Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Interesting things going on in the Amiga community this month. While
there was not much news generated, what news there is, is very
important. Most exciting is the demonstration of a native OS4 running
on an AmigaOne, even if this is a version not quite ready for users.
It's still a very important milestone.
Along similar lines, the "leaks" of work on an "Amiga Lite" that can
be used in embeded systems and, presumably, entry level desktops is
also of great interest. We have "snippets" of information on each
topic for you below. Short stories, but very significant in their
implications. In a month of little news, these stand out as shining
beacons perhaps showing the way toward the future. We hope so.
We also hope you enjoy this issue.

Hi Brad,

A few quotes from you from the new issue of AmigaUpdate, and some
responses:

[...]
> I was pleasantly surprised how many people
> expressed similar thoughts. Many also stated they were keeping their
> thoughts to themselves in order to avoid flame wars, etc. Very
> interesting.
[...]
> As for the trashing, it's become an Amiga Community Standard Practice
> to flame those you don't agree with. I actually found it amusing. Ad
> hominems are simply the least gracious way to admit you've been found
> out as having no valid argument.

I was amused by your first AmigaOS vs. MorphOS editorial, partly because
of the criticisms that I expected would result, and partly because it's
been rare for those running Amiga web sites, newsletters, magazines, etc.
to voice such a strong opinion one way or the other. I happen to agree
with you 100%, but question what good your editorials serve vs. "keeping
[your] thoughts to yourself"
. Maybe it was a natural reaction to the
amiga.org webmasters who vocally switched to the MorphOS side...or
perhaps you finally dealt with one MorphOS/AROS troll too many? ;-)
Although it was a simple opinion piece without vulgarities, I still
consider it a form of "trashing" and would prefer that the various OS's
be allowed to speak for themselves. When OS4 is released for the
AmigaOne, I fully expect the surrounding publicity to put it firmly in
"first place". Currently with OS4 still unreleased, AmigaOS, MorphOS,
and AROS have an odd, almost equal footing in the news. Also, with most
of the Amiga programming talent affiliated with at least one of these
efforts, we AmigaOS 3.x masses are left milling around, often without
much to do or say, and occasionally at the mercy of those who would take
the OS in their own favorite direction. Again, I expect a shakeup once
OS4 finally goes public. Until then I'm going to keep my thoughts to
myself...excluding this email, and on occasions when I just can't take
the trolls anymore. ;-)

Cheers,
xxxxx

~~~~~~
I have not included even the first name of this writer due to the
remarks about keeping his/her thoughts to himself/herself.
When you write to us, if you do not want your letter used at all,
please let us know, and it will not be published in any form. This
note did not include such a request, so we have included it, with no
indication of a name, due to the interesting and insightful thoughts
presented.
In the best of all possible worlds, the various OSs could just be
allowed to speak for themselves. Unfortunately, this is not the best
of all possible worlds.
It is indeed rare for an Amiga publication to make such a strong
statement. It is exceptionally rare for this publication to do so as
we have a strong desire to work to strengthen the Amiga community and
never weaken it.
For us to make such a statement, then, could only be due to
extraordinary circumstances. I believe most readers realize that.
Please keep that in mind when you read our last story this issue.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I believe you are quite correct
on what will happen once the production OS4 is available.
Brad
20-Sep-2003
While checking Amiga websites this month, we found the following
small but oh-so-significant item. It comes from the excellent
www.amigaworld.net site. To the best of our knowledge, this is the
first demonstration of Amiga OS4 running in native mode on an AmigaOne
computer. This is a major step forward toward our next generation
Amiga.
Though this was somne time ago now, we still haven't seen any reports
on how the demo was received. We also understand it was a still rather
early version of the OS. That doesn't detract from the importance.
We'll keep our eyes open for more information. Brad.
AmigaOne News : Alan Redhouse Comments on AmigaWorld about the A1-SE
Lite
20-Sep-2003
TA magazine issue 15. To quote myself (because its easier than
typing) :
Quote:
AmigaOne Lite - some more details.
In the last edition of Total Amiga I gave a brief overview of the
AmigaOne Lite - an entry level AmigaOne designed to both as a
CD32/A1200 successor and for use in embedded systems such as kiosks,
STB's etc. However the more observant of you will have realised that
in the last issue I actually described the AmigaOne-SE Lite - so why
the change of name?
In the interim period we have re-examined the costs and decided that
it is economically feasible to significantly increase the A1-Lite's
specification and flexibility within the same overall target pricing.
As one of these changes is to use the standard A1XE CPU modules (plus
a new entry-level 750CXe module) we dropped the `SE' from its name.
The full specifications for the AmigaOne Lite are as follows:
Micro ITX form factor (170mmx170mm)
Gigabit and 10/100 ethernet on board
133MHz UDMA RAID IDE controller
USB 2.0 on board
IEEE 1394 (`FireWire') on board
2x AGP graphics on board with PAL/NTSC TV out
AC97 sound on board
1 x PCI33MHz slot (horizontal, via supplied riser card)
Cardbus slot for flash card support (diskless booting, applications,
games slot etc)
Usual legacy PS/2, serial, parallel ports
Being a standard form factor it will fit in a standard micro ITX
case, such as the one shown in the enclosed photograph. Please visit
the web link at http://www.morex.com.tw/minicase.htm and
www.mini-itx.com to see other suitable case designs.
We are aiming to bring the AmigaOne Lite to market early next year.
-----
Not mentioned in the above spec is that the board is now designed to
take the standard A1XE megarray cpu module so that it can be supplied
with/upgraded to anything from an entry level (=cheap) 750CXe@433 to
(possibly) a 1.3GHz G4.
The pictures published on the Soft3 website are of the first
pre-prototype version - there will be 2 or 3 revisions before the
actual production version is ready. The first step - this board - is
basically to shrink the A1XE board to a mini-ITX formfactor and make
sure it works properly. Then the other chipsets and connectors will be
added and that series of boards use for developers to port OS &
applications. It will also be used to demonstrate capability - and
hopefully gain some significant orders - in the industrial markets
that we and other dealers are targetting (display controllers, kiosks,
etc).
Finally we hope the final version (which will be as near as possible
to the above spec) will be available for sale in the specialist shops
(and ultimately in the high street electronic entertainment chains) -
with OS4 and some Amiga applications - in 1Q04.
The pre-production pictures were intended to be shown - at this stage
- only to the A1 developers and to the A1-users list on AmigaWorld to
try to get some useful feedback. Thats why there was really no
explanation available to the world at largel when Soft3 (due to a
misunderstanding) put them up on their own website.
However, from what I can see the, open publication of these pictures,
together with the screen shots of a beta of OS4 running on the A1 -
has had a very positive reception. But, please, no private emails for
more details on availability dates and prices - we're swamped with
emails as it is. This stuff will be posted 'when its ready' (c).
Hope this helps
September 12th, 2003 - Antigo, WI - Grasshopper LLC today announced
the addition of a fifth supported platform in the stable of computers
and operating systems that PageStream already runs on. Amiga OS4 PPC
is an exciting new operating system and hardware from Amiga Inc,
Eyetech and Hyperion Entertainment that follows in the footsteps of
the great hardware and software that is the Amiga. "Deron Kazmaier,
PageStream creator, has exceeded our expectations again!"
proclaimed
Grasshopper LLC owner Marna Holt. "Deron has burned the midnight oil
on his old love, the Amiga, creating the foundation for the next
generation of PageStream on the Amiga."
While the full public release
of OS4 is beyond our control, the PageStream is not! As the Amiga OS4
PPC is a natural progression from the older 68k, we are offering a
limited time discount for those who are moving up to the AmigaOS4 PPC
version from PageStream Amiga68k and likewise we are including the
Amiga68k version to those who purchase the PPC version before it is
publicly released. Crossgrade price from PageStream 4.1 Amiga68k to
AmigaPPC is only $40 and the price for a new copy of PageStream4.1
Amiga PPC (with Amiga68k) is only $99. The special offers are set to
expire upon the public release of Amiga OS4, and will then revert to
the same low pricing already in place for the other platforms. Advance
copies of PageStream 4.1 AmigaPPC are available now, but we will
continue to stay in step with improvements to OS4.
{There was a naming conflict to be resolved. Brad}
LANClip 0.3 has been released. LANClip is a small utility that lets
you share one global clipboard between your networked computers.
Also, there is now a Windows client.
New features since 0.2:
* Swap between local and shared clipboard with a hotkey
* New icons from Martin "Mason" Merz
* Updated prefs editor
---
21 -Sep-2003
The first version of NetClip has been released.
NetClip is a small utility that lets you share one global clipboard
between your networked Amigas (or AmigaOS clones). Data copied to the
clipboard on one Amiga is immediately available to paste on other
machines.
Features:
· Transparency. Cut and paste over the network as easily as between
apps on the same computer.
· Serverless and stateless protocol. Once NetClip is set up on your
LAN, you can turn off or on any of your Amigas without it causing
NetClip a problem.
· Pastes ALL kinds of clipboard data. You can write a Personal Paint
brush to the clipboard on one Amiga, and paste it into iconedit on
another.
Download it from the website.
{Again from the excellent amigaworld.net site. (Do you get the
feeling this is a good site to visit? We certainly think so at AU.)
You should be aware that the Amiga trademarks were in no serious
danger of being lost by Amiga as it turned out. Brad}
9-Sep-2003
A dispute arose late May over the status of the AMIGA trademark
That dispute has now been resolved and once again Amiga inc retain
their trademarks
It transpires that back in May 2003 this year, an oversight, led to
Amiga losing their TradeMarks.
Genesi quickly filed for application of Amigas TradeMarks. However
with the Trademarks returning to the original owners, a win of the
rights to the trademarks by anyone else is now unlikely.
Amiga TradeMark Retainment.
