Could we please have the full citations for the papers by
Sherman and Peterson on Webster's 7th? I'd like to read them.

Subject: query on almanacs

I would appreciate any information people could give me on the availability
of online almanacs or similar large bodies of broadranging statistical data.
Public domain or cheap would be preferable, of course. Please send replies to
me; if there is sufficient demand I will summarize for the digest.

Oxford Concordance Program

I have just seen the note from Jana Lamont on IRList on 4 July.
[Note: see V2 #31 of 16 July 1986 - Ed]
The Oxford Concordance Program (OCP) is sold under licence from
Oxford University Computing Service. At present there is a one-off
price of 130 pounds sterling including documentation. OCP is
is written in Fortran and is very easy to implement. It is running
at over 230 institutions throughout the world on all major
machine ranges.

Subject: diff marks

[Note: see discussion in issues 24 and 31 - Ed]
I don't know of anything available to locate only "significant"
differences between document files. Presumably, such software would
have to be table driven so that the user could control what the program
treats as significant and what it ignores.

The only programs that I know of are designed to treat all differences
as significant. You might be able to "relax" these somewhat, however,
by translating your files into SOUNDEX first--that at least would
collapse most of the trivial spelling differences.

You might also consider contacting Polytron Corporation. They have a
version control system with a builtin comparator that appears to be very
sophisticated. Their program is a little expensive (ca. $350), so I am
not optimistic about their cooperating with you on a special project.
It might be worth a phone call, however.

"Significant" troubles me. Sounds as though you need a parser; perhaps
a semantic interpreter as well. If you can settle for something like
"at least five words in sequence have been changed," then the problem
should be quite manageable. There are several good DIFF/COMPARE
programs floating around for PCs, and I bet the authors would be happy
to consult, sell source code, etc.

2) Seven Valleys Software
I have the source (in C) for their Compare and Update programs.
It includes 'ignore case', 'ignore white space between words',
'resync on n lines'. If you have a programmer, this might be a
good start. Let me know if you want me to send this. An ARC
file would be most convenient, but I can send it as ASCII as well.

system. I don't have the source for this, but Dunford seems to be a
good programmer and might be interested in discussing possibilities.

It sounds as though you must have an interesting application in mind, but
it is hard to tell just what you need. In any case, I would like to hear
more about it. --Jim

Subject: Job

The Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, is
looking for a faculty member to strengthen A.I. in the
Laboratory. No very detailed specification is put upon
candidates. We are looking for someone with a fairly
down-to-earth approach who nevertheless has a proper
grasp of theory, who will extend or complement the present
range of interests. People in the Lab active in the area
include Boguraev, Clocksin, Gordon, Sparck-Jones, and
Pulman. The Lab is also active in functional programming,
logic, and verification.

Send a c.v., list of publications, and the names of not
more than three referees to: Secretary of the Appointments
Committee, Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge,
Corn Exchange Street, Cambridge CB2 3QG, U.K. as soon as
possible.

Subject: NRC Announcement for Associates Program

The National Research Council (NRC) and the Army Research Institute
(ARI) are entering an agreement to provide recent graduates and
established scientists an opportunity to compete for research
associate awards. The Associateship Program with ARI will focus on
Intelligent Training Systems (ITS) research. Ideally the candidate
would be interested in research on semantic memory, knowledge
representation, qualitative modelling, student modelling,
causal reasoning, or any of the other important research topics
connected with ITS. There are two levels of competition: recent
Ph.D.s (5 yrs and under ) and senior scientists (more than 5 yrs).
Associates are expected to work some time at ARI. Tenure is for one
to two years. Stipend varies from about $25,000 on up, to be
negotiated. Official applications are to the NRC, but for more
information, contact:

two co-editors of ACM SIGIR Forum; I am the other. Please note
comments in the next msg about the SIGIR Conference for 1986.
Further details will be given in next issue of IRList. We
also hope that Don Kraft <kraft@lsu.csnet> will send an electronic

Subject: FROM THE EDITOR - taken from next issue of SIGIR Forum

The purpose of this note is two fold: first, I want to highlight
some of the contents of this issue; secondly, I want to mention
a few items of general interest that are not included elsewhere
in the Forum.

Starting on Page 2, there is the preliminary program of the 9th
Annual International ACM-SIGIR Conference to be held in Pisa,
Italy this Fall. Also included is the registration information.
SIGIR members will NOT receive a separate mailing of this
information. On pages 7 through 17, the first installment of
summaries of papers given at the Workshop on Foundations of
Adaptive Information processing are included. The workshop was
sponsored by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research and the
Computer Science Department of the University of Regina, and was
held in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada on June 10-11, 1985. The
workshop followed the ACM/SIGIR annual international conference
on research and development in information retrieval, held in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada during the previous week. The remaining
summaries will appear in future issues of the Forum. Another
interesting item in this issue is the report by M. Lesk on the
workshop held last November at the Waterloo's Center for the New
OED. As is usually the case, abstracts of articles recently
published in journals in the area are also included. The program
highlights for ASIS annual conference (pp. 46-48) mentions the
special sessions I have put together on behalf of SIGIR.

Now for a few items of general interest:

- The IR-list Digest, an electronic medium for communication
between reseachers/practitioners in the field is alive and
well. Ed Fox (address in back of front cover) is the co-
ordinator of the IR-list Digest;

- While there are enough items being submitted to make up
issues of Forum, I always wonder how well received and
interesting this publication is. I would like to see at least
one or two technical papers in each issue. I need your help
in this regard. I would also like to receive feedback and
criticisms, which may help make the Forum attractive to most
subscribers;

- For the year 1986-87, I have accepted a faculty position at
the University of Southwestern Louisiana. Anyone wishing to
correspond with me should use the address shown on the back
of the front cover.
