Summary: any good texture features out there?

I'm performing pattern recognition job, and I am looking for some
good texture-features to measure. I have a few papers, and they have
some good ideas, but I'd like to see some more.
Does anybody know of some good refrences on textures? I'm looking
for texture features which can described by a single number for a
baysian decision system.

Subject: Camera Calibration Test Object
Hi there, all;
I'm presently working on calibrating a two camera stereo vision system for
robot arm tracking/positioning applications (i.e. two cameras on two arms.)
Would anyone out there have any suggestions as to what a good test
object for that set up would be? Also, what would be the kind
accuracy I could hope for? I know that that depends on hardware, and
the algorithm, but give me a best figure obtainable in 'real world'
conditions using off-the-shelf cameras. (I don't want a guarantee,
just an opinion).
Also:
Would someone out there please direct me to a calibration algorithm which
uses two images of a planar test pattern as basis for calibration? I'm sure
that one exists, but I cannot seem to be able to find it anywhere. Thanks.

Subject: New Toshiba Still Camera ?
Hi Visioners,
I'm looking for information on and a contact at Toshiba for the new
digital still image camera from Toshiba. The camera uses a memory card
to store 6 to 12 images. The cards are read in a special reader that
is attached to your computer. Sounds like a great device for capturing
shots for image analysis etc.
It is called the Electronic Still Toshiba MC200 "Memory Card Camera".
Anybody seen it ? It was shown at the NCGA show in Chicago.
Anybody from Toshiba read this list ? Does anybody know a contact at
Toshiba where we can find out info. If I find out more info myself I'll
post it here.

I'm in the need of 2 C mount lens. We once bought 6.5 mm lens with
manual iris and focus, wich ad a very good geometric distortion
(almost unnoticeable). Unfortunately we are not able to buy from the
same source and the lens don't carry any brand name/model number.
Is there a source (possibly in Europe) of 6.5mm lens with no geometric
distortion and manual iris and focus?
Any info, pointers, ect. is welcome.

The "sunvision" for *SunSparc2* does the similar thing and image
processing. Could it work under Ultrix/X11R4?

Lectureship in Artificial Intelligence/Computer Vision
A University Lectureship is advertised to recruit a person to strengthen
broad teaching in Artificial Intelligence and particular research in
computer vision in robotics. The appointment is in the Information Division
headed by Professor Frank Fallside, which includes the disciplines of
Computing, Control and Communications. Teaching includes lectures to final
year students on AI principles and applications such as computer vision
and robotics, labs and projects. These subjects attract large numbers of
students and we wish to strengthen teaching as a result.
The research group is mainly concentrated on speech processing but includes
other ai applications such as computer vision and robotics centred around
fundamental problems in scene understanding, geometric reasoning, path
planning and assembly planning, rather than robotics technology. The group's
interests include algorithmic, probabilistic, neural network and rule-based
techniques and their applications. It is also interested in parallelism and
makes extensive use of a 64-transputer array. Other facilities include a
network of Suns etc.
The group currently has 5 tenured staff, 2 SERC Advanced Research Fellows,
5 RAs and 39 research students. The appointment is to strengthen and build
up the computer vision side. The group has strong support from UK and
European research grants etc. The appointee will be expected to build this up
on the computer vision robotics side and to supervise research students.
The person appointed will have relevant qualifications and a good research
record in computer vision.
The advertised closing date is 18 July 1991. The intention is to appoint on
1 October 1991 or soon after, although a later start could be entertained.
The appointment is initially for 3 years, followed by tenure appropriately.
Current UL scales are in range 15,444 - 23,819 UKL.

Hello everybody,
About one month ago, I posted a request for information on image file formats.
Though I did not receive a lot of answers (Thanks to all those that answered),
I did receive a lot of requests for the results. This confirms my view, that
the situation of image file formats is a bit messy, and a lot of people,
including myself, are confused with such diversity. I decided to post the
answers rather than sending them to those who have requested.
* Ray Suorsa (grendel@opos.arc.nasa.gov) send the results of a questionnaire
on image file formats, and some observations based on the 108 responses.
There is a list of 99 file formats being used, though most of them with only
one preference. I'll list below those with 4 or more preferences:

* Dr. Ming XIE (ming.xie@mirsa.inria.fr) sent a description of a TIFF like
format, called DSF (Data Storage Format) aiming the storage of all sort of
results generated by a dynamic vision system (e.g., camera parameters, image
sequences, sets of contour chains, etc..). DSV is implemented as C++ class.
It looked to me an interesting idea. Contact Ming Xie for details.
* Some people have sent some references on where to find details about
image formats. I am transcribing the references, though I haven't yet accessed
them all.

TIFF: There is a whole chapter on TIFF in the Microsoft Windows Development
Kit manual. It is a well written text with some examples and advice on
how to write TIFF readers or writers. There is an interesting
discussion on what are the advantages and disadvantages of fixed
format files, and tagged formats.
I found the TIFF format very powerful, though very complicated to
implement, specially the TIFF reader. It looks like it is a format to
stay for a long time. Microsoft actually manages all TIFF developments
and extensions.
PostScript: I read the PostScript manual, and found that it was reasonably
easy to write a program to convert a grey level image into PostScript.
PostScript and TIFF do not compete, since the former is basically a
way of describing a page layout (that may include images). TIFF aims
to be a exchange image file format for DeskTop Publishing.
GIF and TIFF: "Graphics Formats" by GL Graef, Byte, Sept. 1989, pp 305-310
ISO Standard: Recently (Digest No.25), there was a proposal for an ISO
(International Standards Office) standard for image format.
