Subject: request for references [abbreviation strategies]
I'm looking for references to research regarding strategies used in
abbreviating words in English: What sorts of patterns are typically
found in correlating abbreviations with their expansions? What criteria
may be used to determine whether an ad hoc abbreviation is likely to be
understood correctly by others?
Thanks in advance for any pointers.

You might also want to check out the article in the July issue of IEEE
Computer by Sanjay Mittal, Clive L. Dym, and Mahesh Morjaria, "PRIDE: An
expert system for the design of paper handling systems", pp. 102-114.
See the section "Acquisition of knowledge from expert designers". Mitch
Model talked about knowledge acquisition in his "Expert Systems II"
tutorial at AAAI two weeks ago (not that that's of much help to anyone
now).
