Subject: Software to detect symmetry/principal axes?

I'm trying to estimate axes of symmetry and/or principal axes of
fairly simple objects, starting from intensity images. Any
preprocessing (e.g. edge detection, grouping) is acceptable. If you
know of any such software available to researchers, I'd appreciate an
email...

I need compute volume between two interpolated surfaces in order to
see how close they are. Is there any way to calculate reasonably
accurate volume? I will appreciate any pointer to a program to do
that in any computer languages.

Subject: Aspect graph generation algorithms sought

I am looking for algorithms for computing the aspect graphs for
3-D objects. I am interested in:
a) ABOVE ALL, public domain software. There does not seem to
be much around.
b) papers or reports with detailed algorithm descriptions;
c) survey papers about visual potential.
My objects are obtained by union, subtraction and intersection of
straight linear generalized cylinders with polygonal section.
Simple cylinders are approximated by facetted polyhedra but real
curved surfaces could be a future target.

My problem is PRACTICAL: I REALLY have to generate aspect graphs
to investigate applications in automated inspection. "Simple but useful"
therefore preferred to "fancy but unimplemented".
I will summarize any results for the List as soon as possible.

The conference is the joint annual meeting of the Israeli Association for
Artificial Intelligence, and the Israeli Association for Computer Vision
and Pattern Recognition, which are affiliates of the Israeli Information
Processing Association.

Papers addressing all aspects of AI and Computer Vision, including, but
not limited to, the following topics, are solicited:

ECCV-92 GENERAL PRESENTATION

The "Second European Conference on Computer Vision" (ECCV-92) will take place
in Santa Margherita Ligure, a pleasant resort in the Italian Riviera very
close to Genova, Portofino and the "Cinque Terre", in conjunction with the
5th Centennial Celebrations for the discovery of America by Cristoforo Colombo.
The announcement of this conference through the Call for Papers has generated
308 proposed contributions. The requirement set by the Programme Committee
to maintain a single-track conference has limited the number of accepted
papers to 16 long papers, 41 short papers and 48 posters.
The proceedings will be published by Springer - Verlag in the "Lecture Notes
in Computer Science"
series.
A copy of the video proceedings, edited by Giovanni Garibotto of Elsag -
Bailey, will also be distributed to all registered participants.

The programme is articulated in three parts:
1) May 18th: an "Esprit Day" will be organized to present ESPRIT projects
active in the field of Computer Vision and its applications.
Participation in the ESPRIT Day will be free of charge and will be open
to everyone interested in vision including participants from outside the
European Community. Organizations wishing to present their project or to
attend the meeting should contact:

2) May 19 to 22: ECCV-92 Conference.
Apart from the official programme the participants will be given ample

ESPRIT Basic Research Working Group on Vision to discuss some specific
topics of Computer Vision. Participation at these workshops is limited
in number and requires a separate registration procedure.

Video Sessions

Three VHS, multistandard (i.e. PAL and NTSC) video equipments will be available
in different places of the Conference Facilities and will be accessible on
a first-come-first-served basis. A few video-sessions will be organized
at the Conference. Participants willing to present their videos should
contact Giovanni Garibotto either in advance or during the conference.
An informal schedule will be posted during the Conference.

Experimental Sessions

Informal experimental sessions will be organized, where it will be
possible to demonstrate the results of software programs on computing
systems available at the Hotel Miramare.

SUN Microsystems-Italy will provide 3 workstations (one SparcStation IPC,
one IPX and one SparcStation 2) connected through ethernet and with
Sun O.S. 4.1.1 operating system, X-Windows 11 R4, Openwindows, and
Sun-Vision. A 150Mb tape driver will be available for downloading the
software source or binary code and, possibly, test images (no image
acquisition equipment will be available). Those interested in participating
in the experimental sessions are advised to contact Massimo Tistarelli at
