FROM THE DESK OF THE EDITOR:

Welcome to the SOUND BLASTER DIGEST number 8! We've been
running for a very good and prosperous 2/3 of a year now, and
it's only going to get better!

Work on the SBD has not been very good this month, though.
We only have one article sent from a reader this month, to start.
Another problem has been that there has been an equipment
malfunction with the 3.5" drive used to make copies to mail to
subscribers who want the magazine in this format. This has
delayed last months subscriptions, and this months indefinitely.
We hope that the problem will be fixed up soon so I can mail
them off.

A few minor changes in this month's format. I am taking out
altogether the section on LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, as our mail
volume is now too large to continue to print. Also there are
fixes in a few minor page-break problems and such.

Next, concerning the READERS SURVEY: Thanks to those who
marked the small spelling mistake on the form: it has been
corrected. Thus far we have received a few readers surveys, but
not many. We need your input to make this work. So please fill
out the form, staple or tape it into the envelope, place
sufficient postage on the envelope and mail it to me. I need all
the surveys I can get. This helps me in the writing of the
magazine to make it a better one, and it also allows us to
publish at the beginning of 1992 the year's best Shareware and
Commercial software. This will only work if you mail in the
form!

Hope you enjoy this months DIGEST!

HINTS & TIPS:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Here's a simple tip for those wishing to convert .ROL files
to .CMF files. To cut down on the amount of space the .CMF file
will require, use Ad Lib's VISUAL COMPOSER to decrease the number
of instruments necessary for the song. If the song uses no
percussion voices, be sure that the .ROL file is set to Melodic
mode. If there are other voices that are not being used, be sure
to assign to them an instrument that is used extensively in the
piece. This cuts down on the number of instruments that need to
be saved into the .CMF file, and thus saves you space!

SHAREWARE REVIEW: JUMPMAN LIVES!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Written by Jim Tinlin.

This game has been a personal favourite for a LONG time and
when I recently downloaded the Shareware version of this I
thought I was in heaven.

Apogee Software has put out some very impressive Shareware
efforts lately that have caught my eye. One of them, Commander
Keen, sparked my interest because of the impressive graphics for
a Shareware program. When I found Jumpman I figured it would be
a stick figured guy bouncing along with "boing-boing" noises. I
was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was a full-fledged
replication of the original game that won many accolades when it
first came out.

Although it only supports FM sound, I thought I would write
a review of it because of the effort by the authors. The 256
colour VGA screens, smooth animation, and clean sound just blew
me away.

How can someone put out a Shareware program like this? Is
it crippled? Will it blow up after 3 uses? Well, the answer is
that the Shareware version is a fully functional version, it just
doesn't have all the levels and the level editor that the
registered version has. To me, not a great loss, as I'm having a
tough time getting through the levels I have now!

This is by no means one of the most sophisticated games on
the market, but if you like the simpler things in life, this
should be a #1 on your list, even if you don't get the Commercial
Registered version (which is only $30 for all 45 levels and the
level editor), you'd be very happy with the Shareware Version.

INCLUDED FILES:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

This month's included file is my version of the song
Something, written by George Harrison, and originally preformed
by The Beatles on their Abbey Road album. The file should be
called SOMETHNG.CMF.

Also included is the file SURVEY.FRM, which contains the SBD
READERS SURVEY and mailing envelope. Please take the time out to
fill out this form and mail it to us.

If you have transcribed a song from sheet, or made your own,
why not send it in? Any song received should be in .CMF format,
and must have been entered by yourself to be considered. As
always, you will get credit for your work, and if we use it, I
will send you your disk back with the edition of the SBD where it
appears!

--------------------

PASS IT ON...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=

For the past few months, the SBD has been enjoying world-
wide readership. This is thanks to you, the readers, who either
subscribe to the magazine, or have downloaded it off of your
favourite local BBS, and have re-uploaded it elsewhere.

Sadly, many still have a hard time finding the SBD. If you
are a SBD reader, please do others a favour and be sure to pass
it on to other systems! Even if you only call at 300 bps it only
takes about 8 minutes to send the average SBD.

The SBD is uploaded each and every month to the following
BBS's. You can find their numbers in the BBS list above:

THE MUSICAL CHAIR
SUPER SONIC BBS

For those of you calling THE MUSICAL CHAIR long distance:
You may use the user name SB DIGEST and the password MUSICAL to
log-on and download the newest SBD with a minimum of hassle and
fuss to save you money.

Thanks once again for your support!

WRAPPING IT UP...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Well, this issue wasn't very big, but we're trying.

And now, as always, I'd like to thank the following people:

Jim Tinlin for writing the review on JUMPMAN LIVES!,

Rod Toll for trying to make my 3.5" subscriptions before his
drive died,

and, as always, thanks to my loving Karen O'Hearn: it is
for you I dedicate each and every success in life.

Also, one special announcement: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CANADA!
I've been many places, and seen many things, and by far the best
is to be seen in the country I call my home. You may be
troubled, but you'll always be home to me.

Thanks for reading this month, and we hope to see you here
again this time next month!
