Man-made chemicals and environmental hormones...

By Susan L. Conner, author " Drinking Water Quality - Taking Responsibility" and "Drinking Water Quality Coloring Book". Waterworks Publishing. All rights reserved.

In 1993 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring March 22nd of each year as "World Day for Water". The purpose: to create awareness of water issues around the world. The theme this year is "Water and Health". Although "Water Day", March 22, is technically over for this year, our awareness need not be. Every day our health is challenged by new toxins in our environment.

A decade ago, the American Chemical Society's worldwide abstract service recorded its 10 millionth man-made chemical substance - and the number was still growing at a rate of 50,000 per month. Man-made chemicals. That means chemicals like pesticides, perfumes, solvents, synthetic fabrics, formaldehyde. Where do these chemicals end up? In our environment. If that isn't enough to make you think seriously, consider some of the latest research:

The Fenholloway River, near the Florida Panhandle, has turned up androstenedione, known by weight lifters as "andro" (an over-the-counter anabolic steroid). The "andro" in the river, however, comes from the biotransformation of pollutants, not from a bottle. The river's pollution comes from wastes at nearby pulp and paper mills. This is the first environmental androgen (a pollutant that functions like a male sex hormone) ever discovered in nature, says John A. McLachlan, a toxicologist who pioneered studies on environmental hormones. In humans, andro binds to receptors on cells and triggers the production of testosterone, the body's primary androgen. It is now believed that andro helped give Fenholloway River's female mosquitofish masculine fins. Scientists worry that environmental problems affecting this delicate species of fish may signal threats to others.

Indeed, some aquatic species throughout the world have shown signs of yet another pollution-induced masculinization, known as imposex. Affecting about 100 species of marine snails, this condition creates grossly exaggerated male sex organs in both genders. Females can develop a huge penis that blocks their release of eggs. The result? They die.

Several years ago, only a few cases of environmental hormones were recognized by scientists. They were all estrogens. More recently, substances that masquerade as melatonin, anti-androgens, and thyroid hormones have emerged. "I now suspect", says McLachlan, Center for Bioenvironmental Research Director, "that for every hormone that we know of, we will eventually find things in the environment that mimic or block it". He says that by knowing what environmental hormones can do...ecologists and health researchers can begin to look for subtle harm in populations other than fish, including people. (Science News) Subtle harm...over decades. Now we have those millions of man made chemicals being transformed in the environment into "humanlike" hormones!

World Day for Water is not just a "Day" to think about water. It is a wake up call to rethink our way of life. Perhaps we cannot change the state of our water problems overnight - but neither can we bury our heads in the sand and pretend there is no problem.

Certainly the public needs to be made aware of the problems that exist in our water supply so we can begin to do something about them on the local, state, national and international levels. Meanwhile, we must become aware of the overwhelming cost to our families that this pollution brings. Is there any wonder why we have such a high rate of disease? Why fool around with your health?

When given the facts, there should be no question as to what water is the best to drink for health. When we realize that many of these pollutants end up in our drinking water, there is only one logical choice as to what type of water to choose. Steam distilled water is STILL the standard by which all water quality is measured all over the world.

Does distilled water leach minerals from my body?

Absolutely, not...in fact just the opposite has been found to occur in cellular research studies. It is a mistaken belief that drinking pure distilled water reduces valuable minerals from living human tissues.

There are two types of minerals, organic and inorganic. Human physiology has a biological affinity for organic minerals. Most organic minerals for our body functions come from dietary plant foods. A growing plant converts the inorganic minerals from the soils to a useful organic mineral.

Tap water presents a variety of inorganic minerals which our body has difficulty absorbing. Their presence is suspect in a wide array of degenerative diseases, such as hardening of the arteries, arthritis, kidney stones, gall stones, glaucoma, cataracts, hearing loss, emphysema, diabetes, and obesity. What minerals are available, especially in "hard" tapwater, are poorly absorbed, or rejected by cellular tissue sites, and, if not evacuated, their presence may cause arterial obstruction, and internal damage Even if the human tissue suddenly developed the ability to absorb inorganic minerals from tap water, it would take an enormous amount of tapwater to supply the bare minimal mineral quantities for human life functions. If (for example) the rich inorganic mineral content of the tap water in Reno, Nevada were modified so that it would convert the daily Calcium requirement (RDA) from its inorganic calcium solutes, you would have to drink 7.4 gallons of their tap water!

When inorganic minerals are "removed" from tapwater, by converting it into pure distilled water, the result is a remarkable biological mineral absorption for both health and maximal metabolic activity.
