Achieving Your Dream...
By Matt Lindland
Pure Water Sponsored 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist
It is easy to stay strong when everything is going your way. The true test of character is when you keep at it when everywhere you turn is another obstacle. It's hard to continue when the challenge is to just hang on amid defeat, disappointment and despair far from the cheers adoring crowds---and that's also when you find out who you really are.
Throughout my athletic career and my life I have had to deal with many setbacks, roadblocks, and obstacles. I thank God everyday for those trials and disappointments. I believe that I became tougher each time in my life that I had to deal with a setback or a failure. So, I was prepared for what was to come the summer before the 2000 Olympics.
I had the best season of my career: I Placed top three in every tournament I entered; I won the Olympic Qualifier in Egypt beating a world champion; I won the National Championships; and finally the Pan-Ams beating another former world champion. Things were going great. This was going to be my year. I was right on track for the 2000 summer Games in Sydney. All that was left was to go to Dallas and beat a guy that I had dominated the prior seven times we met.
Then, at the final Olympic trials the officials raised the other guy's hand at the end of the match. The officials mis-scored the most important match of my career at the worst time ever. This wasn't like missing a strike, but like not calling a homerun when the ball was sitting in the bleachers in the middle of center field. Here I am, one of the top wrestlers in the world, and I'm not even going to the games. Did I feel like quitting? You bet I did. Did I feel like quitting when I lost in the state finals or when I lost my senior year in college? Of course I did. In each case, the disappointment was real and the pain debilitating, but I didn't quit and I wasn't going to quit this time. I didn't lose that match at the final Olympic trials. I was cheated. I had to act quickly and chances to win were slim. I had to do everything I could do to get on the Olympic team.
After the match I filed a formal protest, but it was one of the last matches of the day and they were ready to announce the 2000 Olympic team. I knew that when the protest committee went in and reviewed the match there was no way they wouldn't order for the match to be re-wrestled right then. After thirty minutes, they came out and up held the officials decision. They agreed that the match was scored wrong but the outcome stayed because it was the official's judgment and that could not be change. The committee decided right or wrong there would be no changing a judgment of this match. All 30,000 fans booed, and executives and experts disagreed with this judgment , but it didn't matter. I had to take my case to the sport committee: a nine person standing committee made up of people from all different backgrounds; all with some level of competency in the sport of Greco-Roman wrestling. I was sure that when my case was heard that the match would be re-wrestled.
What happened next was hard to deal with. I had to stay strong and keep my eye on the goal. I was told four of the five voting members would be taken off the call and would not hear deliberation or vote. It turned out that this move could have been the best thing that happened. I had expert witnesses lined up to speak but they were told that they could not comment during the conference call.
My case was never even heard. The vote came back the next day 4-1 to not over turn the results of the trials.
Now, I was forced to take my case before an arbitrator. I flew to Chicago and presented my case for an entire day. I flew home and prayed that justice would be served. This was a slim chance to win but what the arbitrator found was not that the match was scored wrong, but that I was not given a fair and excitable hearing.
A re-match was ordered and I had 52 hours to lose 9.5 kilos to weigh in for the match that was to take place the next morning. This was not going to be easy. USA wrestling did everything they could to interfere. I had to do some investigating and find out where the match would be held and get myself there as soon as possible.
I got on the next plane to Colorado Springs and started my weight cut. This was not going to be an easy task. I was in the sauna, and on the bike in the sauna, jump roping, doing what ever it took with little water and no food. I barely made the weight and then had thirteen hours to recover for the match. I started off slow, but got going and won the match decisively 8-0.
Finally, this nightmare was over and I was on the team, or so I thought. USA Wrestling did not follow the court order to put me on the team and went to every means to keep me off. This case finally stopped at the United States supreme court. I was so excited to finally get on the team and be heading to the Olympics. Things were going great. I went through team processing. I made it through training camp. I matched in the opening ceremonies and now it was time to compete. Just two more days to weigh-ins and I find out that my case is going to be heard by a international court.
There were so many times that I thought this case was finally over and then another road block, but I got through this one too.
I had a great Olympics. Although, I ended up with a silver medal I wrestled every match as tough as I could. I had given everything I could give. No one could argue with that. Not my competitor, my family, friends or even my critics. After some time to reflect on the tournament I realize that it is not the victory or the triumph that is important, but the fact that I gave everything I had to get there and I never gave up.
Water Quiz!
What other kinds of water do you get?
- Groundwater: Water contained in underground aquifers that reach the surface through springs, deep wells, or artesian wells.
- Surface Water: Water collected as rain and snow runoff, and groundwater seepage, collected in reservoirs, lakes and rivers.
- Spring Water: Groundwater that rises to the surface through a natural opening.
- Artesian Well: Groundwater that is reached by drilling and then flows to the surface naturally.
- Mineral Water: Bottled water containing not less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids may be labeled as mineral water. Mineral water is distinguished from other types of bottled water by its constant level and relative proportions of mineral and trace elements at the point of emergence form the source. No minerals can be added to this product.
- Sparkling Bottled Water: Water that after treatment and possible replacement with carbon dioxide, contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it had at emergence from the source.
- Deep Well Water: Groundwater that is reached by drilling, and then pumped to the surface.
- Hard Water: Water high in calcium and magnesium.
- Soft Water: Water low in calcium and magnesium. Soft water can occur naturally or be achieved through ion-exchange wherein calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions.
- Water through Reverse Osmosis: A process to reduce mineral content of water by forcing the water through a semi permeable membrane.
- Water through Carbon Filtration: A method of removing organics and chlorine by use of carbon's natural ability to absorb such chemicals.
- Water through Deionization: A method to produce purified water, utilizing the fact that inorganic impurities possess ionic charges, and can be removed from water utilizing that charge.
