Subject: Database of faces available via WWW

The Olivetti Research Database of Faces is now available on:

http://www.cam-orl.co.uk/facedatabase.html

The database consists of ten different images of each of 40
distinct subjects (400 images in total). For some subjects,
the images were taken at different times, varying the
lighting, facial expressions (open / closed eyes, smiling /
not smiling) and facial details (glasses / no glasses). All
the images were taken against a dark homogeneous background
with the subjects in an upright, frontal position (with
tolerance for some side movement).

The files are in PGM format, and can conveniently be viewed on
UNIX (TM) systems using the 'xv' program. The size of each
image is 92x112 pixels, with 256 grey levels per pixel.

The database is suitable for face recognition and face feature
extraction experiments. Please visit the WWW page for more details.

Subject: Identification of Clouds

Hello!

The objective of our research is to identify different land cover
types using multi-sensor optical satellite image (such as SPOT)
and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image (such as ERS-1)
showing same geographic area. One of the problems we encounter
in integrating the information across the SAR and SPOT images is
the presence of clouds and their shadows in the SPOT images
(clouds are invisible to SAR). I have come to believe that the
integration of the information in the images could not be
meaningfully undertaken without first identifying the areas
occupied by the clouds and the associated artifacts in the SPOT
images. Since this is a common known problem, I am sure many
researchers might have worked on its solution. I would greatly
appreciate any literature references/pointers/suggestions.

SYMMETRY DETECTION THROUGH
LOCAL SKEWED SYMMETRIES

Abstract

We explore how global symmetry can be detected prior to segmentation and
under noise and occlusion. The definition of local symmetries is extended
to affine geometries by considering the tangents and curvatures of local
structures, and a quantitative measure of local symmetry known as
symmetricity is introduced, which is based on Mahalanobis distances from
the tangent-curvature states of local structures to the local skewed
symmetry state-subspace. These symmetricity values, together with the
associated local axes of symmetry, are spatially related in the local
skewed symmetry field (LSSF). In the implementation, a fast, local
symmetry detection algorithm allows initial hypotheses for the symmetry
axis to be generated through the use of a modified Hough transform. This
is then improved upon by maximising a global symmetry measure based on
accumulated local support in the LSSF --- a straight active contour model
is used for this purpose. This produces useful estimates for the axis of
symmetry and the angle of skew in the presence of contour fragmentation,
artifacts and occlusion.

Keywords: skewed symmetry, symmetry axis, local symmetries,
Hough transform, perceptual organisation.

This call for papers continues the SPIE Sensor Fusion conference series held
in Boston during recent years, and earmarks our 1995 meeting with a new and
important topic, Networked Robotics.

Sensor Fusion, the robust integration of data from multiple and distributed
data sources, provides improved machine perception and recognition in complex
automation & robotics environments. Advances in sensor fusion are important
to autonomous navigation, intelligent vehicle highway control, 3-D medical
image analysis & image guided procedures, remote sensing, surveillance &
automatic target recognition, and many other areas. We invite contributions
on new sensor fusion algorithms, systems architectures, and experiments
in real applications environments.

Networked Robotics, the second and new conference theme, also concerns robust
integration of multiple and distributed resources for automation & robotics
tasks. However, the integration problem is now generalized beyond sensing to
include also planning, control, and implementation of a physically distributed
system. Advances in networked robotics are important to control of multiple
observation platforms, scheduling & control of advanced manufacturing and
robotic servicing systems, cooperative workgroups & virtual prototyping
environments, telerobotic & supervisory control systems, and the engineering
of collective robotic behaviors. We invite contributions on new algorithms,
systems & communication architectures, system programming & development
tools, and concept demonstrations in real applications environments.

Authors are not required to distinguish which of the two topical conference
themes their submission best addresses, and indeed, we welcome papers with
strong impacts on both themes. Authors should however highlight the main
thrusts of their papers by including within the abstract a keyword list of
up to eight descriptive technical items. As an example, a submission on
a new technique for 3-D object recognition by fusing data from multiple
views might read -- keywords: computer vision, fusing multiple views, 3-D
recognition, invariant linear features, polyhderal models, Bayesian statistics.

Subject: CFP: Robotics, Motion and Machine Vision in the Automotive Industries

28th International Symposium on Automotive Technology & Automation
"Manufacturing and Transportation"

Stuttgart, Germany
18th-22nd September, 1995

The Largest European Automotive Forum
with International Participation

Eight Simultaneous Dedicated Conferences

The 28th ISATA is focusing on "Manufacturing and Transportation" issues, covering
key topics such as Lean/Agile Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping, and introducing
new conferences on Total Quality Management and Advanced Transportation Systems.
We are reintroducing Paint and Powder Coating Applications to provide an update
on the latest advances and technologies, and once again are providing the definitive
forum on Mechatronics, Robotics, Motion and Machine Vision and Logistics Management.

One of the Dedicated Conferences is on:

Robotics, Motion and Machine Vision

Programme Committee Chairman: Mr Peter Cencik, Vision Specialist,
Adept Technology Inc, USA

Robotics, motion control and machine vision play a vital role in any manufacturing.
Historically, the automotive and transportation industry in general has been the
driving force for this technology. The objective of this conference is to bring
academic and manufacturing professionals from robotics and machine vision fields
together, to create bridges between robotics and machine vision, and to support
interaction between academia and manufacturing. Dedicated to practical industrial
applications and existing products, this conference will also focus on economic
viability and performance optimization, highlighting important areas such as
speed, accuracy, software and hardware cost and engineering and maintenance time.
Key topics will include: Vision Inspection and Prototyping, Integrated Sensors,
Mobile Robots and Autonomous Vehicles, Motion Control and Object Tracking.

A paper title and a summary of 100-150 words "in English" should be submitted
to the Secretariat before 31 March 1995. Draft manuscripts for refereeing are
due by 28 April 1995 and final manuscripts for inclusion in the conference
proceedings MUST be received by 16 June 1995 at the latest date. Please note:
The conference language is English and there will be NO simultaneous translation.

~ Exhibition ~ Advertising ~ Sponsorship ~

Stuttgart will be an excellent venue for our acclaimed exhibition, which
consolidates the technical presentations of the symposium. The 27th ISATA
had an attendance of over 1,500 delegates, and the 28th ISATA will therefore
provide the ideal venue to make the contacts that count and meet the top
decision makers in the automotive industry. A variety of promotional
opportunities exist, and to discuss these options further, please fill
in the following form, or call us and ask to speak to our Exhibition
and Promotions Manager.
