Subject: MLC and AAAI submissions

What is the rule about submissions to the machine learning conference
and the AAAI conference?

1) Is it ok to publish the same paper in both conferences?
2) Is it ok to report the same results in two different papers
at both conferences? [This happened two years ago when
then submission times did not overlap].
3) Is it ok to submit the same paper to both conferences and
then, if it is accepted in both, withdraw it from one?

For fairness sake, we must have a rule that applies to all.

[Note: Tom Dietterich is co-chair of AAAI]
Simultaneous submission is permitted, but not simultaneous
publication.

By the way, the two program committees are hoping to coordinate
reviewers (i.e., the same paper may be reviewed by the same people for
both conferences), and hence, simultaneously submission isn't likely
to by advantageous to anyone. I think authors should choose their
audience (ie., a general AI audience vs. a more knowledgeable ML
audience) and submit to only one conference.

[Note: From AAAI Call for papers:
Papers that are also being submitted to other conferences, whether
verbatim or in essence, must have this fact clearly stated on the
title page. With the exception of workshops with a specialized focus,
papers that appear at other conferences must be withdrawn from
AAAI-90. Failure to meet any of the requirements above is grounds for
summary rejection, without refereeing.]

WORKSHOP ON CHANGE OF REPRESENTATION

Menlo Park, California, March 24-25, 1990

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

In recent years there has been a series of workshops on issues related
to automatic problem reformulation. The first was the ``Knowledge
Compilation'' workshop in September 1986. The second was the workshop
on ``Change of Representation and Inductive Bias'' in June 1988. Most
recently was the ``Representation Issues in Machine Learning''
workshop organized as a part of the 1989 Machine Learning Workshop.

The scope of the present workshop has been expanded to encourage
intensive interaction and cooperation among researchers with a
diversity of approaches to problem reformulation. It will include
selected presentations and discussions, including a key note address
by Saul Amarel.

Attendance is by invitation only and is limited. Interested parties
should send a research summary to be reviewed by the committee.
Submissions are welcomed in the areas of: - Techniques for automating
change of representation - Theoretical aspects of reformulation -
Shifting perspective in modeling

In addition to their research summary, participants who wish to
present should submit extended abstracts or short papers to be
reviewed by the committee. Abstracts should be limited to 3000 words.
This is a workshop: presentations do not have to be conference
quality, nor do they have to be on new work. Accepted papers can be
revised and expanded for compilation and distribution to the workshop
participants. Revised papers may be up to twenty pages in length.
The papers and research summaries will be distributed to all
participants. It is expected that selected papers, suitably revised,
will be published subsequently.

Please send submissions to the chairman at the address below. If
submitting by FAX, only one copy is needed; if submitting by mail
please send three copies. Please include several ways of contacting
the principal author: electronic mail addresses, telephone numbers,
and mail addresses are preferred, in that order. In case of multiple
authors, please indicate which authors wish to participate.

Submissions received after 15 JANUARY 1990 will not be considered.
The decisions of the committee will be mailed 8 FEBRUARY 1990; full
length papers are due 15 MARCH 1990.

Committee: Michael Lowry, Robert Holte, and others.

This workshop is sponsored, in part, by Price Waterhouse.

A hardcopy version of this call is available. To obtain a copy, please send
your address or Fax number to the chairman.

Subject: Job Posting -- GTE Labs

The Self-Improving Systems Department of GTE Laboratories Inc. has an
opening for a computer scientist to identify and develop applications
of the results of machine learning research.

GTE Labs is the 650-person corporate research center of GTE, a large
and diversified corporation, most of whose revenues are related to
telecommunications. The Self-Improving Systems Department is one of
five within the Computer and Intelligent Systems Laboratory. It
conducts fundamental research in machine learning, both symbolic and
connectionist, and is responsible for providing prototype learning
systems applicable to domains of importance to the parent company and
transferring those prototypes to business units within the company.
Present department members are Chuck Anderson, Kelly Bradford, Wendy
Chow, Judy Franklin, Bud Frawley, Glenn Iba, Oliver Selfridge, Bernard
Silver, Rich Sutton, and John Vittal (manager). Research is supported
by a computational environment of Symbolics and Sun workstations
networked to various shared-usage computers.

The person who fills this position will explore, in conjunction with
company business units, possible applications of machine learning
technologies to telecommunications and to manufacturing and will
participate in the development and transfer of domain-specific
applications.

An academic background focused on artificial intelligence and machine
learning is desirable. A master's degree in computer science or a
related field is required; a doctorate is preferred. At least three
years of research or development experience using AI languages in
advanced program development environments is preferred. Experience in
the use of traditional computer languages would also be helpful.

Interested parties should send resumes via U.S. mail to the
department's personnel representative at this address:

Ms. Vanessa Stern
GTE Laboratories
40 Sylvan Road
Waltham, MA 02254

Thanks for your time,
Bud Frawley

Note: Redistribution of ML-LIST
________
Redistribution of ML-LIST is strongly encouraged. Many sites receive
one copy that is redistributed internally. This reduces network
traffic, reduces the amount of time required to mail ML-LIST, and
frees the moderator from changing addresses from
user@godzilla.ustate.edu to user@mothra.ustate.edu. CMU, Illinios,
Irvine, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, etc. distribute it locally. Many
copies are mailed individually to Berkeley, MIT, NWU, GMU, GATECH...
