case. John authored the Mundrabilla report
that VUFORS published. John has left the VUFORS committee
and has since formed his own investigation & research group,
namely PRA.
It appears that the section of video aired on TV was not the
whole video and in fact, as far as John is concerned not the
most interesting part. There is a section where the main
object appears in the same field of view as an antenna. It
rotates past it, seeming to move downwards slowly then
appears to take on a horizontal flight path. It is not at
all clear at this preliminary stage if this is an optical
illusion. Further detailed analyses are underway.
The event appears to be as follows.
At Endeavour Hills at about 4 pm, on February 21st, a man
was in his backyard filming his grand child on video. His
attention was drawn to what appeared to be a high level
object - very bright - a light or obright object, ostensibly
doughnut shape - that was almost stationary in the sky, but
was apparently moving slowly to the west. He had it in view
for a a minute or 2 before he started filming it. The main
object is caught on video for about a minute. There is at
least one other, possibly a third as well artifact caught on
film, but neither of these are as interesting as the main
artifact. The second film artifact appears to present as a
fast moving "re-entery" event. John, at this preliminary
stage of his investigation feels that space debri might be
the answer for the larger object, but shape, duration and
its possible unusual behaviour (which may be due only to
perspective - this will have to await fuller analysis,
underway this week, for reconciliation) might preclude this.
What we have at this stage is apparently a good video of
something - what is it? We do not know, but it would be
premature to describe it as strong evidence of an alien UFO.
Please wait for further results of investigation, which at
this stage are purely preliminary. John is keeping me fully
briefed on his investigation.
Regards, Bill Chalker.

Date: 5 Mar 92 06:06:29 GMT

From: sgamble@mrc-crc.ac.uk (Steve Gamble x3293)

In Newsletter 532, Mike Corbin relayed a message by Ian Taylor
from Alt.Alien.Visitors concerning a strange aircraft Ian saw
over the M1 motorway just north of London (England) on 22nd
of January. This was a slow moving object with a light at
each end. The lights alternated betwwen being red and white.
Ian estimates the size as 30 to 40 feet.

There have also been a couple of reports two or three weeks
ago of large saucer shaped UFOs over London. One report was
from a man in Chingford, East London. He saw the object towards
central London heading north. At about the same time it was
reported by a lady in Brentford, West London as being seen
over Wembley heading north.

I think I might have an explanation. A few days ago I saw an
Airship Industries airship in this area. It has been making
evening flights with various advertising logos on it. At a
guess I would say that it is about 50 feet long and has two
navigation lights one at each end. When I saw it both lights
were red, but at this point it also had its white advert
illuminated.

When I saw it is was advertising mita, a photocopier company.
I saw the airship go south past my office window at about 3pm.
When I left the office at around 6:45 I saw in the distance
a large saucer shaped UFO. Having seen the airship earlier in
the day this is what I believed it to be, but it was obvious
that it could have been mistaken for something more exotic. The
effect was quite remarkable. On close examination it appeared
to have a hollow centre. As it was a couple of miles further
south, I boarded a southbound Metropolitan line train. As I
came closer the hollow centre resolved itself into a row of
windows. In fact I finally met up with the airship about five
miles south of my original position. The whole white surface
of the balloon was illuminated with the word mita being painted
on in red. At this point it was travelling north, so must have
been even further away when I originally sighted it.

The darker word mita was obviously what had originally appeared
to be the hollow centre to the 'craft'. The logo was painted in
lowercase letters similar to Courior typeface but with all letters
of the same height. The row of windows which appeared from about
three miles away was formed by the vertical bars of the letters.

Fortunately, it was also seen again this same evening by the man
from Chingford who having seen it under better conditions was now
convinced that this explained what he had previously reported.

When flying over London the airship is launched from, I believe,
a field near Leavsden which is not far from the M1. Then it more
or less picks up the Metropolitan railway near Watford and follows
this south over Harrow and Wembley into town.

I will be writing this up in a little more detail for the UFO
TIMES.

Steve.
