Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Happy Leap-Day! We hope you got a chance to enjoy your extra day this
year in a special way. Here in Southern Wisconsin, the day was warm,
sunny and felt much like spring. Winter is waning. It was a good day
to go birdwatching, and to finish work on this issue.
Speaking of waning, our first story has to make Amigans wonder if
Amiga Inc. isn't waning. The court battle with Genesi was no battle at
all - Amiga didn't show up. No lawyer, no contest, no chance to win.
Was this because they couldn't afford to fight? Or didn't they care
about this case? After all, it's only a port of DE. If they didn't
care, then why force it to trial at all? Maybe they thought Genesi was
bluffing, or hoped to make them spend some money on legal fees.
Many questions, and no answers at this point. If any answers do come
our way, we'll pass them along.
Meanwhile, there are a lot more cheeful stories in this issue. We
hope you enjoy them.
Brad Webb,
Editor

On the 20th of this month, Amiga Inc. lost a court case to plaintiff
Thendic (Genesi). The civil case dealt with a contract which Genesi
claimed required Amiga DE to be ported to the Pegasos.
Amiga lost the case by not engaging legal counsel and was therefore
unrepresented. This automatically gave the ruling in favor of Genesi.
Amiga has 30 days to appeal.
"Amiga Update" is not aware of any statement from Amiga Inc.
regarding this case, nor of any plans to appeal (or not appeal).
Shortly after the ruling was handed down, the following statement was
issued by Hyperion:
The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to point out that
Hyperion Entertainment and Eyetech between them hold an exclusive
license to the Amiga trademarks, the AmigaOS 3.1 source-code and
associated intellectual property.
The outcome of the litigation between Genesi and Amiga will not
affect these rights in any way and Hyperion Entertainment will take
whatever action it deems appropriate to enforce its rights and
intellectual property.

Special thanks to Newtek Incorporated (including but not limited to
Paul Lara & Tim Jenison), Bill Evans and Aaron "Aarexx" Ruscetta.
Born from the mind of Tim Jenison and several other high tech brains
at Newtek Incorporated in Topeka Kansas in 1991. The Amiga Video
Toaster launched an entire industry with its power to the people price
and feature set. Replacing $250,000 of broadcast quality television
studio equipment the Amiga Video Toaster allowed anyone that could
afford to buy a car get into video production. Newtek did it again
when they added tapeless editing hardware to the Toaster in 1994, The
Flyer. The Desktop Video industry started with the Amiga Video Toaster
and now Newtek in a awesome gesture to Amiga enthusiasts is allowing
the source code to this amazing product to be released so it can be
tinkered with and upgraded by the community. The worlds first video
production system in a box now becomes the worlds first open source
real time video editing system for your Amiga computer workstation.

tools of all time! e-mail: ovt AT discreetfx DOT com

{We have no idea if this product will be available for the Amiga or
not, but thought you should be warned about - er, aware of - it
anyway. Brad.}
Internet users in Britain may soon be able to spice up their emails
with a whiff of a well-chosen scent.
A British internet service provider plans to market a "scent dome",
which would plug into computers much like a printer.
Inside the device would be 20 disposable pockets of different scents,
which could be combined to make up to 60 different smells.
These would be released by electronic signals sent along a broadband
internet line.
As well as garnishing emails to loved ones with a burst of a
favourite perfume, users could also be alerted to incoming mail by the
waft of baking bread or coffee.
Telewest Broadband, the company involved, is testing the scent pods
and hopes to make them available for around £200.

The Latest version of makecdromds.module also fixes Various problems
over previous version v45.11 You may download the latest version by
clicking Here
microgolded
It is a low cost variant of GoldED AIX, designed for basic editing
tasks. The editor is released in form of a single executable, for
placement in the system's c folder. microgolded is the ideal editor
for the boot CD of your OS because it does not need to be installed:
it does not need an assign, catalogs, custom libraries etc. It will
run even if the AmigaOS startup-sequence is not functional.
microgolded is only available online for instant download (pay
securely via paypal).

DiscreetFX GameShop
DiscreetFX GameShop allows Amiga/Amiga OS 4.0/MorphOS & AROS game
developers to focus on what they're good at, developing a great game.
Game Shop takes care of everything else, free web hosting, marketing,
promotion, packaging and shipping. Free toll free number for sales and
support, free downloads of demo versions of the game and works in
progress from the GameShop web site.
In these sometimes troubled economic times GameShop fulfills a much
needed requirement in this small but regrowing community. It gives
new, small, resource hungry game developers a place to publish and
host their games. Not all games that are submitted will make the cut
but the ones that make it will have a lot less to worry about and can
focus on making the best game possible. In the past the Amiga launched
the careers of many great game developers. Bullfrog, Core Design & EA
just to name a few. With GameShop we hope to spark some new careers
for new game developers.
Today's game industry is rift with old worn out ideas that have be
rehashed time and time again, have you played too many FPS or RTS
games? With GameShop we are hoping to nurture new game developers with
fresh ideas for the gaming industry. Now being broke does not mean
your great game idea will not be published.
2004 should be a banner year for Amiga & Amiga compatible systems.
All those new customers will need relaxing and entertaining games on
their systems. And new game authors need free web hosting and low cost
no nonsense publishing terms to get their titles available to that
user base.
Would you like your game published through the Game Shop? Here are
the steps you need to take.
1. Contact us at gameshop AT discreetfx DOT com.
2. Be ready to provided details about your game including screen
shots, demo versions, development track record and or story boards.
3. Sign the easy to read, legalize free DiscreetFX contract.
4. Submit all graphics, HTML, demos Etc. that you want published on
GameShop to DiscreetFX.
5. Get back to what counts the most, finishing the development of
your new game.
Please contact me if you need further information or have questions.

AmiZilla Shop now open
DiscreetFX is always striving to find more ways to raise funds for
the AmiZilla Project. We wish to motivate programmers to spend more
time working on this contest so that Amiga/MorphOS/AROS users can also
enjoy the rich browsing experience of the Mozilla/FireFox platform as
soon as possible. Other Operating systems have enjoyed
Netscape/Mozilla for years, even the ill fated BeOS. Amiga API based
systems should no longer be missing out on this great application.
Programming of course takes time, effort and hard work. Porting
Mozilla/FireFox is of course a difficult but reachable goal. Some
members of the community have been hoping for rapid progress for
AmiZilla.
But for a team of programmers to be interested in spending more time
on the project the incentive must be higher. So today we are opening
the AmiZilla Shop, here your able to buy in stock AmiZilla merchandise
and have it shipped within 1-3 days. All proceeds minus manufacturing
go to the AmiZilla Booty which has almost 100 members including a
former Netscape Executive. Enjoy your AmiZilla products now and help
build an even higher contest winning for the AmiZilla programmers. Use
your AmiZilla products proudly and have yourself added to a growing
list of AmiZilla supports. AmiZilla, with your efforts will succeed
and help grow the respect for Amiga/MorphOS/AROS and increase the user
base beyond its current levels.
There may be no future for Amiga type systems without a standard web
browser platform like Mozilla/FireFox. We have built a online store
for your shopping pleasure with a wide variety of products. Even if
you can only afford to buy a $5 sticker every little bit helps
AmiZilla. Or if you're more adventurous maybe a AmiZilla thong for
your girlfriend or a nice sweater will be more to your liking.

Georg Hoermann has made the final release of his Virus Checker,
VirusZ III available. For the first time in six years of development,
his program has shed it's beta tag.
New in VirusZ III v1.00:
Improved 'Snapshot' function of the vectorcheck, it now saves the
information supplied by SegTracker. So please install SegTracker
before doing snapshots, it helps me a lot!
Finally fixed VirusZ 100% for MorphOS/Pegasos systems:
a) The vector check now handles function calls using EmulLibEntry
correctly and calculates "ROM" locations and sizes in the most
compatible way by scanning system romtags and afterwards calling
NewGetSystemAttrsA().
The memory monitor has been fixed for fake chipmem on Pegasos and
supports MorphOS "ROM" areas too. There's just one problem left with
pre-50.58 exec.library: size of A-Box modules cannot be calculated
perfectly here and will simply be set to 0x700000. This means that you
might be able to access non-existing memory areas at addresses near
0x10800000! This is on your own risk...
The internal doslist scanner (for sector check/bootblock lab) works
without MEMF_24BITDMA memory now which was never available on MorphOS
systems. The code for 64-bit access (>4GB) has been bug fixed and
enhanced to support TD_READ64/TD_WRITE64 too.
Rewritten startup code to use EasyRequestArgs() in case of an error
instead of DisplayAlert() which is not available in current MorphOS
versions. Thanks to Harry Sintonen for all his help with MorphOS
topics and for beta-testing! And thanks to Alexey Ivanov, Ilkka
Lehtoranta and 'Vinny' for beta-testing too.
Fixed problems in sector check concerning 4GB-border. Added some
recalculation routines for strange values in de_BlocksPerTrack.
Additionally de_MaxTransfer is supported now for older HDs.
Removed the 'Use/Ignore External Xad-Slaves' selection from the file
check prefs. This was obsolete as xadmaster.library always requires
external clients to do a good job.
Finally added support for disk archives and disk images to the file
check. Please note that xadmaster.library v8+ is required! Now you can
extract all types of archives that XAD supports, and if they contain
disk images with valid files inside, these files will be checked too.
Two new options therefore have been added to the file check prefs:
"Extract Disk Archives" and "Check Files Inside Disk Images". Please
read the docs for more information! Thanks to Dirk Stöcker for
beta-testing and his helping hand concerning tricky XAD stuff.
Added extra check for bootblock viruses to sector and file check (for
files larger than 2048 bytes, usually diskimages).
Added sector checking for files! You can select 3 different modes in
the filecheck prefs, please read the docs carefully for further
information...
Added 'Scan Files For Bootblocks' to the file check prefs. With this
option enabled, VirusZ scans for bootblock viruses inside files.
Useful to detect unknown bb-virus installers.
Changed/enhanced functionality of the 'Job Monitor':
'Pause'/'Continue' gadgets have been replaced by a single cycle
gadget to stop/run the current job. b) 'Quit' gadget is always active
now (requested by many users).
All running/waiting jobs will be displayed in the report list now so
you get a better overview. You can select any of them and kill them
with the 'Kill Job' gadget. Useful if you accidentally have selected
some wrong files/disks.
Added 'Check Files...' gadget. It obviously does the same as the
equally named menu item of VirusZ's main window, but you won't have to
switch windows any more.
Added 'One/All' cycle gadget between 'Disinfect' and 'Delete' as it
determines the behaviour of both functions. If 'One' is selected,
everything works like in previous versions. By selecting 'All', the
delete function will delete all malicious files that have been found
so far. 'Disinfect' first determines the type of the selected item
(infected file or sector?) and will then start disinfecting either all
files or all sectors of the selected disk. Requested by 'Underground
God', hope you are happy now :)
Bumped version of VirusZ III to 1.00 !!! After 6(!) years of often
little development and much more lack of time VirusZ III finally has
reached full functionality...
You can find this release on the Virus Help Denmark or mirror sites.

SimpleMail is a new mailer for the Amiga classic platform but it is
intended to be as portable as possible so there speaks nothing against
a MorphOS or even Windows version.
In the current state, SimpleMail is an alpha version but it is very
stable however as we try to implement every feature so that it works
and go then on to the next one. However, SimpleMail grows very fast
and with your help it can overgrow YAM soon.
You will always find the latest versions (which are not necessarily
placed in the AMINET) here. Here is also a FAQ, please read it
carefuly!
If you have any questions or bugs then send them to the
user-mailinglist please, whose URL you'll find in the links. Bug
reports should submitted to the Bug Tracking system. But if you have
encouragements so send them to one of the main developers. You can
find our e-mail addresses in contact.

Introduction
============
This program is meant to be configured as picture viewer in directory
tools like DirOpus or DosControl. It shows the doubleclicked picture
in a borderless window on the specified custom screen. The remarkable
about this program is that it reads the whole directory the picture is
in and you can then choose other pictures out of this directory from a
menu or by pressing the cursor keys.
PicShow can also be used as a simple slide show program. It can
display pictures either in sort order or randomly. When run on its own
screen there are also some nice blend effects.
Get the latest beta version from http://picshow.ch.to
New since Version 1.21:
- choose whether the zoom factor should be kept for the next picture
or not
- option to let the ppc do the scaling, even with interpolation
disabled
- key definitions allow parameters
- record and save key definitions
- save pictures as jpeg (needs jpeg.library)
- new option: if directory contains no pictures the file requester
can be shown
- cut & paste support
- print support
- pictures are preloaded.
- picture can be saved as Workbench wallpaper.
- directories can be read recursively.
- lots of improvements I don't remember.
