CALL FOR PAPERS

SECOND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COMPUTATIONAL SEMANTICS (IWCS II)
January 8-10, 1997, Tilburg, The Netherlands

The Tilburg Linguistics Department will host the Second Workshop on
Computational Semantics, which will take place in Tilburg, The
Netherlands, from 8 - 10 January 1997. The aim of the workshop is to
bring together researchers involved in all aspects of natural language
computational semantics.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

The workshop will focus on the computational aspects of formal semantic
theories and on theoretical issues involved in the development of
natural language processing systems. Papers are sought in areas which
include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

* underspecified semantic representations: definition and use
* use of context in interpretation
* the semantics - pragmatics interface
* dynamic interpretation in text and dialogue
* incremental interpretation
* language and visual information
* speech acts and interpretation
* information packaging
* computational lexical semantics
* context modelling
* interpretation and inference

All submitted papers will be refereed by an international programme
committee.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Authors are asked to submit an original paper of maximally 10 pages
and maximally 8000 words by Sunday September 1, 1996. Email a
postscript version of the paper to:

Computational.Semantics@kub.nl

Papers should be prepared with LaTeX. Each title page should contain
the names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of all
authors. Please use the LaTeX header file which is attached to this
Call.

LaTeX source codes of final papers are due on November 15, 1996. A
copy of the proceedings will be available for each participant at the
workshop.

GUIDELINES FOR PAPER SUBMISSIONS

Papers should be submitted by email in Postscript form. Accepted papers
will be published in the proceedings, which will be available at the time
of the conference; we also aim at publishing a selection of the accepted
papers in book form. All papers should contain:

- a list of approximately 5 keywords
- an abstract
- a conclusion section

For the production of the proceedings, final versions of accepted papers
will have to be submitted in LaTeX form; it is therefore advisable to use
LaTeX from the start. Detailed instructions for layout will be available
at the Web page (see below). For a start, we suggest that you use the
following LaTeX format as the basis for producing the Postscript file:

\documentstyle[11pt,a4,epsf]{article}
\setlength{\textwidth}{15cm}

Please refer to bibliographical items using author names and year of
publication, rather than by numbers, and sort the bibliography
alphabetically.

SIXTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND STATISTICS

January 4-7, 1997
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida

http://www.stat.washington.edu/aistats97/

PURPOSE:
This is the sixth in a series of workshops which has brought together
researchers in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and in Statistics to discuss
problems of mutual interest. The exchange has broadened research in both fields
and has strongly encouraged interdisciplinary work. Papers on all aspects of
the interface between AI & Statistics are encouraged.

FORMAT:
To encourage interaction and a broad exchange of ideas, the presentations will
be limited to about 20 discussion papers in single session meetings over three
days (Jan. 5-7). Focussed poster sessions will provide the means for presenting
and discussing the remaining research papers. Papers for poster sessions will
be treated equally with papers for presentation in publications.

Attendance at the workshop will *not* be limited.

The three days of research presentations will be preceded by a day of tutorials
(Jan. 4). These are intended to expose researchers in each field to the
methodology used in the other field. The tutorial speakers are A. P. Dawid
(University College London), Michael Jordan (MIT), Tom Mitchell (Carnegie
Mellon), and Mike West (Duke University).

TOPICS OF INTEREST:

- automated data analysis and knowledge representation for
statistics
- statistical strategy

This list is not intended to define an exclusive list of topics
of interest. Authors are encouraged to submit papers on any topic
which falls within the intersection of AI and Statistics.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Three copies of an extended abstract (up to 4 pages) should be sent to
