Date: Mon, 21 Feb 1994 16:03:46 GMT

Does anyone know of references describing, or projects developing HPSG
grammars of Spanish? The formalism does not have to be precisely as
described in Vol. 2 of "Information Based Syntax and Semantics".
Grammars in version 1 of the theory would also be of value.

Any help or pointers will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Workshop "Integrating Object-Orientation and Knowledge Representation"
on ECAI 94, 8-12 August 94, Amsterdam, TheNetherlands

Object-oriented, conceptual, and frame-based modeling of
domains have much in common: All rely heavily on object-centered domain
representations employing the benefits of class hierarchies and inheritance.
However, whereas object-orientation puts much emphasis on practical
programming issues and behavioral aspects of the model, knowledge
representation focuses on well-defined semantics in order to achieve
consistent, descriptive models. Frame-based techniques somehow cover the
middle ground. Meanwhile, each of these are individually well understood.
Several workshops have been conducted to discuss the differences between them.

However, developers and researchers who are trying to use object-oriented
programming techniques in the realization of knowledge-based AI systems are
more and more interested in means for *integrating* the techniques. Moreover,
clarification of differences with respect to integration is still far from
complete.

This workshop is going to focus on aspects of integration of object-orientation
and knowledge representation, i.e.:
- Clarification of differences
- KR within an OO language/environment
- KR and OO in an integrated language/environment
- Using KR to support OO modeling (e.g. OO core concepts to support
inferencing, classification, planning, automatic design etc.)
- Using OO to enhance KR modeling (e.g. extending KR formalisms with
a computational model to represent behavior)

Participants will be required to submit a brief paper (max 5 pages)
describing their relevant experience and their position on the means,
scope, and features of such an integration. Please note that this
workshop is going to focus *strongly* on the integration aspect.
Thus, papers addressing either of OO, FR, and KR individually
will not be accepted.

The workshop will be one day and its format will depend on the content
and diversity of submissions. Please send submissions preferably
via e-mail (ASCII or Postscript) to all of the organizers,
or send three copies to R. Cunis (in Europe) or to D. de Champeaux (in the US).
