INTRODUCTION TO UCIS'96
Texts, documents, electronic databases and other interactive
environments play an increasingly important role at home, at school
and at the workplace. The cognitive processes by which people use such
complex information systems are subject to an increased attention on
the part of psychologists, educational scientists and human factors
specialists. UCIS'96 will bring together researchers from these
different disciplines, and to promote communication and
cross-fertilization of theoretical and experimental advances made in
each discipline.
Participants are invited to submit original contributions on any or a
combination of the following topics:
* Processing of complex or multiple texts
* Integration of textual and pictorial information
* Learning with pictures, texts and documents
* Text models and document literacy
* Training of information usage skills
* Knowledge acquisition in complex learning environments
* Ergonomic aspects of information systems
* Information systems and distance education
* Use of multimedia computerized systems
Proposals on related topics will also be considered.
The official language of the workshop is English. A poster session
will be conducted in French.
SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL
Participants are invited to submit proposals in one of the following
formats:
- Regular paper: Oral presentation of an original research study
- Position paper: Shorter oral presentation of an original position on
a current issue.
- Interactive poster: Posters will be grouped in thematic sessions
with a discussant. There will be time for oral discussion of the posters.
Poster proposals may written be either in French or English.
Other proposals must be written in English.
Demonstrations will be considered only in addition to presentations in one
of the above formats. Demonstrators will be responsible for providing the
necessary equipment.
All proposals should include the following:
A cover page with author name(s), affiliation, mail, phone, fax and email,
the requested presentation format, and a list of keywords preferably taken
in the list of topics.
- A 200 word abstract
- A 2-3 page paper, including references of cited papers. The paper should
include as many of the following as applicable: Theoretical background and
rationale; method; results; Discussion and conclusions. In case of studies in
progress, the paper should clearly mention what additional information will
be provided during the meeting.
Proposals should comply with the APA manuscript preparation guidelines
except for the following:
Proposals should be printed in Times 12pt or equivalent, laser-quality,
single-spaced, with 2.5cm (1 inch) margins. Proposals in fax or email
format will be accepted provided that they are confirmed in printed mail
within 7 days.

WELCOME TO POITIERS!
Poitiers is located 350 km southwest from Paris, France. Poitiers can
be reached through Paris in only 1:30 hour by fast train (TGV).
Poitiers is a pretty mid-size city with many treasures of
Romanesque architecture. It is a few minutes from "Futuroscope", the
European Image Park. Also of interest for visiting near Poitiers are
Cognac, the Loire castles, the Dordogne (with world famous prehistoric
caves) and the Atlantic coast, usually mild and sunny in September.

WORKSHOP ISSUES
The workshop aims to stimulate collaborative research within the AI subfields
of computer vision, natural language, and spatio-temporal reasoning, working
towards the goal of deriving meaningful descriptions of scene content. Most
current work in computer vision develops automated techniques that extract
information from images without high-level knowledge of what is being seen or
consideration of the high-level goals of intelligent visual agents. However, to
deal with real-world visual tasks, it seems that contextual knowledge of some
sort is required. The issues we want to address involve questioning what
representation and reasoning is required for such tasks. In particular, for
many visual application systems (for example, advanced visual surveillance,
multimedia and geographic information systems, even automated driving) there is
a general need to generate conceptual descriptions of objects and their
behaviour from images. Papers should address this central theme.
Research topics that address the issues of representing visual knowledge and
processing images to obtain conceptual descriptions include:
o Context-based vision.
o Integration of vision and natural language.
o Spatial and temporal reasoning in images.
o Representation and control of visual behaviours.
In addition to presenting original research, participants are asked to address
the following questions:
o How does your work draw upon, differ from, refine or extend existing
computer vision, natural language, and AI approaches?
What are the limitations and assumptions of your approach?
o How should domain knowledge be represented? What is your underlying
knowledge representation and reasoning formalism and what issues have
motivated your choice?
o What are the open questions?
ATTENDANCE
It is intended that between 30 and 50 people will attend the workshop. All
workshop participants are expected to register for the main ECCV conference.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Papers must be a maximum of 30 pages. Title, abstract, figures and references
must be included within this length limit. Four copies should be mailed to the

CALL FOR PAPERS
International Conference on
Successes and Pitfalls of Knowledge-Based Systems
in Real-World Applications
Bangkok, Thailand
October 28-30, 1996
SPONSORS (more to follow) : French Foreign Ministry
IOS Press
OBJECTIVE
Since the implementation of the first expert systems, there has always
been a number of Industrial Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS). We consider the
term 'KBS' in the large, i.e., expert systems, tutoring systems,
information systems, active databases, application of logic programming
and of fuzzy logic, neural networks, etc. are considered here as KBSs
because they use Artificial Intelligence techniques. Few of the early
systems remain. The most successful systems have been presented in a
special issue of AI Journal (Volume 59, 1993). However, other
systems--successful and unsuccessful ones--represent considerable
experience that may provide many useful lessons for the community.
Successes and failures occur for a variety of reasons that, once shared,
may permit others to save time, work and money.
This conference is an attempt to gather and share all this knowledge. Its
goal is to focus on the experience acquired during design, development and
use of KBSs, rather than focus mainly on technical details. In order to
share easily and compare the experiences, the papers must address the
following points (describing reasons for any choices, any problems, any
chosen solutions, etc.):
1. Context of the project (initial motivation, domain, addressed problem,
constraints on the project, role of end-users, position of the various
actors at the start of the project, etc.).
2. Description of the system (particularities, problems encountered during
the design process and the development process, chosen representation
language, integration in the working place, validation by end-users,
etc.).
3. Results of the project (reasons for its success or failure, initial
cost vs. final cost, parts that are reusable, desired extension by
end-users, user's evaluation of the system, etc.).
4. Organizational issues (integration in working places, changes in the
working environment, alteration of the user's work, adaptating the working
environment to the system vs. adaptating the system to the working
environment, efforts to persuade people to use the system, etc.).
5. Lessons for the future (mistakes to avoid, points to check beforehand,
needed paradigms as cooperation and explanation, needs for maintenance of
the operational version, update, evolution, need for incremental knowledge
acquisition, etc.).
PRACTICAL DETAILS
Schedule:
