The mail-order bookstore Capability's Books offers about half a dozen
computer programs that design vegetable and flower gardens and can
be set up to remind you of weekly chores. I don't know of any that
diagnose pest problems. Capability's prices are reasonable, they
offer a discount on large orders, and a letter will get you excellent
personal service. Their address is:
Capability's Books, Box 114, Highway 46, Deer Park, WI 54007

Subject: Proposed robotics list
I previously asked if a robotics mailing list existed, and if not, was
there interest in starting one. I have now received seven replies,
none indicating the existence of such a list, and all interested in
subscribing to one.
I would like to see such a list created. Personally, I would
like to see a moderated list, along the lines of AILIST, in hopes of
keeping the percentage of useful content high enough to keep the
information useful to those doing robotics research. Alternatively,
it could be a USENET newsgroup, perhaps gatewayed to the non-UNIX
machines by appropriate sites. What is the sense of the AILIST community?
Choose one:
- A robotics list is not necessary.
- A moderated list is preferable.
- An unmoderated list is preferable.
Reply to me, (jbn@glacier.stanford.edu) and I will summarize.
John Nagle
[Editor's note -
The current hookup between AIList and usenet has been a great
source of trouble for me, due in part to the fact that the usenet side
is unmoderated while the internet/bitnet side is.
I currently perform the forwarding by hand, with little
opportunity to prune headers and such - to the great consternation of
many members of the usenet community.
I am currently looking for (or considering writing) software to
handle this task, but until some exists I could not recommend another
cross-net list using the same mechanism as AIList. Unless, of course,
you enjoy three-legged races ...

Try sci.logic and sci.math; they're not moderated, so you can just post
news to them directly.

There are several math lists on usenet. Check with usenet folks.
They are not moderated so you will have to find a way to transmit into
uucp. Try spaf@purdue.

Subject: expert systems on PCs
I'm doing research on the usability and feasibility of expert systems on
personal computers such as the Apple Macintosh and the IBM PC.
There are certainly limitations due to memory size and time efficiency. What are
typical problems when developing and/or using a PC based expert system? What do
users (not only developers) think about expert systems on PCs? What domain
solutions are successfully realized on a PC? Are the users satisfied with the
features and efficiency or are such systems 'just expensive toys'?
The main goal of this survey is to get an overview of how useful and successful
expert system implementations on PCs are.
Any contribution and comments are appreciated. I plan to post a summary of the
results on this newsgroup.
Thanks, Parvis.

Subject: tangram, magic squares
A Taiwanese reader, Dragon Y.Y. <3V6B0001%TWNMOE10.BITNET>
writes that he recently was told of a solution to the tangram puzzle in
an AI-related magazine done by someone at the University of Maryland
named Deausch (Deutsch, perhaps?). Unfortunately, he has been unable to
find the actual reference. I conducted a brief computer search that
failed to yield anything. Can any AIList readers provide further
information? Does anyone know of any other related work?

Does anyone know of vendors who manufacture digital answering
machines that can store a telephone message on disk,
perform rudimentary speech recognition, and say mail the message
to the right person. Sounds like a tall order !! If you know of
anything that comes close to this, can you send me electronic mail ?

Subject: translator systems
H E L P !
=========
Dear subscriber,
I am designing a Language Translator which should translate
English Computer Text Books into persian. Indeed, everybody knows
that there are a lot of works on automatic translation of "English-"
texts into many different languages such as german, chineese, arabic,
etc. It means that the "Analysing"-part of such a translator system
is more than n times (naturally in different manners) designed and
implemented.
Now I will be very pleased to become information from any person
interested in automatic translation of English texts
(into any other language). Specially I wish to be informed where and
how can I locate the followings:
1. Available translation systems from LISTSERV@FINHUTC
or any other possibility to access such a system ?
2. A multi-lingua translator system such as EUROTRA ?
3. Fonts for persian or at least arabic characters ?
Your prompt attention would be most appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
Hooshang Mehrjerdian
