STEREO WITHOUT REGULARIZATION

We have developed a maximum likelihood stereo algorithm that avoids
the need for regularization based on smoothing of disparities or their
gradients. The algorithm imposes uniqueness and monotonic ordering
constraints common to other algorithms. A dynamic programming
algorithm allows matching of the two epipolar lines of length $N$ and
$M$ respectively in $O(NM)$ time and in $O(N)$ time if a disparity
limit is set.
The algorithm is independent of the feature primitives. However for
experimental purposes we use individual pixel intensities. This
has the advantages of
(1) Eliminating the feature extraction stage
(2) Eliminating the complex adaptive windows
(3) Producing dense depth maps
A high percentage of correct matches and little smearing of depth
discontinuities is obtained based on matching individual pixel
intensities. Because feature extraction and adaptive windowing are
unnecessary, a fast implementation is possible. A 512x480 image takes
approximately 50 seconds on a SPARC-2 workstation.
The algorithm was described at British Machine Vision
Conference, Leeds, Sept. 21-24, 1992, pp 337-346
(Editors: David Hogg & Roger Boyle Publisher: Springer-Verlag).
If interested, you can obtain the code/report from the vision-list
archive.

Subject: Tesselating a sphere
We are looking for code to perform the following functions, all dealing
with a sphere tesselated into regions of uniform area:
Given your favorite encoding of points on a unit sphere,
determine the index of the cell containing the point.
Given the index of a cell, determine the point on the sphere at
the center of the cell.
Given the index of a cell, determine the index of all immediately
adjacent cells.

And, (OOOOps, goofed), the coordinates origin *MUST* lie in the plane
of your polygon, or else the triangles will form a pyramid, not
a plane.

SECOND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
Royal York Hotel, York, UK
10-12th July 1994
BACKGROUND
Following the success of the first International Workshop on 'Digital Image
Processing and Pattern Recognition Techniques in Mammography', which was held
in San Jose, USA in February 1993, we are pleased to announce the Second
International Workshop to be held in York, UK from 10-12th July 1994. This
meeting will precede a major conference on mammography, 'Symposium
Mammographicum', also to be held in York.
PURPOSE
The workshop will provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of
recent research on all aspects of digital mammography, from image acquistion
to image interpretation and data management. It is hoped that representatives
of all research groups actively working in this area of world-wide interest
will attend the meeting.
VENUE
The workshop will be held in the Royal York Hotel which is centrally located
within the historic city of York. The hotel, built in 1878, is set in private
gardens near the spectacular York Minster. All accomodation is en-suite and
the hotel is well equipped with leisure and fitness facilities.
PROGRAMME
The workshop will begin on the evening of Sunday 10th July with an
introductory presentation by a leading breast radiologist. Presentations of
scientific papers will take place on Monday and Tuesday 11th and 12th July.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Abstracts (1000 word limit) are invited for presentation at the workshop. The
content of the abstract should include a clear statement of the purpose of the
work, a description of the methods employed, a discussion of preliminary
results and comment on the expected content of the full paper.
CLOSING DATE
The closing date for receipt of abstracts is 11 January 1994 and these should
be sent, faxed or emailed to the address below. If you fax or email an
abstract, please also mail us the original. Acceptance letters will be mailed
on Tuesday 1 February 1994.
PROCEEDINGS
The conference proceedings will be published and authors whose work is
accepted will be asked to submit a camera-ready copy chapter by Friday 29
April 1994.
