Editor's Thoughts and Introduction:
Lots of product information to bring your way today. A question much
asked has been "is Impulse leaving the Amiga behind". That question
looks to be answered with the announcement carried below concerning
Imagine 5. Good news for Amiga 3D modelers!
The popular Miami networking package gets an update - and the ability
to use Secure Socket Layer standard for protected financial
transactions over the Net. Two detailed press releases are below.
At the same time, a new version of the Voyager browser has been
announced. It also uses SSL. It is our understanding that the Voyager
upgrade was developed in coordination with Miami.
A hardware/software package with the potentially confusing name of
Majordome offers you the ability to control powered devices in your
home from your Amiga. Unfortunately, the announcement we have for you
doesn't say where you can get these products. (We are unaware of any
relationship between Majordome's creators and those who put together
the list server software Majordomo.)
The folks at Haage and Partner have pre-announced four very
interesting products. We have the teaser information on all four.
Another unusual product is software named AHI. It purports to do for
audio on the Amiga what Cybergraphix did for the display. We have the
press release for you.
Those of you who need to test your Amiga's memory or disk functions
may want to check out STU, a shareware diagnostic utility. From the
land of the Magyars comes a very interesting software which can take
your Amiga beyond its limit of four gigabytes per hard drive
partition. I can't conceive of writing enough "Amiga Updates" or
anything else to fill such large partitions, but Amigans working in
graphics will surely welcome this product.
Finally, we have an interesting posting from the Usenet newsgroups.
In issue 970414 we ran an English translation of an interview with
Amiga International's Petro Tyschtschenko. It seems Mr. Tyschtschenko
wishes to make it plain that interview did not contain his official
pronouncements on the Amiga, and he contacted the interview's poster
to make the point.
We should have a much better picture of what Gateway 2000 and Amiga
International have in mind for the future at the World of Amiga show
upcoming in London. A press conference has been scheduled for 3p.m. on
Friday, May 16 during the show. For those of you who'll be attending,
it's will take place in the Salon Bourg, Novotel Exhibition Centre, 1
Shortlands, Hammersmith, London. We'll be bringing our readers
information from the show and press conference just as soon as we have
it.
Enjoy this issue!

M I A M I U P G R A D E D - S S L T O O ! !

Date: Thu, 01 May 1997

Miami 2.1 is now available for download from www.nordicglobal.com.

Major changes since version 2.0n:

- full support for multicasting (level 2) and multicast
routing in the registered version.

- support for MiamiSSL, a new implementation of the "Secure
Socket Layer (SSL)" standard, in the registered version.
MiamiSSL is distributed separately. See the separate
announcement.

- three separate program versions for "68020+ (registered)",
"68000/010 (registered)" and "unregistered" to reduce the
size of the binaries.

- significant performance improvements across Ethernet.

- many internal changes for cleaner, faster code...

Miami 2.1 is the first version of Miami that supports a new keyfile
format (version 2). However you do NOT necessarily NEED the new
keyfiles to use Miami 2.1. It is safe to install Miami 2.1 on top of
your registered Miami 2.0n installation, and continue to use the old
keyfiles. Please see the separate announcement regarding keyfiles.

Please note that Miami 2.1 is an intermediate release, not a major
release. Development on several new features (ANDI, SocksD support,
built-in serial driver etc.) is actually already further ahead than
visible in Miami 2.1, but the release of an intermediate version of
Miami was necessary in order to support MiamiSSL and new keyfiles.

As Miami now ships with three binaries instead of two, and additional
programs for multicasting were added, it is no longer practical to
have all files in a single archive, because that archive would become
rather large.

Instead the Miami distribution is now spread across four files:

- Miami21main.lha

This archive contains all files (utilities, documentation,
libraries etc.) except for the Miami program binaries.
Everyone who upgrades to Miami 2.1 needs this archive.

- Miami21eval.lha

This archive contains only the Miami program binary for
unregistered users.

- Miami21reg000.lha

This archive contains only the 68000/010 version of the Miami
program binary for registered users. This binary REQUIRES a
keyfile ("old" or "new" keyfile).

- Miami21reg020.lha

This archive contains only the 68020+ version of the Miami
program binary for registered users. This binary REQUIRES a
keyfile ("old" or "new" keyfile).

This means everyone upgrading to Miami 2.1 needs the main archive
and one of the other three archives.

NOTE: At the moment only the ftp links on the Miami download page are
functional - for technical reasons. The www links should work within a
few days as well.

*****
Nordic Global Inc. is proud to announce the availability of

MiamiSSL

an implementation of the "Secure Socket Layer" (SSL) standard for
Miami, brought to you by a cooperative effort of Nordic Global Inc.
and VaporWare (the authors of Voyager-NG and several other fine pieces
of Amiga software). MiamiSSL is based on the freely available "SSLeay"
software suite, version 0.6.6, by Eric Young.

SSL is a set of protocols required to create secure (encrypted and
authenticated) TCP connections, and is, among other things, used for
the "https" protocol in web browsers.

"https" is used by many web servers to provide a secure transmission
of sensitive data, such as credit card information for online
ordering. One site that just recently added "https" support is
www.sasg.com, the site of SASG, authors of MUI.

MiamiSSL is available FREE OF CHARGE to ALL registered users of Miami.
To use MiamiSSL you need ALL of the following:

- REGISTERED Miami 2.1 or higher.

- Miami keyfiles in the new keyfile format (see the separate
announcement regarding keyfiles).

- The archive "MiamiSSL10.lha" from www.nordicglobal.com.
This archive does NOT contain cryptographic code, and may
be freely im/exported to/from the USA.

- One of the MiamiSSL encryption libraries. Please see below
for more information on these.

- reqtools.library version 38 or higher. You can get a
current version of reqtools.library from Aminet.

- Software supporting MiamiSSL. At the moment Voyager-NG
supports MiamiSSL in its latest release version (available
from www.vapor.com).

As SSL requires various algorithms for strong encryption, it is a bit
difficult to find legal ways to use and distribute it everywhere. This
is why the MiamiSSL encryption libraries (which contain the encryption
code required for SSL) are kept separate from the MiamiSSL main
archive, and are NOT available from public sources such as Aminet, but
only by other means.

Currently two versions of the MiamiSSL encryption library
exist:

- miamisslusa.library:

For use by US/Canadian citizens living in the USA or Canada.

This library is ONLY available directly from me on
request (fifth step in MiamiRegister), and ONLY to citizens
of USA or Canada. It MAY ONLY be used within the USA and
Canada, and MAY NOT be exported to other countries, or be
made available for export in any way (e.g. by uploading it
to public software sites). If you violate these rules then
you may be subject to criminal prosecution under US/Canadian
federal law.

To my best knowledge miamisslusa.library does NOT contain
any algorithms which are patented in the USA, or covered by
similar software rights, except for RSA, which is implemented
using the RSAref suite, licensed for freeware/shareware use.
This means miamisslusa.library is, to my best knowledge,
legal to use in the USA. However I will not take any
responsibility for the validity of this statement -- use
at your own risk !

One drawback: for legal reasons miamisslusa.library does NOT
implement the algorithms RC2 and RC4, and as a result is NOT
interoperable with servers which ONLY support these
algorithms (e.g. the export versions of many commercial web
servers, such as Netscape's server). miamisslusa.library
can only connect to servers which support DES or IDEA, or
which allow unencrypted SSL connections. It is, for instance,
compatible to SSL-adapted versions of the Apache web server,
and to web servers based on SSLeay or MiamiSSL.

- miamisslintl.library:

For use by anyone who lives outside of the USA and Canada --
will be available very soon.

This library was built outside of the USA (without exporting
encryption material from the USA), and is ONLY available from
sources outside of the USA (soon available from www.vapor.com).
It MAY NOT be UPLOADED to public software sites in the USA, it
MAY NOT be EXPORTED from the USA, and it MAY NOT be USED in
the USA, because it supports RC2 and RC4, algorithms which are
legally protected in the USA.

Note to US/Canadian users:

To make this point perfectly clear:

YOU MAY NOT USE miamisslintl.library IN THE USA OR CANADA !

miamisslintl.library implements algorithms which are covered
by patents and other rights in the USA (and possibly in
Canada), and its use without proper licenses is thus illegal
in these countries, as explained to you here and in the
README file accompanying miamisslintl.library.

I hereby explicitly inform you that I DO NOT have a license to
use RC2/RC4 in the USA or Canada, that miamisslintl.library
was released WITHOUT such a license, and to non-US/Canadian
users only, and that you may therefore NOT use it in the USA
or Canada. If you violate this rule then you may be subject
to criminal prosecution under US/Canadian federal law and/or
civil lawsuits. In any case I WILL NOT be liable or
responsible for your illegal use, or any consequences
arising from it.

Note to international users:

The fact that miamisslintl.library is AVAILABLE to you does
NOT necessarily mean that it is LEGAL to use. It is YOUR
responsibility to check the laws in your country, state or
city, to find out about any restrictions on the use of
cryptographic software or the particular algorithms
implemented in miamisslintl.library (RSA, DES, MD2, MD5,
RC2, RC4, SHA, SHA1) in your area BEFORE using
miamisslintl.library.

In particular, as far as I know the use of strong
cryptography is currently entirely prohibited in France and
Iraq, so people in these countries may probably NOT use
miamisslintl.library at all.

miamisslintl.library DOES implement RC2 and RC4, and therefore
interoperates with all known web servers (including Netscape),
but it does NOT implement IDEA, because of licensing
restrictions in many countries. However so far this has not
turned out to be a problem with any servers.

Summarizing, what you need to do to use MiamiSSL with Voyager-NG
is, step-by-step:

- Ensure that you have reqtools.library V38 or higher installed.
If you don't have it then get the ReqTools archive from Aminet
(util/libs/ReqToolsUsr.lha).

- Download Miami 2.1 from www.nordicglobal.com and install it
"over" your current Miami registration.

- Register Miami, if you have not already done so, and wait
for your keyfile to arrive.

- In the "About" requester of Miami check if your keyfiles are
already "Keyfile version 2" (near the bottom of the requester).
If you still have "Keyfile version 1", then execute the fourth
step in MiamiRegister ("Upgrade keyfile version 1->2") and
wait for my email response.

- Users in the USA/Canada: Execute the fifth step in MiamiRegister
to order your copy of miamisslusa.library. Wait for my email
response, and install the library as described in the email.

- Users outside the USA/Canada: Get miamisslintl.library,
(soon from www.vapor.com), and install the library as
described in the archive.

- Get the MiamiSSL archive from www.nordicglobal.com and
install it using the included Installer script.

- Get Voyager-NG from www.vapor.com and install it.

After that Voyager-NG should automatically use MiamiSSL for
"https:" URLs.

One more comment:

At the moment the distribution of MiamiSSL is mostly targetted towards
web browsers such as Voyager-NG and other clients, and does not
include most of the SSL server tools (to handle certificates, keyfiles
etc.)

However all server functionality IS implemented and tested in
MiamiSSL, and updated installation archives and instructions for
server operation, certificate testing and management etc. will be
released once the first MiamiSSL-aware servers for AmigaOS become
available.

If you are interested in adding MiamiSSL support to your software
please contact me at "kruse@nordicglobal.com". One of the nice
features of MiamiSSL is that it allows software authors to support SSL
in their applications without having to deal with the tedious legal
implications.

A H I V E R S I O N 4

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Linkoping, Sweden (April 22, 1997) - Martin Blom announced today the
availability of the AHI Audio System version 4, the retargetable audio
standard for AmigaOS. With this release AHI has grown from being
mainly a developer tool to a professional and user friendly product no
one owning a sound card can live without.

AHI has quickly become a de facto standard, and has hardware drivers
for the built-in sound hardware (Paula) as well as most of the
available sounds cards for the Amiga and DraCo computers. The system
allows fast mixing of up to 128 virtual sound channels in realtime,
and can also be used for non-realtime rendering in 32 bit quality with
linear interpolation and mixing frequencies up to 96 kHz.

"Commodore or Amiga Technologies should have written a better audio
system years ago, but never did", Martin said. "Since nobody else did
either I decided to give it a try, and I am very satisfied with the
result."

It's not only the author who is excited about AHI:

"AHI is the greatest thing since sliced toast, finally our DraCo is no
longer a mute! When people realize what AHI is about it will be as big
as CybergraphX. It's time we got rid of the 8-bit audio limit! Great
work Martin!" -- Johan Otterstrom, Orebro Videoreklam

"Finally there's a powerful retargetable audio standard for Amiga" --
Thomas Wenzel, A.C.T. (designers of the Prelude soundcard)

Sound card except Paula supported by AHI: Aura, Delfina DSP, Draco
Motion, Prelude, Toccata and Wavetools. AHI is available free of
charge from http://www.lysator.liu.se/~lcs/ahi.html Martin Blom can be
reached via E-mail at lcs@lysator.liu.se.

B I G D I S K - N O M O R E 4 G L I M I T

May 1, 1997

BIGDISK is now released, it is available from the AWSW distributors.

It removes the 4GB limitation of AmigaDOS. Now it is possible to
handle 9GB or larger hardisks with the Amiga or DraCo. It is possible
to create partitions above the 4GB limit - you can format them with
any file system you like (AFS, FFS), and it is compatible with ALL
versions of MovieShop on both the DraCo, and VLM as a MovieShop video
or audio partition. We tested it extensively, so we can bravely
suggest it to users who plan to upgrade their NLE system extensively.

Note:
MovieShop4.2 for the DraCo supports hardisks that are larger than 4GB.
BIGDISK also works with the VLM, and also supports AmigaDOS access to
partitions above 4GB.

Check out our site for further details, or for grabbing the demo
version.

KNOWN ISSUES
************

BIGDISK

Compatibility with cybscsi.device is not yet confirmed. Appearantly it
seems that BIGDISK _IS_ compatible with it, but it is not 100%
confirmed yet. Please contact us first, before buying BIGDISK for
cybscsi.device.

BIGDISK OFFERED FOR ALL AMIGA DEALERS
**************************************

If you sell Amiga computers make sure you bundle BIGDISK with all
hardisks that are larger than 4GB.

Even experienced users may run into problems that result in severe
dataloss when using a hardisk that is larger than 4GB with an Amiga
without BIGDISK.

Further details are available on our site. Click on the 4GB VAMPIRE
image on the homepage.

4 WAYS OF GETTING FULL VERSIONS FREE

Subject: Interview with Petro - IMPORTANT UPDATE
Date: Tue, 22 Apr 1997 15:48:38 +0200

Hello Every1,

As sad as this is, I have to post this message. Yesterday, I got an
e-mail from Petro telling me that the contents of the interview with
him, done by Amiga Magazin and translated to English by me, is not his
official statement and is not approved by him. Therefor I ask everyone
that has posted the translation /anywhere/ (Amiga Web Directory) to
remove it. There will be an official statement on the World of Amiga
show in May.So I'm affraid we'll have to wait for good news even
longer :(

Cheers,

Eelke
