Hey, Jim, Ol'Salt,

Our satellite and other detection gear is tuned to pick up man-made
objects, namely ballistic missiles and aircraft. The systems could be
tuned to detect almost anything, but the thinking was that anything
moving faster than a ballistic missile must be something from outer
space--and we have no interest in them, do we!?

We have detected UFOs on radar in the atmosphere on a number of
occasions. In fact, we've clocked objects moving at speeds far in
excess of anything our aircraft are capable of. However, as I
understand it, the radar that makes up our early warning system is
"tuned" only to detect objects that are man-made. Not being a radar
expert myself, I am not sure how this is done. But a friend of mine who
has worked on radar says that it is fairly easy to do today with
computers controlling the radars.

So, again, we have a problem. Sort of the old absence of evidence is
not evidence of absence routine. We are detecting nothing mainly
because we set it up that way. The we is very generic, please.

To Michael Schwartz et al..

I often hear of people going to the FAA with these low-flying
aircraft incidents; nobody ever seems to try the National Transportation
Safety Board, which is specifically concerned with unsafe practices.
I'm not saying you'll get any better treatment out of them, but at
least NTSB is a different organization from FAA, and is actually often
found to be in an adversary relationship with them. Couldn't hurt.

On another level, I have to wonder what anybody hopes to gain by going
to an agency of the government which is doing so many of these things
to us, to report what they are doing. Now I'm not saying that every
bureaucrat who picks up the phone has been thoroughly briefed about
UFO, crash/retrieval programs, etc., and knows consciously that these
things are being covered up. But I would expect that each of these
people has been told what to do about these incidents, and what they
are told to do is not going to give the individual citizen any real
satisfaction.

Gary:

I hear what you are saying, but tell me how we can try to examine and
explain things without referencing out current knowledge and state of
technology first?

Also, I think that the use of metaphors helps to explain things to
others without the education to otherwise understand. For example, try
to explain quantum theory to people who do not have the math and physics
background. You'll find yourself resorting to metaphors like the brain
is like a computer type of metaphor.

How can we explain or investigate things based on knowledge or a state
of technology that doesn't yet exist?

Nonetheless, you have some interesting ideas.

Gene
