From: Martin A. Fischler <Fischler@IU.AI.SRI.COM>
Subject: Distance Maps

In two recent vision-list messages, there has been a request for
information and discussion about distance transforms and their
applications. I would like to note that the first published results on
many of the items mentioned was in a paper by M.A. Fischler and P.
Barrett, "An iconic transform for sketch completion and shape
abstraction,"
Comput. Graphics and Image Processing (CGIP), vol. 13,
pp. 334-360, 1980. These results include:

(1) The Labeled Distance Transform and its application to generation
of Voronoi diagrams, artifact free skeletons, region growing in
constant time, determining the closest surrounding region to each
given image region, etc.

(2) A four-pass true Euclidean distance transform. This is almost
identical to the somewhat later publication by Danielsson and and was
based on results obtained in unpublished work by Lynn Quam.

HOW CAN I CONNECT A MEGAPLUS CAMERA TO A SUN 3-160 ?

I would like to connect a Kodak-Videk-Megaplus camera to a Sun workstation
(3-160). Therefore, I would be grateful for any information about proprietary
VME interfaces, device drivers etc that may be available.

Thank you, regards,
David Pycock

Subject: Boundary tracking.

I would be glad if I could get some pointers/pseudo-code/code to
boundary tracking algorithms that can work with binary images.
I would be glad even if I could get some refs. that list these.
Speed is an important criteria and they should be able work
with multiple objects in the scene.

thanks in advance.

DARPA SPONSORED GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIPS
IN PARALLEL PROCESSING

The University of Maryland's Institute for Advanced Computer
Studies and Center for Automation Research are soliciting
applications from qualified graduate students for research
assistantships in parallel processing. These assistantships
are made available by funds provided by the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Information Science
Technology Office through a contract from NASA Ames Research
Center. Proposals can address either fundamental issues in
parallel processing (e.g. architectures, algorithms, programming
languages, performance evaluation, etc.) or significant appli-
cations of parallel processing. Research proposals that have
an experimental component will be given highest consideration
for funding.

Awards will be made for one year of support, with possible
extension to a second year based on progress made during the
first year. Funds will be provided as part of the award to
the student's university for salary, tuition, and benefits.
The University of Maryland will provide direct travel support
to an annual workshop held in conjunction with the program
at which students will deliver papers describing their
research and interact with leading scientists and engineers
in parallel processing. If requested, students will be
provided with free access to the University of Maryland's
Connection Machine II.

Applications are solicited for June 1989 funding. Only
one student per department will be funded.

WHO CAN APPLY

Applicants must be:
* U.S. citizens and
* doctoral students who have completed all course
work and preliminary exam requirements.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications (3 copies) should be submitted to
Prof. Larry Davis, Director, UMIACS, University of Maryland,
College Park, MD 20742 by January 26, 1989. An application
consists of:

* a short research proposal (at most 3 single spaced
typewritten pages)
* a budget endorsed by an appropriate official at the
student's university. (The budget should only
include salary, tuition, benefits and overhead, if
charged.)
* a letter of support from the student's faculty
advisor who will serve as principal investigator
* curricula vitae of the student and advisor

CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------

NEURAL NETWORKS FOR AUTOMATIC TARGET RECOGNITION
MAY 11--13, 1990

This research conference at the cutting edge of neural network science and
technology will bring together leading experts in academe, government, and
industry to present their latest results on automatic target recognition in
invited lectures and contributed posters. Automatic target recognition is a
key process in systems designed for vision and image processing, speech and
time series prediction, adaptive pattern recognition, and adaptive
sensory-motor control and robotics. It is one of the areas emphasized by the
DARPA Neural Networks Program, and has attracted intense research activity
around the world. Invited lecturers include:

JOE BROWN, Martin Marietta, "Multi-Sensor ATR using Neural Nets"

GAIL CARPENTER, Boston University, "Target Recognition by Adaptive Resonance:
ART for ATR"

NABIL FARHAT, University of Pennsylvania, "Bifurcating Networks for Target
Recognition"
