Organization: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Subject: 3D Grasp Planning

Hi,

I am looking for references (and/or software) on 3D representations
and algorithms suitable for robot grasp planning from range (or stereo)
images.

We are currently using stereo vision to reconstruct the 3D
surface of an object and then performing a 2D grasp analysis by simply
projecting the surface data into the xy plane. This provides a constrained
grasp pose with the gripper oriented parallel to the xy plane. We are now
interested in unconstrained grasping in which the 3D data is used to
determine grasps with arbitrary gripper orientations.

Please respond by E-mail [and post to the List]. Thank you!

WORKSHOP THEME:

Understanding, representing and incorporating information on object
qualities from disparate sources is key to building more general
and functional computer vision systems. Effective representation is
affected by various considerations:
o the quality of the object that is captured by a representation or
description
o the interplay and synthesis of these qualities when multiple
descriptions are available for an object
o the computational aspect of object qualities that participate in
an effective representation
o functional object qualities that guide visual reasoning.

The IEEE Workshop on Qualitative Vision will focus on qualitative
descriptions and representations of the visual environment, and new
algorithms for their computation.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM:

The goal of the IEEE Workshop on Qualitative Vision is to bring
together researchers from different disciplines for the active
discussion of the technical issues and problems related to the
development of qualitative vision techniques. This one day Workshop
will be held in New York City preceeding CVPR93. Sessions will be led
by an invited talk, and refereed papers selected from those submitted
will be presented and published in a Workshop proceedings distributed
by IEEE.

We invite the submission of papers on topics that include:
o the synthesis of multiple visual qualities (e.g., perceptual
grouping, evidential reasoning over disparate sources)
o the study of salient features or object qualities (e.g., robust
features which are invariant under image transformations)
o efficient and innovative visual qualities to support purposive
operations (e.g., as exploited by active vision systems)
o direct perception
o discussion of differences between qualitative and reconstructive
approaches.
This list of topics is not intended to be exhaustive, and inquiries
should be directed to the program committee.

PAPER SUBMISSION:

Papers should be limited to 20 double-space pages, including figures
and references. Papers should include a title page containing the
names and addresses of the authors, and an abstract of up to 200 words.
An additional page titled "Summary Page" should be included which
briefly describes the contribution of the paper. Five copies should be
received at the address below by Friday, December 9, 1992:

Advanced Decision Systems, a division of Booz*Allen & Hamilton Inc.
1500 Plymouth Street, Mountain View, CA 94043-1230.

Decisions on acceptance of papers will be made by March 1, 1993.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Addendum to AI CD-ROM press release [for electronic distribution only].

Because of the tremendous help of the on-line AI community in
helping with the locations and collection of the files on the AI
CD-ROM, Network Cybernetics Corporation is offering the disc to
everyone in the Usenet and Fidonet realm for a special,
discounted price of $59.00 per disc (plus the same
shipping/handling costs as in the regular deal).

We would also like to extend our thanks to all of the people
out there who help make this disc possible by sending
submissions, granting permissions for including files, and
helping with the collection and evaluation process. As
mentioned in the general press release, we intend to revise and
update this disc once a year. If anyone has comments,
complaints, suggestions, or submissions for the next disc they
can be sent to the postal address in the press release, faxed to
Network Cybernetics Corporation at 214-650-1929, or sent via
e-mail to ai-cdrom@ocitor.fidonet.org. We are looking into
getting direct internet access before the end of the year and
hope to have an FTP site for submission the next time around -
hopefully under the designation "ncc.com".

For anyone who wants it, here is a handy order form that you
can print out and send to the address in the press release along
with your check or money order. Please remember that this
discount applies only to on-line service users and not the
general public.

Fourth Australian Conference On Neural Networks

(ACNN'93)

1st - 3rd February 1993

University of Melbourne
Melbourne, Australia

Final Call For Papers

The fourth Australian conference on neural networks will be held in Melbourne
on February 1st-3rd 1993, at the University of Melbourne.

ACNN'93 is the annual national meeting of the Australian Neural Network
community. It is a multi-disciplinary meeting and seeks contributions from
Neuroscientists, Engineers, Computer Scientists, Mathematicians, Physicists
and Psychologists.

This meeting coincides with the national Cognitive Science and Neuroscience
conferences which will also be held in Melbourne in the same week. There is
co-operation and collaboration with these conferences which should make this
meeting a particularly exciting and memorable multi-disciplinary meeting.

ACNN'93 will feature an invited keynote speaker. The program will include
presentations and poster sessions. Proceedings will be printed and
distributed to the attendees.

for presentation of practical work in an environment which will encourage
informal discussions about methodologies and techniques. The posters will be
displayed for a significant period of time and time will be allocated for
authors to be present at their poster for a full session.

Software demonstrations will be possible for authors who bring portable
computers. The organising committee will attempt to provide full-size

the title and abstract, and should leave space for, but not include the
authors' names and affiliations. A cover page should be supplied giving the
title of the paper, the name and affiliation of each author, together with the
postal address, the e-mail address, and the phone and fax numbers of a
designated contact author. The type font should be no smaller than 10 point
except in footnotes. A serif font such as Times or New Century Schoolbook is
preferred.

Four copies of the paper and the front cover should be supplied. This initial
submission must be on hard copy to reach us by Friday, 28 August 1992.

POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS POSTER SESSION
------------------------------------

Due to unprecedented response, enthusiasm and the high standards
of the student session at ACNN this year, we have decided to host
another Postgraduate Students Poster Session at ACNN93. All
postgrads attending the conference are invited to participate.

The poster session will be conducted in the same format as last
year: Posters should describe work central to the student's
thesis topic. For students who are just starting, or unsure of
their ideas, posters can be short descriptions of thesis topics
and preliminary ideas. For more advanced students, detailed
outline of methodology and preliminary results are appropriate.
The main idea is for all students to participate.

If you intend to participate, please send your name,
institution, email address, poster title and 100-word abstract
to janetw@cs.uq.oz.au (or hardcopy to the address below)
by Friday 22nd January 1993. Abstracts and a list of participants
will be distributed at the session.

or email janetw@cs.uq.oz.au
or phone (07)365-2902.
