I am trying to get the LOB (Lancester Olsen Bergen) corpus. Can anyone
tell me where I could get it from?
Also, I am trying to get hold of the following papers:
Hemphill,C. "A Chart Parser for Stochastic Unification Grammars",
Technical Report, 1988.
(I suppose it was a technical report with Texas Instruments, Computer
Science Center, in Dallas)
Hindle, Donald. 1983. "User manual of Fidditch, a deterministic parser."
Naval Research Laboratory technical Memorandum 7590-142.
Does anyone know the email addresses of the authors?
Joerg

Subject: Query: User manuals for natural language interfaces
We will soon be designing a user manual for our natural language interface
(NLI) to a statistical database. We would be interested in obtaining:
o papers about the design of user manuals for NLIs
o actual user manuals for other NLIs (even better).
Thank you for your help,

Subject: Query: Seeking related work
Keywords: Systemic grammar, grammar, inferencing

I am currently working on my PhD, at the University of Leeds, England,
and am seeking *any* work related to my thesis topic, a description
of which follows:
The (working) title of my thesis is (approx.) Grammar Based Inference.
Previous work in AI has sought to make logical inferences from
natural language input by translating the given text into some form
of knowledge represetation language, easily manipulable by the
computer, processing this, and then translating the result back into
the NL. However, I seek to escape this translation process by
getting the system to act on the words and phrases *directly*, without
recourse to KRLs. The process will involve no NL to KRL translation
time, and all the text manipulation will be understandable to a
non-expert user. At present I am looking to implement this under
Halliday's systemic grammar, which appears to be particularly
good for a weak form of this process.
At present I can find *no* references to similar work all of which
seems to be tied up with KRL-related work. I would therefore be *very*
grateful to anyone who can possibly give me some references, or the
name of someone to contact. My supervisor, Peter Mott, first proposed
this idea at the Turing '90 conference (proceedings to be published
1993) --- and no related literature was known at the time.
In anticipation,
Nik Silver.

I am looking for a product or information on any research being done on
optical character recognition of Japanese Kanji.
I am trying to evaluate whether it is feasible to interface kanji recongition
software/hardware to a natural language product to scan through documents
in japanese. Estimates of accuracy and speed is critical.
I would appreciate any leads - product name, person name, phone number -
anything. Please reply to hsohn@sra.com. Thanks.

Regarding all the recent soc.culture.german discussion about foreign
language translation software, people interested in serious machine
translation production might wish to check with the Mass. Route 128
firm Peritus, which includes this activity as one of its specialties.
Peritus is an affiliate of a major European computer vendor
- -unfortunately not Wang! :-) . The key person to contact there is
Miguel Brazao (Wang's R&D Director of Product Internationalization
until recently). As he is usually out at customer sites, the best
way to contact him is to send FAXs to Peritus at (617) 221-7122.
They use a new approach to solve the problems of machine translation.
The problem with machine translation has been that it requires a
tremendous amount of manual post-editing. Peritus has some enabling
technology that can make the use of machine translation viable. They
use language normalization techniques, based on neural networks.
They are able to achieve the re-use of translation work by using
Knuth's web technology. They use transparent hot-linking, allowing
revisions to be be manageable.
