Subject: Conceptual Graphs Workshop '89 (Second call for papers)

Dear Colleague,

Last year, the second Annual Conference on conceptual graphs was organised by
Jean Fargues at the IBM Paris Scientific Center.

In 1989, I shall organise the Annual Conference on conceptual graphs at
Deakin University on the 9th and 10th of March, 1989.

I wish to invite you to attend this workshop, and I am looking forward to a
possible contribution you could propose, such as a 30 minutes presentation
with some handouts or an article. If you are interested in attending,
please notify

Professor Brian J. Garner

IJCAI-89 Workshops:
Request for Proposals

The IJCAI-89 Program Committee invites proposals for the Workshop
Program of the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence
(IJCAI-89),to be held in Detroit, Michigan from August 20, 1989 to August 20,
1989.

Gathering in an informal setting, workshop participants will have the
opportunity to meet and discuss issues with a selected focus---providing for
active exchange among researchers and practitioners on topics of mutual
interest. Members from all segments of the AI community are encouraged to
submit workshop proposals for review.

To encourage interaction and a broad exchange of ideas, the workshops
will be kept small---preferably under 35 participants. Attendance should be
limited to active participants only. The format of workshop presentations
will be determined by the organizers proposing the workshop, but ample time
must be allotted for general discussion. Workshops can range in length from
two hours to two days, but most workshops will last a half day or a full day.

Proposals for workshops should be between 1 and 2 pages in length, and
should contain:

1. a brief description of the workshop identifying specific issues that will
be focused on.

2. a discussion of why the workshop would be of interest at this time,

3. the names and addresses of the organizing committee, preferably 3 or 4
people not all at the same organization,

4. a partial list of potential participants, and

5. a proposed schedule for getting the workshop organized and a proposed
workshop agenda.

Workshop proposals should be submitted as soon as possible, but no
later than 1 February 1989. Proposals will be reviewed as they are received
and resources allocated as workshops are approved. Organizers will be notified
of the committee's decision no later than 15 February 1989.

Workshop organizers will be responsible for:

1. producing a Call for Participation in the workshop, which will be mailed to
AAAI members by AAAI,

2. reviewing requests to participate in the workshop, and determining the
workshop participants,

3. scheduling the activities of the workshop, and

4. preparing a review of the workshop, which will be printed in the AI
Magazine.

IJCAI will provide logistical support, will provide a meeting place
for the workshop, and, in conjunction with the organizers, will determine the
date and time of the workshop.

Please submit your workshop proposals, and enquiries concerning
workshops to:

EXPLANATORY COHERENCE

Paul Thagard
Cognitive Science Loboratory

This paper presents a new computational theory of explanatory coherence
that applies both to the acceptance and rejection of scientific
hypotheses and to reasoning in everyday life. The theory
consists of seven principles that establish relations of local
coherence between a hypothesis and other propositions that explain it,
are explained by it, or contradict it. An explanatory hypothesis is
accepted if it coheres better overall than its competitors.
The power of the seven principles is shown by their implementation in a
connectionist program called ECHO, which has been applied to
such important scientific cases as Lavoisier's argument for
oxygen against the phlogiston theory and Darwin's argument for evolution
against creationism, and also to cases of legal reasoning. The
theory of explanatory coherence has implications for artificial
intelligence, psychology, and philosophy.

Subject: Schwartz Associates Neural Net Promotional Advertisement is
bogus

A company named Schwartz Associates of Mountain View, CA,has
been mailing a neural net promotional advertisement that prominently
displays my name on the envelope and every page inside, with statements
that broadly suggest that I am involved in their enterprise. They
suggest that along with the $1495.00 collection of videos and reprints,
the customer is entitled to contact me for a final qualifying
examination. Needless to say, I have nothing to do with them and it
would seem natural to presume that their wares are as shabby as their
disgraceful business practices.
