3D Visual Interpretation and Multi-Sensor Fusion

Applications are invited for two SERC-funded Research
Associateships to work on the fusion of passive and active two and
three dimensional visual data, the construction of unified scene
descriptions and their interpretation. This is part of a
collaborative project between several university and industrial
sites and is aimed at the production of advanced vision systems
which have generic properties but are nevertheless capable of
visual inspection to a high degree of accuracy. The persons
appointed will join a lively research group at Heriot-Watt working
on several aspects of computer vision and visual perception.

Applicants should have an Honours Degree in a relevant technical
discipline, together with subsequent postgraduate experience. If
appropriate, registratiuon for a higher degree is encouraged.
Each post is tenable for a minimum of two years and a maximum of
three years, commencing as soon as possible after the 1st April
1990. The starting salary will be in the range L=9816 to L=16014
depending on age and experience. Enquiries should be directed
initially to the Staff Officer, Heriot-Watt University, Riccarton,
Edinburgh EH14 4AS, from whom further information and application
forms may be obtained. The closing date for applications is 23rd
February 1990.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr. Andrew Wallace at the
Department of Computer Science, tel. 031-225-6465 x542

Subject: Postdoc Fellowship: Oculomotility And Direction Perception

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP AVAILABLE IN
OCULOMOTILITY AND DIRECTION PERCEPTION
AT THE SMITH-KETTLEWELL EYE RESEARCH INSTITUTE, SAN FRANCISCO

A 2-3 year NEI/INRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship is available in the
laboratory of Dr Joel M Miller, where several lines of research provide
opportunities for a Fellow to pursue an existing project, or his or her own
related interests.
Our newest project concerns the patterns and limits of saccadic gain
adaptation in humans, and will study this very tractable form of neural
plasticity to make inferences about the physiologic and mathematical properties
of underlying modifiable structures.
We also study direction perception around the time of saccadic eye
movements to provide insights into the functional connectivity of visual and
motor systems. Various labs have generated conflicting results in this area;
our results (ARVO, 89) have begun to clarify matters.
We have developed an eye muscle force transducer that is chronically-
implantable with minimal effect on normal ocular motility (ARVO, 90). A
trained monkey is now providing correlated eye position and horizontal rectus
force signals, which will support inferences about agonist-antagonist
coordination and globe response to muscle forces.
A biomechanical modeling effort is also ongoing, using binocular alignment
data and MRI scanning to develop computer-based aids for diagnosis and
treatment planning in strabismus (ARVO, 88; Vis Res, 1989).
Fellowship applicants should have or expect a PhD or MD degree by the
start of the Fellowship, and must be US Citizens or Permanent Residents.
Strong computer skills (mainly Unix, C and MacII) are desirable.
The Smith-Kettlewell visual and oculomotor research faculty includes:
Alexander I Cogan, MD PhD; Carter C Collins, PhD; Arthur Jampolsky, MD; Takuji,
Kasamatsu, MD PhD; Edward Keller, PhD; Suzanne P McKee, PhD; Anthony N Norcia,
PhD; Alan B Scott, MD; Erich Sutter, PhD; Christopher W Tyler, PhD. Regular
scientific activities include weekly colloquia and journal club meetings. We
offer staffed facilities for electronic and mechanical design and construction,
medical illustration, photography, histology, and electronic communication.
Candidates should contact, without delay:
