Responding to a question about whether or not something is going on
in the Provincetown, MA area, I am sending along a copy of an
article appearing in the Cape Cod Times, March 10, 1990. I believe
there has also been a follow-up article, but I haven't yet found
a copy of the paper. The Skywatch group continues to meet, the last
meeting drawing a crowd of 125, many with their own stories of lights
and other strange sights.

Unfathomable: P'town fishing captain reports seeing UFOs
by JOYCE STARR, staff writer

PROVINCETOWN -- Provincetown Capt. Gerry Costa says he didn't believe
in UFOs until Sunday night.

But he said that for half an hour, midnight to 12:30 a.m., he observed
10 of them between Race Point and Wood End Light, a distance of about
four miles. In a telephone interview Wednesday, he said his fishing
vessel, Michelle, was only about 300 feet from one.

"It took about a half hour for us to get from the Race (Race Point)
to Wood End, and I was seeing these bright, flashing white lights all
the way,"
he said. "They were flying around the beach and on top of
the beach."

Costa described what he saw as "a round ship with a row of square windows
all around it -- like a ball with windows,"
silver in color and about
30 feet wide. The object had no wings, he said.

Unexplained lights inthe sky are nothing new in the Provincetow area.
Joe Nyman, an investigator with the Mutual UFO Network, said most have
been attributed to winter landing patterns of planes approaching Logan
Airport.

But since November, a group called Cape Skywatch has been meeting regularly
to investigate such reports. The group was founded by Carolyn Miller of
Provincetown, who owns a psychic and astrology shop.

The first meeting of Cape Skywatch in November was attended by only eight
people, she said, but 60 people, representing a cross-section of the
Cape-tip community, attended last month's meeting, she said.

"I founded the group because I had seen the lights and other people had
seen them too,"
Ms. Miller said this week. She said she has photos of
such lights taken through a telescope.

Ms. Miller, who said she saw her first UFO at Ballston Beach, Truro, in
1968, said she has no doubt such things exist. Group members have seen
lights at Salt Pond, Eastham, and at ponds in Orleans, she said.

Marjorie Ullman, a Truro psychiatric social worker and member of Cape
Skywatch, said people see unusual things but are afraid to discuss them
for fear of ridicule. Many fishermen are among them, she said.

An investigator from the Mutual Unidentified Flying Object Network
(MUFON), a nationwide organization, will tell how he thinks UFO lights
can be distinguished from aircraft lights at the next Skywatch meeting,
at 7 p.m., Friday at the Community Center, Bradford Street, Provincetown.

Ms. Miller encourages prople who have seen lights or unidentified
objects to attend or call her at 487-0976. All names are kept confidential,
she said. She said she also tells prople to report what they see to the
Coast Guard.

Provincetown police reported no unusual calls Sunday night or early Monday
morning. But Sgt. Robert Anthony said there have been reports of
sightings from Herring Cove Beach of three lights in the direction of
Plymouth that people claim they are seeing "pretty much every night."

Ms. Miller said as many as 13 cars a night show up in the parking lot of
Herring Cove and honk their horns when they see a light. Interest was
stirred, she said, after an article appeared in a Provincetown newspaper.

Cape Skywatch is investigating Costa's story and trying to get tape
recordings from all four men on their versions of Sunday's sightings, she
said.

Costa says that three other crew members were with him at the time, and all
three saw the object. But he could not give the last names of two of the
men who joined him on the two-day fishing trip. And the third man, who was
piloting the boat, could not be reached for comment.

Costa said he had been out scalloping and was heading back into
Provincetown from George's Bank when the lights began to appear. The
62-year-old skipper, who has spent 50 years working at sea, said he wondered
why he couldn't see the familiar flashing beam of Wood End Lighthouse.

"I thought the light was out, and I was going to call the Coast Guard to
tell them,"
he said. "But then, as I went by real slow, I saw that an
object was blocking it."

According to Costa, five of these objects were on the beach, one was on
the water and four were "flying around," off Corn Hill, Truro, and off
the Wellfleet coast. When they left all at once, after being in view
for about a half hour, Costa said they made a sound like a small cannon
but "not too loud."

"I never saw anything like this before, and I didn't believe in UFOs,"
said Costa, who also owns the Ranger V whale-watch boat in Provincetown.
But he said the experience has made a believer out of him.

The Cape Cod National Seashore took the reports seriously enough to take
Costa and three Cape Skywatch members to Wood End Lighthouse in a four-
wheel drive. The public is not allowed to drive to that area at this
time of year.

North District Ranger Irving Tubbs said he saw no evidence around the
lighthouse to indicate any kind of landing.

"Based on the reports, Irv looked on the ground for evidence of
disturbances and didn't see anything."
Chief Ranger Anthony Bonanno
said. "But that doesn't mean they (Costa and his crew) didn't see
anything."

Ms. Miller said she was skeptical about Costa's story until she met him
during the ride out to Wood End Tuesday. "He convinced me," she said.

Rick Hersey, senior chief petty officer at the Coast Guard's
Provincetown station, said reports of mysterious lights are nothing new
in the Provincetown area. But he said it was unusual to hear about
something so close.

"I raised my eyebrows; it is a curiosity," he said. "The only thing I
know of that hovers is a helicopter."

Hersey said he was aware of the recent talk about Sunday's sighting, but
said the Coast Guard did not investigate because he had received no
official report. Hersey said he had an off-duty conversation with one of
the Michelle's crew members, who told him about lights and about seeing
something land. He said he had also been given a message that someone
else had called to report seeing lights but not to make an official
report.

Hersey said he went as far as calling the Army National Guard, Air Force
National Guard and Coast Guard Air Station to confirm they had had no
helicopters or other air activity near Provincetown that night.

Subject: Re: Carp Crash
Date: 29 Mar 90 05:35:35 GMT

I'd like to comment on some of the details in the recent Carp Crash posting:

: The ship had landed in deep swamp near Corkery Road. Two AH-64 Apaches and
: a UH-60 Blackhawk headed for the area the following night. The helicopters
: carried full weapon loads. They were part of a covert American unit that
: specialized in the recovery of alien craft.

: Flying low over Ontario pine trees the Apache attack choppers soon spotted a
: glowing, blue, 20 metre in diameter sphere. As targeting lasers locked-on,
: both gunships unleashed their full weapon loads of 8 missiles each. All 16
: were exploded in proximity bursts 10 metres downwind from the ship.

Sure you don't mean upwind? Why 10 metres?

: The missiles were carrying VEXXON, a deadly neuroactive gas which kills on
: contact. Exposed to air the gas breaks down quickly into inert components.
: Immediately after having completed their mission the gunships turned around,
: and headed back across the border.

V-EXXON? This is supposed to be super VX or something? Come now.

: Now the Blackhawk landed, as men exploded from its open doors. In seconds
the: six man strike team had entered the UFO through a 7 metre hatchless, oval
: portal. No resistance was encountered. At the controls, 3 dead crewman were
: found.

I detect the hot breath of the frustrated novelist here.

: With the ship captured, the US Air Force, Pentagon, and Office of Naval
: Intelligence were notified. Through the night a special team of technicians
: had shut-down and disassembled the sphere.

Huh? Just like that? Oh, that's right, Lear quotes somebody (Lazar?) as
saying that "Our people are better at taking things apart than putting them
back together..."

: Early the next morning Nov. 6,
: 1989 construction equipment and trucks were brought into the swamp. The UFO
: parts were transported to a secret facility in Kanata, Ontario.

: As a cover story the locals were informed that a road was being built
:through the swamp. No smokescreen was needed for the military activity as
:Canadian
: forces regularly train in the Carp region. Officially nothing unusual was
: reported in the area. Although someone anonymously turned in a 35mm roll of
: film. It was received by the National Research Council of Canada, in Ottawa.
: The film contained several clear shots of an entity holding a light. (see
: photo) At this time the photographer is still unidentified.

: The humanoids were packed in ice and sent to an isolation chamber at the Univ
: of Ottawa. CIA physiologists performed the autopsies.

: The reptilian, fetus-headed beings, were listed as CLASS 1 NTE's. (Non
: Terrestrial Entities) Like others recovered in previous operations, they
: were muscular, grey-white skinned, humanoids.

: The ship was partially reassembled at the underground facility in Kanata.
: Unlike previous recoveries this one is pure military. Built as a "Starfighter"
: it is heavily armed and armored.

I thought they were pretty much impervious to whatever we have. Or perhaps we
really have stuff, as somebody suggested, that is five generations of what
they let the public see, and which includes entire new technologies concealed
from us. My friend Waves Forest has records of hundreds of suppressed and
forgotten inventions and processes. (Shameless plug: Go out and buy the new
book from Ivan Stang, "Three-Fisted Tales of 'Bob'". It is a collection of
stories written by various SubGeniuses, including a story written by Waves.)

: In design no rivets, bolts, or welds were used in fastening, yet when
: reconstructed there are no seams. The UFO itself is made up of a
: matrixed dielectric magnesium alloy.

I've never heard of this material.

: It is driven by pulse electromagnetic fields generated by a cold fusion
: reactor.

Sounds more and more like a collection of PBS-level pop science buzzwords.

: All offensive capabilities utilize independently targeting electronic beam
: weapons.

Of what sort?

: In the cargo hold there were ordnance racks containing fifty
: Soviet nuclear warheads. Their purpose was revealed by advanced
: tactical/combat computers located in the flight deck.

All this sabre rattling doesn't impress me that much. The Greys don't seem to
act this straightforwardly, for one thing; for another, no such fortifications
have been observed by others who have described their examination of crashed
disks.

I'm also amused by the assertion that the investigators could waltz in
and get briefed by the "advanced tactical-combat computers", when it's
all I can do to make UNIX send and receive electronic mail, in English
(of a sort), even with the help of UNIX wizards. It's doubtful that we
would even recognize an ultrahigh technology computer when we saw it,
let alone be able to communicate with it, unless it was an AI capable of
figuring out how to talk with us on its own.

On the other hand, perhaps this was a human, terrestrial, military craft
crewed by humans or hybrids of some sort. Perhaps there really are a number
of factions or groups with differing amounts of control over alien technology.
: Threatened by recent East-West relations, and the revolutionary movements
: within itself, Red China is preparing for the final ideological war. The
: aliens have agreed to defend China from the free world's combined military
: and nuclear forces.

: At this time China is arming the Middle East with their own nuclear arsenals,
: in order that they can successfully take on Israel. Unifying the Arabs under
: one Chinese command was simple, especially with Israel's recent "iron fist"
: attitude toward occupied territories.

: The Soviet warheads found in the UFO were destined for Syria.

That's down the road a piece from Carp, Ontario. Take a right at St.Petersburg.
: CIA operatives
: in the Middle East have noticed huge movements of Chinese "technicians" and
: "advisors". China is also supplying the Arabs with bacteriological agents,
: Migs, Hind gunships, tanks, and missile launchers.

Unless I'm misinformed, the Soviets no longer exchange or sell
technology to the Chinese. How did they score the Hind gunships? On the
open market? If so, presumably the Arabs can buy them too, and they
have the petrobux to do so. I don't think the Arabs need the Chinese
for arms; there are plenty of Brazilian, Belgian, Swedish, Italian, and
German arms merchants eager to sell top quality weapons to them.

: The use of "Soviet" instead of "Chinese" nukes is part of a disinformation
: campaign to break up East-West relations after the annihilation of Israel.
: The Warheads were hijacked from Soviet subs in the Dragon's Triangle. A
: section of alien controlled Pacific once frequented by Russian subs. After
: losing some 900 high yield warheads and 13 vessels, commanders were ordered
: to steer clear of the area.

This has the unmistakable odor of BS to me...I can't think of a single
good reason for the Chinese to want to step on Israel, unless it is
simply to create chaos and WWIII, as the writer suggests. I gather the
aliens told the Chinese that they could somehow protect them from
fallout, the destruction of petrochemical plants, the interruption and
possible destruction of international trade, and so on. I don't believe
the Chinese or anybody else are foolish enough to destroy the entire
international infrastructure in a misguided attempt to "survive".

: The most important alien-tech. find were the 2 milimetre, spheroid, brain
: implants. Surgical inserted through the nasal orifice the individual can be
: fully monitored and controlled. The CIA and Canadian Govt have actively
: supported mind-slave experiments for years. Currently the Univ. of Ottawa is
: involved in ELF wave mind control programs. A continuation of the CIA
: psychological warfare project known as MKULTRA, started at the Allen Memorial
: Institute in Montreal.

This may or not be possible. I'm more interested in observing that this is
just a recapitulation of the same horror story we have heard before, with
minor extensions. Feh.

: Using ELF signals transmitted at the same wavelength the human brain uses,
: the researchers could subliminally control the test subject.

How? I know people who have experimented with such things, and if it's
possible, it's not straightforward.

: The alien implants utilize the same principles except that the whole
: unit is subminiaturized and contained in the brain. Fortunately the
: implants can be detected by magnetic resolution scanning technology. All
: individuals implanted by the aliens are classified as ZOMBIES.

I think the writer is confusing Computerized Axial Tomography scanning, or CAT
scanning, with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (formerly, before the luddites got
to them, Nuclear Magnetic Imaging [aaak! noo-kew-lur radeeeation!]).

: The ZOMBIES have been programmed to help overthrow Mankind in the near
: future When China finishes with Israel it will invade Europe. At the
: same time Chinese spacebased bacteriological weapons will be launched at
: the Arctic. The winds will carry the diseases into Russia and North
: America. In days 100's of millions will be dead, survivors will have to
: deal with Chinese, aliens, and the ZOMBIES.

We'll see. In the meantime, one might note that this scenario sounds
suspiciously like some of the elliptical Xtian fundamentalist scenarios, with
the Chinese hordes marching into Israel to fight Armageddon.

: The aliens want all out war so that human resistance would be minimal, when
: they invade. They tried this same tactic once before with Nazi Germany. Most
: of the scientific advances we have today came from German science which was
: based on alien technology. Had Hitler won the war, the earth would have
: become a concentration camp.In order to depopulate the continents for the
: aliens.

I just don't buy it. They could have leveled civilization any time they
wanted with their own technology instead of sneaking around with stolen nukes
and covert implants. If they are really here to extract raw materials
(remember, L. Ron Hubbard, in _Battlefield Earth_, has Earth invaded and the
human race (nearly) exterminated with poison gas by aliens who intercept an
interplanetary probe and discover that we have plentiful supplies of tungsten)
they would probably like to keep things as peaceful and quiet as possible for
as long as possible. If they just want us out, poison gas or bacteriological
weapons would serve. If they don't want the artifacts of our culture either,
then splashing some big asteroids into our seas would take the wind out of
mankind's sails in short order. I don't see what's to be gained from dabbling
in Weltpolitik.

: Data aboard the sphere explained why the aliens are so comfortable on
: our world. They preceded man on the evolutionary scale by millions of
: years; created with the dinosaurs. Some 675 million years ago an
: interdimensional war destroyed most of their civilization, and forced
: them to leave the earth. Now they have chosen to reclaim what was once
: theirs.

This sounds like L. Ron Hubbard again; his Scientology materials are full of
such astounding assertions mixed blandly into the completely mundane. What
have they been doing all this time? With their technology they could
presumably rebuild worlds into whatever they wanted, or create artificial
habitats in space.

But that reminds me. Does anybody else remember the "artist's rendering" of
what "an intelligent, evolved, dinosaur" would look like? I saw several
drawings in Omni or Discovery or some such rag. Of course, they looked like
Greys, and were in fact grey, but did not have the hypercephaly (big heads) of
the Greys.

: The alien forces with their Chinese and Arab allies will attack within
: the next 5 years. Waiting longer than that would make it impossible even
: for the aliens to reverse the ecological damage inflicted on the Earth
: by Man.

Considering that we are almost ready to release microbes which will actually
eat 2,4,D or Agent Orange or Dioxin and break it down, I don't think we're on
the verge of any such irreversible disaster - particularly if you grant the
Greys advanced technology.

This whole posting talks about near-term technology, stuff that's less than 10
or 20 years away from our own progress. As such it's instantly suspect - if
the Greys have been around for 675 million years they shouldn't need to rip
off Soviet subs.

Perhaps the writer is off by a factor of 10. Now, if he had said
something like:

"The Greys had just perfected faster than light travel and the Nordics became
aware of this about 65 million years ago. The Nordics destroyed the Grey
culture by dropping an asteroid into the mid-Atlantic trench and wiped out the
dinosaurs. There was enough warning to let a small number of Greys escape..."

You take it from there...

# Hi Gene. Long time, no type! I'll be mailing copies of the Harris paper
# out, soon, by the way.

Indeed it has been a while--and I might disappear again! ;-) Work is
eating up more and more of my time. Feast or famine--right now it is a
feast.

Harris paper?? Please explain. I've been a bit out of touch lately.

On the chip impkantation, that the technology exists isn't much news to
the people in the industry, but I think it is news to those on the
outside who don't keep up on science and technology, which is probably
about 85-90 percent of the public.

Then comes the idea of using the implants to control other via a master
computer. ;-) Sounds a bit like some of the things that have been said
on this echo. But what really interested me was that this opens the
door, maybe, to further efforts on developing the bio-chip that seems to
have disappeared from the headlines. One of the scenarios for the
bio-chip, a chip made of protein molecules, is that the chip could be
implanted directly in the brain and the brain tissue would eventually
grow into the chip. The chip would then use the connections in the same
way our silicon and aresenide chips today use the little gold wires that
attach them to the outside world.

Of course, there is the other scenario that was running around for a
while of a self-replicating bio-chip. That is, a bio-chip that would
grow more storage space as the need arose.

This whole thing has reached new levels since it has been fictionalized
by Dean Koontz (sp?) in his book _Midnight_. If you haven't read it, I
recommend it highly. Pushing this concept of implanting chips within
the humans in a fictionalized sense is Greg Bear in his two books _Eon_
and the sequel _Eternity_. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending upon
your view of things, these are merely science fiction. But the point
remains that marrying a chip to an organic brain seems to be the next
step in the evolution of the technology.

When we do finally and successfully marry the two, what will be the
result? Only time will tell. But it is clearly worth thinking about.

Date: 29 Mar 90 08:43:45 GMT

In the alien starfighter incident, you forget to overlook the fact that
maybe the strike force was not trying to gas the aliens (as the craft is
made to travel in a vaccuum, it would naturally be airtight), but any observers
trying to find the craft. Perhaps they were trying to AVOID the spacecraft, to
prevent damaging it. After all, as was said before, how would they know that
this nerve gas would have any effect on the aliens anyway.
Which brings me to: I have never heard of VEXXON either. All military
weapon gases have 2 letter names: CS, VE, etc. There are no trade names for
these gases that I know of (and VEXXON sounds like a trade name if I ever heard
of one). Later,

You'd almost certainly have to be south of the Cape to see much of
that. The perigee for a Titan launch is in tropical latitudes, though
north of the equator. The orbit has an inclination of 28.6 degrees.
