Subject: Help - data of human arm movement
Keywords: robotics simulation human-arm

Hello Netters,

I am working on the recognition and representation of human arm
movements. For quite sometime I've been using "synthetic" movement
data of 3D positions of the arm joints and fingers (2). The data is
generated using a program with graphical interface, that interpolates
intermediate positions given the duration, starting and ending
positions.

However, at this stage, this data is'nt sufficient, as it does
not capture the complex nature of the human arm movement.

Could some kind soul out there suggest some name(s) from whom I can request
such data. I need 3D data of the human arm performing some task.

Thanks (really!!) for any help.

Chetan.

Both Sclumberger and SRI did some work in this area several years ago.
The goal was model-based image understanding. The hypothesis was that
images could be described in terms of deformations of simple objects.
A calculus of deformations and lisp-machine based interactive system
were developed to test this. I don't know if this was published in
public journals. There is a example in the 1989(?) SIGGRAPH course notes
on OOP.

The package that came out of SRI and Schlumbnerger interest was called
SuperSketch. It was developed by Alex Pentland and ran on Symbolics
machines. Its current version is called (I think) ThingWorld and is
capable of doing realtime simulation of impacts and other stuff based
on modal analysis of deformations. It runs on Suns.
Alex Pentland is currently with the Media Lab at MIT.
Pertaining tp the deformation topic, tapering of standard
objects is a very useful deformation and is available on SuperSketch.

You might find Alex Pentland et.al.'s work on deformable superquadrics very
interesting. His group at MIT has put together an impressive simulation and
graphics system called Thingworld, in which complex shapes can be programmed
to collide, bend, squash, pinch, dent, splatter, etc. I don't know if they
have implemented twisting, but from what little I know of their mathematics
it would be fairly easy to incorporate into their model.

Pentland originally got interested in superquadrics as a springboard for
model-based vision, but I don't know how well they've worked out for them.

Advertising for their work. I think it may even be publicly available from
the Media Lab.

If I haven't done justice to Pentland, someone should feel free to add to my
description.

cheers,
matt brand

Hello!
I am looking for a code for generalized Hough transform. I
need this for certain pattern recognition tasks that I'm working on.

Thanks in advance.

Research Vacancies (2)

1. Content addressable image databases (3yr contract)
2. Model based motion analysis (1yr contract)

Applications are invited for two Research Associate posts in
the Multimedia Information Systems Lab at Manchester. Both
posts are available now. We are looking for creative people
who are willing to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Applicants should hold a PhD or have some other kind of
postgraduate experience in a relevant area.

Post 1 is for work on advanced image databases. This is a
three year programme of work with the objective of producing
a content based image storage and retrieval system. This po-
sition will be mainly concerned with systems aspects of the
project and would suit someone with a background in computer
science. Familiarity with X11/openwindows would be an advan-
tage although not essential.

Post 2 is concerned with basic research into new techniques
for model based motion analysis. The specific area of in-
terest is robust model based cue generation. The appointment
will initially be for one year but we hope that the project
will be extended.

Salary for both posts will be on the research 1A scale
(11399 to 18165 pounds, under review) according to age and
experience.

To apply, please send me a CV and the name of two referees
(e-mail will be fine).
