Subject: DEVO executable and sources available

Devo.exe is now available through ftp.cognet.ucla.edu
under /alife/public/DEVO/devo.exe. Remember, it's a DOS 3.3 program
for AT-VGA.

Source code is also available in the DEVO directory. It compiles
using Microsoft Quick-C. If you are using some other compiler, then
you will need to find and replace the routines which change the video
mode and do the in/out bytes to the i/o ports.

Please remember that it was written at home for fun, and so if you
have any problems with the comments (or lack thereof), you'll have to find
someone else to whine at. :) Unfortunately, I have to work for a living
and don't have the time available to answer a lot of questions.

If anyone is interested in expanding upon this program, or would
wish me to do so (with funding) please feel free to contact me! I enjoyed
writing this, and would enjoy it once again...

Comments welcome, send to rclark@tis.com

Oh yes, just hit the <escape> key for a help menu. Sorry, no
documentation currently available. Maybe later.

Thanks,

Richard H. Clark
rclark@tis.com

[Note from Digest moderator: DEVO is a program that enables you to
create artificial organisms composed of a variety of cell types, and
simulate various aspects of the struggle for survival. See Digest #77
for more details.]

Cultural Diversity in the Global Village?'. A-Lifers are encouraged
to participate in TISEA - we are working to ensure a high
representation of A-Life, CA, A-Evolution and other emergent behaviour
projects. While deadlines for Workshops,Courses, Papers and Panels
have passed, submissions are invited for the Electronic Theatre,
Poster Sessions, Video-papers and Software exhibition. Contact TISEA

will present an evening titles exploring innovative computer animation,
documents of artists and research projects and recent advances in scientific
visualisation. All standard video formats and 16 mm film may be submitted.
The screening will be presented in a modern 300-seat, raked cinema. In
addition to this theatrical program an open access video facility will be
available to delegates.

Upon notification of selection, participants are responsible for forwarding an
exhibition copy of the selected work to TISEA by 1 October. 3/4" U-matic tape
is preferred for exhibition.

POSTER SESSIONS :
provide an exciting opportunity for individuals to present up-to-the-minute
talks about their various areas of research and endeavour . Venues will be
equipped with basic a/v equipment - TISEA will make all efforts to accommodate
special equipment requirements given enough advance notice. Proposals which
don't fit into the traditional panel/paper format are accommodated in this
forum. Video Posters are also encouraged.Sessions will be parallel, and of up
to 45 minutes duration.

How to submit
Send 3 copies of your proposal to the Poster Sessions Chair.
It must include:
1. Title of the presentation
2. A 200 word abstract for catalogue inclusion.
3. 3 slides of your work, properly labelled (if applicable)
4. Selected curriculum vitae
5. Selected supporting material

SOFTWARE EXHIBITION:
TISEA will be providing a demonstration room for independent and
small-scale-commercial software . A range of platforms will be made available
dependent upon demand, access and sponsorship. Forward disks to TISEA, PO Box
A307, Sydney South NSW 2000 Australia

BIOCOMPUTATION WORKSHOP
Evolution as a computational process
June 22-24, 1992
Doubletree Hotel
2 Portola Plaza
Monterey, Ca 93940

Sponsored by the Institute for Scientific Computing Research at LLNL and
the Center for Computational Engineering at SNL

This workshop brings together biologists, physicists and computer
scientists with interests in the study of evolution. The premisis
of the workshop is that natural evolution is computational process
of adaptation to an ever changing environment. Mathematical theory and
computer modeling are therefore ideally suited to study evolution
and conversely, evolution may be used as a model system to study the
computational processes of optimization and emergent pattern formation.

Fifteen invited speakers will provide general reviews and summaries of their
recent research. Although oral presentations will be limited to the invited
speakers, original research contributions are solicited for poster sessions
in the following areas:

natural evolution
artificial life
genetic algorithms and optimization

List of speakers:
