The Department of Computer Science, University of Ottawa, together with the
School of Computer Science, Carleton University, has obtained a
grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
for a project entitled "Machine Learning Applied to Software Reuse".
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position on this project.
The ideal candidate will have a record of original work in symbolic
learning, case-based or analogical reasoning, or AI-based software
design tools. The position is available immediately and guaranteed
for a two and a half year period. Candidates must have a Ph.D. prior
to accepting the position.
The postdoctoral position is a crucial part of the project's team,
consisting of three faculty and several graduate students at both
M.Sc. and PhD. level. The postdoctoral fellow will actively
participate in all aspects of the project, including all major
research decisions. Duties include exploratory research in the area
of the project, participation in the design and development of a
prototype system, participation in supervision of graduate students
involved in the project, and participation in the publications
resulting from the project.
The research environment in Ottawa includes a joint graduate program
with some 35 CS faculty, of which six work in AI, a weekly machine
learning seminar, and a team of some 15 graduate students actively
interested in machine learning, as well as a number of
externally-funded research projects in machine learning. Ottawa,
Canada's capital, is a pleasant city of 800,000, surrounded by
beautiful countryside, with a unique bilingual atmosphere. Interested

Hitachi Dublin Laboratory
The Hitachi Dublin Laboratory is a research laboratory that has
been set up as a campus company by Hitachi, Ltd. in association
with Trinity College. Basic and applied research is carried out in
the general area of Artificial Intelligence. At the moment there
are twelve employees. The laboratory is closely associated with
the Computer Science and Physics Departments in TCD and the
opportunity exists for all researchers in the laboratory to pursue a
higher degree by research.
RESEARCHER
At present there is a vacancy for a researcher in the area of
Automated Reasoning/Machine Learning. The successful candidate
will work on research issues concerned with software design using
AI techniques, such as Case Based Reasoning and others. The
candidate should have a good honours degree or a higher degree
in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline and some
experience in programming. Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence
techniques and research/work experience in this field will be an
advantage but is not considered essential.
The salary will be competitive and will depend on the
qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Call for Participation
The American Society for Information Science Special Interest Group on
Classification Research (ASIS SIG/CR) invites submissions for the 2nd ASIS '91
Classification Research (CR) Workshop, to be held at the 54th Annual Meeting of
ASIS in Washington, DC. The Workshop will take place Sunday, October 27th,
1991, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. ASIS '91 continues through Thursday, October 31.
The CR Workshop is designed to be an exchange of ideas among those engaged in
active research or practice in the creation, development, management,
representation, display, comparison, compatibility, theory, and application of
classification schemes. Emphasis will be on semantic classification, in
contrast to statistically-based schemes. Topics include, but are not limited
to:
- Warrant for concepts in classification schemes.
- Concept acquisition.
- Basis for semantic classes.
- Automated techniques to assist in creating classification schemes.
- Statistical techniques used for developing explicit, nonstatistically-based
semantic classes.
- Relations and their properties.
- Inheritance and subsumption.
- Knowledge representation schemes.
- Classification algorithms.
- Procedural knowledge in classification schemes.
- Reasoning with classification schemes.
- Software for managing classification schemes.
- Data structures and programming languages for classification schemes.
- Comparison and compatibility between classification schemes.
- Previously-named topics, highlighting specific applications such as subject
analysis, database navigation, information retrieval, natural language
understanding, expert systems, and image processing.
The CR Workshop welcomes submissions from various disciplines. Attendance will
be by invitation only. Those interested in participating are invited to submit
a short (1-2 page single-spaced) position paper, summarizing their substantive
work in the above areas or other areas related to semantic classification
schemes, and a statement briefly outlining the reason for wanting to
participate in the workshop. Submissions may include background papers as
attachments. Those selected as presenters will be invited to submit expanded
versions of their position papers and to speak to those papers in brief
presentations during the workshop. All position papers (both expanded and
short papers) will be published in proceedings to be distributed prior to the
workshop. The workshop registration fee is $30.00 per person, and includes a
copy of the proceedings and lunch and refreshments.

Call for Papers
This workshop (which follows the successful one held at Stanford
University in 1990) encourages intensive and high quality interaction
and cooperation among researchers with a diversity of artificial
intelligence approaches to diagnosis. Attendance will be limited
to fifty participants with presentations spread over three days.
Substantial time will be reserved for discussion.
To attend, participants should submit papers (maximum 5000
words) to be reviewed by the committee. Submissions are
welcomed on (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Theory of diagnosis (abductive vs. deductive diagnosis,
isolation vs. identification, diagnosis on non-monotonic
theories, diagnosis of dynamic systems,...)
- Computational issues (controlling the combinatorial explosion,
focusing strategies, controlling diagnostic reasoning of complex
systems, ...)
- Modeling for diagnosis (multiple, approximate, probabilistic and
qualitative models, integrating model-based diagnosis with
heuristics ....)
- Evaluation of theories on practical applications
- Inductive approaches to diagnosis (Case-Based Reasoning,
Neural Nets, ...)
Accepted papers can be revised for inclusion in the workshop
working notes. Although work published elsewhere is acceptable,
new original work is preferred.
Please send five copies of each submission to the chairman at
the postal address below. Include several ways of contacting the
principal author in addition to a postal address: electronic mail,
fax and telephone numbers are preferred, in that order. Please
indicate with your submission if you wish to make a
presentation or only to attend.
Submissions received after 3 May 1991 will not be considered.
The decisions of the committee will be mailed by 1 July 1991.
