The Adventure Files, Part Two (Cedric Chin) MYTHOS

--------------------

From: Cedric Chin <cchin@frk.com>
Subject: The Adventure Files, Part Two
System: Mythos

** THE ADVENTURE FILES **
** PART TWO **
** THE CURIOUS PARCEL TO THE INTERESTING SHOP **

The Curious Parcel (+6/+2)
Limited Edition

Summary: Yeah, whatever.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC); or
Providence (LC); or Europe; or Middle East. Or, in the Dreamlands,
Ulthar (The West) and Mnar (The West).

Required Cards:
* TOME IN A NON-ENGLISH LANGUAGE: Any Tome in a non-English language;
possibly French.
* ONE SPELL: Any Spell.
* LIBRARY LOCATION: Any Library Location.
* CEMETARY LOCATION: Any Cemetary Location.
* GATE LOCATION: Any Gate Location.
* TWO ALLIES THAT ARE EITHER AUTHORS, SCHOLARS, PROFESSORS, OR
ARTISTS: Any such Allies.

Comments: French Tomes work fine with this Adventure, because they
have the lowest Sanity costs of the foreign-language Tomes, and have
the Skull-Icon, necessary for Seeking Everlasting Life I. This
Adventure is a little harder to play in the Dreamlands, because the
Waking World has more Professor Allies.

***

A Day in the Life of a Miskatonic University Student (+8/+2)
Limited Edition

Summary: Darn Reasonable.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC); and any
Country (LC).

Attributes: Tome

Requirements:
* THREE MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY LOCATIONS: Any three Miskatonic
University Locations, Arkham; include the Orne Library, with its
Tome attribute.
* SPELL WITH BARRIER, CIRCLE, SIGN, OR CHANT IN TITLE: Any such spell.
* MONSTER: Any Monster.
* COUNTRY SITE: Any Country Site.
* ALLY OF OPPOSITE SEX: Any male Ally.

Additional Cards:
* Female Investigator: For the male Ally.
* Tome: To play the spell.

Comments: A fourth Miskatonic University (Sciene Annex) is a Rare, and
a fifth Miskatonic University (Miskatonic Commons) is from the MSGS
set.

***

Doomed if You Do (+8/+3)
Dreamlands

Summary: Go for it! Summoning Bokrug is just too funny.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Dreamlands, Mnar (The West).

Attributes: Tome, Artifact (for Additional Cards)

Required Cards:
* LIVING DEAD ALLY: Taran-Ish, Mnar, Unique.
* THREE MNAR LOCATIONS: Ruins of Sarnath and Ruins of Ib to Summon
Bokrug. Other Mnar Locations.
* BEING OF IB: Being of Ib, Lesser Servitor, Monster.
* BOKRUG: Bokrug, GOO, Monster. Requires Storm and Ruins Location.
* TOME WITH DREAMLANDS SPELL: Book of Black Binding (English), Any
Dreamlands Tome in Glyphs.

Additional Cards:
* Ghost Being of Ib: Corrupt Cultist, Knows Glyphs, Mnar. Allows play
of Dreamlands Tome in Glyphs.
* Idol of Bokrug: Artifact. Optional. Keeps Bokrug in play.
* Shining Trapezohedron: Artifact. Allows easier play of Bokrug.
* Storm: Any Storm, Event. Allows play of Bokrug.
* Yithian Mental Contact: To prevent loss of conditions needed to play
Bokrug.
* Zebras: Zebra, Event. Hastens play of Country Locations.

Comments: Bokrug is one of the easier GOO's to get into play (if
you're in Mnar), and Bokrug allows you to gain Sanity while in Mnar!
Bwahahaha. The Living Dead Ally is Unique and may slow the deck,
however.

***

The Dunwich Horror (+15/+5)
Limited Edition

Summary: Go for it! The Unique cards in this Adventure guarantee you
won't finish it until your deck is nearly exhausted, but what the
heck.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World: Miskanotic University in
Arkham (LC); and Dunwich (LC).

Attributes: Tomes.

Requirements:
* TWO MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY: Any two Miskatonic University Locations,
including the Orne Library, Tome Attribute.
* TRAVEL BY LAND: Car, Travel by Land, Event.
* THREE DIFFERENT DUNWICH LOCATIONS:
- Whately Farmhouse, Tome attribute, Dunwich.
- Dunwich Locations with Gates, to play the Son of Yog-Sothoth.
* HENRY ARMITAGE: Henry Armitage, Steadfast Professor, Arkham.
* PROFESSOR: Any Arkham Professor, Arkham.
* SENTINEL HILL: Sentinel Hill, Dunwich.
* LAVINA WHATELY: Lavina Whately, Dunwich.
* OLD MAN WHATELY: Old Man Whately, Dunwich, Unique.
* WILBUR WHATELY: Wilbur Whately, Dunwich.
* SON OF YOG-SOTHOTH: Son of Yog-Sothoth, Greater Independent, Monster, Unique.
* FULL MOON: Full Moon, Night, Event.
* NECRONOMICON: Necronomicon, Greek or Latin, and English Editions, Tome.
* VOOLA RITUAL: Voola Ritual, Octopus-Icon Spell.

Additional Cards:
* Greek or Latin Investigator: This Investigator will help play the
Greek or Latin Necronomicon.

Comments: This Adventure has two Unique cards, so it's likely you will
draw your entire deck before scoring this Adventure. The Greek or
Latin editions of the Necronomicon are not essential, but they allow
you to draw an Additional Card each Round. The Science Annex, a
Miskatonic Location, is a Rare. The MSGS has the Miskatonic Commons,
an additional Miskatonic Location not available in the Limited
Edition.

Compatible Adventures:

* The Birds and the Byakhees (+6/+2): Okay fit.

* The Curious Parcel (+6/+2): Okay fit.

* The Even Stranger Case of Charles Fort (+6/+2): Okay fit. Not many
cards overlap, but the Even Stranger Case of Charles Fort's Events
are easy to play. Also, Squire Sawyer Whateley fits with the theme.

* The Great Menagerie (+6/+2): Okay fit. Add Laban Shrewsbery,
Etienne-Laurent de Marigny, ,a bunch of Monsters, and the Create
Gate, Eye-Icon Spell.

* Knee-Deep in Doom (+5/+2): Okay fit. "Travel by Air" Monsters are
useful to travel among the Locations needed for the Dunwich Horror,
and 197 E. Pickman is a reusable gate, located in Arkham.

* On the Edge (+6/+4): Okay fit. Instead of the cards listed in the On
the Edge entry, add Dr. Allen Halsey as the Doctor, and the various
Whateleys as the Corrupt Cultists for On the Edge.

* Seeking Everlasting Life I (+5/+2): Best fit. High card overlap.

* The Theron Marks Society (+6/+2): Okay fit. The Whateley's Remote
Farmhouse (fits the theme) fulfills the Theron Marks Society's
Country Hourse requirement.

***

The Even Stranger Case of Charles Fort (+6/+2)
Dreamlands

Summary: Yeah, whatever. Some timing is required.

with MSGS (LC); and and Country. Or, in the Dreamlands, Celephais (the
East); and Ilek-Vad (the East).

Station, New York, MSGS.

Required Cards (Dreamlands):

card in play.
* SWARM OF INSECTS: Swarm of Insects, Night, Event.

* STRANGE HUMANOID ENCOUNTER: Strange Humanoid Encounter,
Event. Requires a Night card in play.
* COUNTRY: Any such card, Ilek-Vad.
* PORT or STATION: Harbor, Celephais.

Additional Cards:
* Storm: Any such card.

Comments: This Adventure is pretty fun with the Son of Yog-Sothoth
Adventure.

***

The Expedition (+11/+3)
Limited Edition

Summary: Darn Reasonable. The entire Adventure has only two Locations,
both Arkham City. Lots of Events make this Adventure easy to play.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC). May be used
in a Waking World / Dreamlands deck.

Attributes: Gates, Tome

Requirements:
* MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY: Orne Library, Tome Attribute, City, Arkham.
* TWO ALLIES: Two Arkham Allies.
* TRAVEL BY SEA: Tramp Steamer, which can travel within a region.
* STORM: Any Storm. Storms will also remove Drought, which prevents
play of Travel by Sea.
* UNEXPECTED CALAMITY: Unexpected Calamity, Event.
* AMNESIA: Amnesia, Event.
* SITE: Hangman's Hill, Site, City, Arkham.
* TOME: Any Tome.
* THREE MONSTERS: Living Dead, or Monsters plus Giant Albino Penguins.

Comments: The THREE MONSTERS means you will have six Monsters in your
deck, so that you can play the Adventure mid-way through your draw
pile. Therefore, you should use six Monsters that Join, either Living
Dead, or any Monsters plus Giant Albino Penguins.

***

Four-Armed is Forewarned (+5/+2)
Dreamlands

Summary: Yeah, whatever.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Dreamlands, Underworld; and any
subregion with a site.

Attributes: Artifact.

Required Cards:
* WEAPON: Any Weapon.
* EXPLORER: Iranon the Explorer, Any Site.
* TWO DIFFERENT UNDERWORLD LOCATIONS: Any such Locations.
* GUG: Gug, Lesser Independent, Monster.
* PHOBIA: Any Phobia.

Comments: The Underworld itself is not a Region that you can base a
whole deck upon.

***

The Gathering (+7/+2)
Dreamlands

Summary: Go for it! Multiple Locations make playing this Adventure
slow.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Dreamlands, any Country Locations,
preferably Mnar, Ulthar and the Oukranos Wilds (all in the West).

Attributes: Artifact

Required Cards:
* CHIEF: Cat Chieftan, Ulthar, and Zoog Chieftan, Oukrandos Wilds.
* PRIEST: Atal, Ulthar, and Nasht & Kaman-Thah, Any Temple.
* MERCHANT: Wandering Merchant, Any Country, and the Merchant of Ill
Repute, Dylath-leen.
* DREAMER: HP Lovecraft, Any Dreamlands, and Randolph Carter, Any Country.
* THREE LOCATIONS IN DIFFERENT CITIES, TOWNS, OR VILLAGES: Ilarnek,
Mnar; Ulthar; Dylath-Leen.
* WEAPON: Any Weapon, Artifact.
* ACCOUTERMENTS OF HEROES: Accouterments of Heroes, Artifact.
* CHURCH OR TEMPLE: Any West Dreamlands Temples.

Additional Cards:
* Great Library: (Optional) Ulthar and Dylath-Leen.
* Yithian Mental Contact: Event. To prevent Typhoid from burying your
Allies.
* Zebras/Cars: Travel by Land. To travel among the three subregions.

Comment: This Adventure can be played in the Waking World in a South
Pacific (for the Chief) / Middle East (for the Merchant) deck, but you
wouldn't want to.

***

The Great Epidemic (+6/+2)
Limited Edition

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC). May be used
in a Waking World / Dreamlands deck.

Summary: Darn Reasonable. Many of the cards are Events, and thus easy
to play.

Attributes: Gates

Requirements:
* DOCTOR: Doctor Allen Halsey, Doctor and Scholar, Arkham.
* THREE DAYS: Any Day, Event.
* TYPHOID EPIDEMIC: Typhoid, Epidemic, Event.
* HERBERT WEST: Herbest West, Corrupt Student, Arkham, Unique.
* DOCTOR (in Story Deck): duplicate Allen Halsey.
* ZOMBIE: Zombie, Living Dead, Monster.
* SANITARIUM: Arkham Asylum, Location, Unique, plus another Sanitarium.

Additional Cards:
* Call Power of Nyambe: This spell places the Doctor in your Story
Deck, if other players won't kill him off for you.
* Monophobia: This Phobia works well with Typhoid Epidemic.

Comments: The Chaosium site clarifies that the Doctor in your Story
Deck is not the same Doctor as the one first mention in the Adventure.
However, that means you would need four of the same Doctor in your
deck, which isn't easy to collect.

In play, we found it difficult to put the Zombie in the Story Deck
(since it returns to the Threat when any Ally is lost in any Combat),
so put four into the Deck, or use the Command the Dead spell to put it
into play during the Round. (Placing four Zombie in your deck
increases the likelihood that there will be two Zombies in your
Threat, and one will be buried while the other stays in play.)

Wish List: More Doctors in Arkham.

***

The Great Menagerie (+6/+2)
Dreamlands

Summary: Go for it!

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC); or another
subregion. Or, in the Dreamlands, various subregions.

Required Cards, Dreamlands:
* ADVENTURER OR EXPLORER: Iranon, Any Country; and The Hunter, Any
Country.
* THREE DIFFERENT OUTSIDE LOCATIONS: Any such Locations.
* FOUR MONSTERS OF DIFFERENT SUBTYPES: Any such Monsters, including
Travel by Air Monsters, Buopoth (Joins any Monster), and GOOs.
* CITY LOCATION: Any such Location.

Required Cards, Lovecraft Country, Arkham:
* ADVENTURE OR EXPLORER: Etienne Laurent de Marigny, Any City;
Shrewsbury, Arkham, MSGS.
* THREE DIFFERENT OUTSIDE LOCATIONS: Boston & Maine Train Station,
MSGS; Christchurch Cemetary; Hangman's Hill; MU Commons, MSGS; Old
Arkham Cemetary; Potter's Field
* FOUR MONSTERS OF DIFFERENT SUBTYPES: Any such Monsters, including
Giant Albino Peguins (Joins any Monster).
* CITY LOCATION: Any City, Arkham; especially 197 E. Pickman, with its
reusable Gate.

Required Cards, Middle East:
* ADVENTURE OR EXPLORER: T.E. Lawrence.
* THREE DIFFERENT OUTSIDE LOCATIONS: The Muski and Tree of Sayede
Mandura in Cairo; Grivas Old and New Books in Alexandria; The Sphinx
and Valley of the Kings out in the Country.
* FOUR MONSTERS OF DIFFERENT SUBTYPES: Any such Monsters, including
Giant Albino Peguins (Joins any Monster).
* CITY LOCATION: Any City, Cairo.

Comments: Unfortunately, compared to The Interesting Shop, the extra
point isn't worth it in a deck in a City subregion. Getting out four
subtypes of Monsters isn't easy!

Wish List: Add another point to make this card more attractive to play
in the Waking World.

***

The Hero's Journey (+7/+2)
Dreamlands

Summary: Darn Reasonable. This Adventure is sorta easy, but requires
The Gathering, which takes awhile.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Dreamlands, the Underworld; and the
West.

Attributes: Gate, Outside (for Nyarlathotep), Artifact (from The
Gathering)

Required Cards:
* THE GATHERING: The Gathering, Adventure.
* TWO TRAVEL EVENTS: Sky Galleon, to travel from The Gathering
subregions (the West); and Zebras, to travel among The Gathering
subregions (the West).
* UNDERWORLD: Tower of Koth, City, to qualify as a City for The
Gathering; and Any Underworld with an Outside and Gate Attribute, to
summon Nyarlathotep.
* NON-UNDERWORLD LOCATION: Any West subregion, satisfying the THREE
LOCATIONS requirement for The Gathering.
* GOO OR OUTER GOD: Nyarlathotep, to use with the Day requirement
* DAY: New Moon, to use with the GOO requirement.

Additional Cards:
* Shining Trapezohedron: Artifact, to help summon Nyarlathotep.

Comments: The Adventure is pretty easy by itself, since, for 7 points,
you only need to travel to an additional location, and summon a GOO
which isn't too hard to summon.

***

A Heroic Rescue (+7/+3)
Limited Edition

Summary: Yeah, whatever. Remember not to bury your Allies until you're
on you last Adventure.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, Arkham (LC); and
Providence with MSGS (LC).

Attributes: Artifact, Tome

Requirements:
* STEADFAST AUTHOR: HP Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe, Ally, Providence.
* REPORTER: Harvey Walters, Ally, Arkham, and Arthur Monroe, Any City.
* DOCTOR: Allen Halsey, Arkham, and Marinus Bicknell Willett, Ally,
Providence.
* PRIVATE EYE: KJ Hooper, Ally, Arkham.
* WIFE: Asenath Waite Derby, Ally, Arkham, and Rhoby Harris,
Providence.
* CORRUPT CULTIST: Dr. Allen and Gomes, Ally, Providence (MSGS).
* CEMETARY: Any Arkham or Providence Cemetary.
* WEAPON: Any Weapon.
* TOME: Any Diamond-Icon Tome, if you have the Keeness Alike Spell,
which can be used to play Allies during Combat.

Additional Cards:
* Yithian Mental Contact: Event. Cancels effect of Typhoid, which will
bury half of your Allies.

Comment: Keep the Allies alive until your last Adventure. By keeping
your Allies out of the deck, you will have less cards to cycle.

***

If I Ran the Zoog (+13/+3)
Dreamlands

Summary: Are you kidding?!? The Adventure's three Dreamlands Regions
make it a difficult card to play. None of the Locations required by
the Adventure have the Gate Attribute, which is helpful to play the
three Monsters needed in the Adventure.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Dreamlands, Ilek-Vad (The East); and Mnar
(The West); and Vale of Pnoth (Underworld).

Attributes: Gate, Tome would be useful.

Requirements:
* YAK: Yak, Travel by Land, Event.
* TRAVEL: Cloud Ship, Travel by Air, Event; to travel among Regions.
* STAR: Aldeberan Moves in the Sky; to remove Storms preventing play
of Travel by cards.
* OPAL THRONE: Opal Throne, Ilek-Vad, the East.
* KING: King of Ilek-Vad, Steadfast King, requires Randolph Carter in
play, Ilek-Vad, the East.
* VOONITH: Voonith, Lesser Independent, Monster.
* VALE OF PNOTH: Value of Pnoth, Gate, Underground.
* BUOPOTH: Buopoth, Lesser Independent, Monster.
* GUG: Gug, Lesser Independent, Monster.
* TEMPLE OF BOKRUG: Temple of Bokrug, Temple, Mnar, Unique.
* ANGRY ZOOGS: Angry Zoogs, Dreamlands, Event.

Additional Cards:
* Flee to Special Room: Event. This Event saves Randolph Carter from
burial.
* Ilek-Vad Country Locations: These Locations will allow play of
Randolph Carter and the King of Ilek-Vad on consecutive turns.
* Randolph Carter: Steadfast Ally, Any Country. This card is
necessary to play the King of Ilek-Vad.
* Various Gate Locations: Allow play of Monsters.
* Zebras: Travel by Land, Dreamlands Event. Zebras improve travel
among Country Locations.

Comments: If paired with an Adventure requiring Tomes, use Angles of
Tagh-Clatur, an Eye Icon spell, to summon Monsters that allow
immediate Travel by Air; and Create Gate, an Eye Icon Spell, to put
the Adventure Monsters into your Threat. Since all the Monsters are
Lesser Independents, you can summon them with the Circles of Thaol
(Wave-Icon Spell), and Dust of Suleiman (Diamond-Icon Spell, from
MSGS).

***

The Interesting Shop (+5/+1)
Limited Edition

Summary: Yeah, whatever. Toss this in any City deck you
create. Dreamland subregions do not have as many Locations with the
Artifact or Tome Attribute as Waking World Cities do.

Dimensions and Regions: In the Waking World, any city. In the
Dreamlands, any city (The East).

Required Cards:
* FOUR DIFFERENT CITY LOCATIONS WITH THE ARTIFACT OR TOME ATTRIBUTE:
Any such Location.
* A TOME OR ARTIFACT: Any such Artifact or Tome.
* ANY THING WITH A SANITY COST OF AT LEAST ONE: Any such Artifact or
Tome.

Comments: Interestingly, Ulthar doesn't work well with this Adventure.
