UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, IRVINE
Department of Information and Computer Science
Faculty Position in Artificial Intelligence
The Department of Information and Computer Science (ICS) is seeking to
fill a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of
artificial intelligence (AI) particulary machine learning, neural
networks, nonmonotonic reasoning, approximate reasoning, computational
neuroscience, model-based reasoning, planning, or cognitive modeling.
We are looking for new faculty with strong research records who would
thrive in a highly productive but friendly setting; applicants must
possess a Ph.D. and show excellent promise of a distinguished research
career. Duties include teaching both at the graduate and undergraduate
level in the ICS curriculum. Preference will be given to a junior
appointment, but a tenured position may be possible for an
exceptionally qualified applicant.
Currently the AI group consists of five faculty members, 30 graduate
students pursuing doctoral degrees, and several international
visitors with the following research interests: machine learning,
cognitive modeling, explanation and learning, tractable inferences,
constraint-based reasoning, learning and problem solving, and
computational neuroscience. The AI group has been responsible for \$3
million of extramural research funding since 1987, and current
research funding totals roughly $1 million per year.
In addition to AI, the ICS Department has research groups in the areas
of computer systems design, parallel processing, software, computer
networks and distributed systems, algorithms and data structures, and
social and managerial analysis of computing. ICS faculty emphasize
core computer science as well as research in emerging areas of the
discipline, with effective interdisciplinary collaborative ties to
colleagues in neurobiology, cognitive science, management,
engineering, and the social sciences. The department currently has 29
full-time faculty positions and more than 120 Ph.D. students.
Department equipment includes approximately 175 workstations,
primarily Sparc 1's and 2's, Sun-3's and Sun-4's. Two large
multiprocessor Sequents and a Hypercube are available, as well as
approximately 300 Macintosh Plus's and II's. There are also a few HP,
DEC, NeXT, and Symbolics workstations. All our major workstations and
computers are tied together with networks, which are gatewayed to the
campus network, and from there, to national and international
networks. In addition, department members have access to campus-wide
computing resources as well as regional super-computer access.
UC Irvine is located in Orange County, three miles from the Pacific
Ocean adjacent to Newport Beach, and approximately forty miles south
of Los Angeles. The campus is situated in the heart of a national
center of high-technology enterprise. Both the campus and the
enterprise area are growing rapidly and offer exciting professional
and cultural opportunities. Salaries and benefits are competitive.
Special housing assistance is available from the university, including
newly built, for-sale housing within short walking distance from the
Department.

Second Japanese Knowledge Acquisition for Knowledge-Based Systems
Workshop
Sponsored by
Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence
In Cooperation with
Information Processing Society of Japan
Japan Society for Software Science and Technology
The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication
Engineers
Venue & Date
Kobe International Conference Hall (Kobe)
November 9 - 11, 1992
Advanced Research Laboratory, Hitachi Ltd. (Hatoyama)
November 12 - 13, 1992
A problem in the process of building knowledge-based systems is
acquiring and modeling appropriate problem-solving knowledge. The
objective of this workshop is to assemble theoreticians and
practitioners of AI who recognize the need for developing methods
and systems that assist the knowledge acquisition process.
The workshop will be in two parts: a three-day open meeting in Kobe
and two-day workshop in Hatoyama (near Tokyo). A major goal of the
workshop is to encourage vigorous interaction and exchange of idea.
Consequently, the workshop participation in Hatoyama will be kept
small - about 40 participants. This will be done by limiting
workshop participation to one of the authors for any given paper,
although some exceptions can be made based upon requests to the
organizers. In addition, persons not submitting papers can request
to participate by sending a summary of their research and/or
publications in knowledge acquisition to the organizers. Acceptance
for participation in the Hatoyama workshop will be decided upon by
the organizers. Papers will be presented at both workshops. There
will be tutorial and invited talk sessions in the open workshop.
Best paper awards are available for foreign students to cover a
part of their travel expenses (100,000 yen/person).
Papers are invited for consideration in all aspects of knowledge
acquisition for knowledge-based systems, including (but not restricted
to):
o Transfer/modeling of expertise - systems that obtain and model
knowledge from experts.
o Transfer/modeling of expertise - manual knowledge acquisition
methods and techniques.
o Apprenticeship, explanation-based, and other learning systems;
integration of such systems with other knowledge acquisition
techniques.
o Methods for capturing design knowledge and requirements
o Issues in cognition and expertise that affect the knowledge
acquisition process.
o Extracting and modeling of knowledge from text.
o Eliciting and modeling knowledge from multiple sources.
o Integration of knowledge acquisition techniques within a single
system; integration of knowledge acquisition systems with other
systems (hypermedia, database management systems, simulators,
spreadsheets...).
o Knowledge acquisition methodology and training.
o Validation of knowledge acquisition techniques; the role of
knowledge acquisition techniques in validating knowledge-based
systems.
Five copies of a draft paper (up to 20 pages) should be sent to
Riichiro Mizoguchi before March 31st, 1992. Acceptance notices will be
mailed by June 30th. Camera-ready copies should be returned before
August 31st. A preprint volume will be distributed at the workshop.
